For over a week I stewed, and Devon let me. Every day I got up, went to work, avoided Maxine’s penetrating stare, came home, and locked myself in Devon’s spare bedroom. He would cajole me into joining him for dinner each night, but afterward I would beg off and shut myself back into my temporary bedroom. The paper of Justin’s letter was becoming worn from me fingering it over and over again. I knew I should try to preserve it, but that was more effort that I didn’t have in me.
