Echoes of the Past
The soft golden rays of the morning sun filtered through the window, gently falling across the face of a fair, beautiful young girl sleeping peacefully on her bed.
As the warmth of the sunlight brushed against her skin, she squeezed her eyes shut and pulled the blanket over her face, hoping to steal a few more moments of sleep.
Just then, a warm, affectionate voice echoed through the room.
"Muskaan, dear... Wake up now. The children's dance program is today."
Hearing her grandmother's last words, Muskaan's eyes flew open. She sat upright on the bed in an instant.
The next moment, she lightly tapped her forehead, silently scolding herself for oversleeping. Without wasting another second, she jumped out of bed and hurried toward the bathroom to get ready.
Seeing Muskaan rushing around in such a hurry, her grandmother, Poonam, walked into the room with a gentle smile. The affection in her eyes was impossible to miss as she watched her granddaughter.
"Oh, Muskaan, dear... Slow down! You'll fall. Be careful," she said lovingly.
Just as Muskaan wrapped her hand around the bathroom doorknob, her grandmother's voice reached her ears. She paused for a brief moment, turned around, and flashed her a soft smile. Seeing that smile, Poonam couldn't help but smile back with relief.
Without wasting another second, Muskaan hurried into the bathroom. She quickly brushed her teeth, took a shower, and got ready. A few minutes later, dressed neatly, she stepped out of her room.
She walked straight to the small dining table, pulled the plate closer, picked up a spoon, and began tapping it against the plate like an impatient little child.
Clink... Clink... Clink...
The cheerful sound of the spoon striking the plate echoed throughout the house. It was obvious from her adorable antics that she was starving and eagerly waiting for her breakfast.
Hearing the sound of the spoon repeatedly hitting the plate, Poonam walked out of the kitchen with a smile. Shaking her head at Muskaan's childish behavior, she gently tapped her on the head.
"Oh, you little troublemaker... When will you ever outgrow these childish habits, dear?" she asked affectionately.
Still seated in her chair, Muskaan immediately wrapped her arms around her grandmother's waist. A sweet, innocent smile spread across her face, making Poonam's heart melt.
Poonam's eyes softened with love. She gently stroked Muskaan's head and smiled.
"Yes, yes... I know. My little girl is never going to grow up."
Then, patting her cheek lightly, she added,
"Now hurry up and finish your breakfast, or you'll be late for the dance program."
Smiling brightly, Muskaan let go of her grandmother and quietly began eating her breakfast.
Just then, Poonam noticed Muskaan's still-damp hair. She picked up a towel from nearby, walked behind her granddaughter, and began gently drying her wet hair.
Muskaan simply sat there, enjoying her grandmother's loving care, while Poonam carefully dried every strand of her hair with the same warmth and affection she had always showered upon her.
A few minutes later, Muskaan finished her breakfast. She quickly got up from her chair and hurried back to her room. Within moments, she came out dressed in a simple white salwar suit.
The moment she stepped outside, she walked straight to her grandmother and wrapped her arms around her in a warm hug. Smiling lovingly, Poonam hugged her back tightly and gently stroked her head.
After a few seconds, Muskaan pulled away, flashed her grandmother a bright smile, waved goodbye, and walked out of the house.
The moment she stepped into the lane, the neighborhood children came running toward her and surrounded her from all sides.
The smile on Muskaan's face grew even brighter. Slinging her bag forward, she opened it and took out a handful of chocolates before offering them to the children.
The children happily accepted the chocolates. Then, with excited smiles, they gestured for Muskaan to bend down. Chuckling softly, she leaned toward them.
The very next moment, each child planted a kiss on her cheeks before waving enthusiastically.
"Bye, Didi!"
Laughing cheerfully, they ran off in different directions.
Watching them leave, Muskaan's smile widened.
Just then, a few women from the neighborhood noticed her and looked at her with eyes full of affection.
Muskaan walked over to them and greeted them respectfully with folded hands.
The women lovingly cupped her cheeks and blessed her.
"Always keep smiling like this, dear. May God bless you with endless happiness."
One elderly woman gently placed a black dot behind Muskaan's ear to ward off the evil eye and said with a warm smile,
"May no evil eye ever fall upon my precious girl."
Receiving everyone's blessings with a grateful smile, Muskaan walked over to the waiting auto-rickshaw. She waved at them one last time before getting in, and moments later, the auto drove away.
Whenever Muskaan stepped into an auto-rickshaw or a car, an unexplainable fear gripped her heart. On the outside, she wore the same gentle smile as always, but deep inside, every journey pulled her back to the painful memories she had tried so hard to bury.
Even after all these years, she had never been able to forget that tragic day.
Muskaan was only seven years old when she was traveling with her parents in their car. The journey had been filled with laughter until, without warning, a speeding car coming from the opposite direction crashed violently into theirs.
Bang!
The impact was so devastating that their car was completely wrecked.
Her parents died on the spot.
Muskaan, who had been sitting in the back seat, survived only because of where she was seated. However, she suffered severe injuries, and that single accident changed her life forever.
The people nearby immediately rushed all three of them to the hospital. After examining them, the doctors declared Muskaan's parents dead.
After hours of treatment, Muskaan's life was saved, but the trauma of the horrific accident stole something precious from her forever—her voice.
When Poonam learned about the condition of her beloved granddaughter, it felt like another crushing blow. Losing her son and daughter-in-law was heartbreaking enough, but seeing her innocent granddaughter in such a condition shattered the little strength she had left.
Twelve years had passed since that dreadful accident.
Time had taught them how to live with the pain, but it had never erased the memories. Even today, whenever Muskaan sat inside a car or an auto-rickshaw, the terrifying images of that day resurfaced in her mind, making her heart tremble with fear all over again.
A few moments later, the auto-rickshaw came to a gentle stop. The sudden halt pulled Muskaan out of her thoughts, bringing her back from the painful memories of her past.
With a faint smile, she stepped out of the auto, opened her bag, took out the fare, and held it out to the driver, Ramesh.
Instead of accepting the money, Ramesh smiled and shook his head.
"Oh, what are you doing, dear? How many times have I told you not to pay me? You're just like my own daughter."
Muskaan simply smiled at him. The next moment, she gently took his hand and slipped the money into his palm.
Letting out a helpless sigh, Ramesh smiled and tucked the money into his pocket.
"You're so stubborn, dear. You never listen."
Muskaan's smile widened. She waved goodbye to him before stepping back.
Still smiling, Ramesh turned his auto-rickshaw around and drove away.
As the auto disappeared from sight, Muskaan looked up at the dance club standing before her. Excitement instantly lit up her face. The very next moment, she made her way toward the entrance, swaying lightly with cheerful steps, like a free bird embracing the open sky.
The moment Muskaan stepped inside the dance club, Priya shot her a cold glare. It was obvious from her expression that she was upset with her.
The instant Muskaan noticed Priya's look, the smile on her face faltered for a second. She immediately held both her ears with her hands and looked at Priya with innocent, pleading eyes. A sweet smile curved her lips, silently asking for forgiveness.
It was this very innocence and childlike charm that made everyone adore her. No matter how angry someone was, one look at her adorable face was enough to melt their heart.
And Priya was no exception.
Smiling helplessly, she walked over to Muskaan, gently lowered her hands from her ears, and pulled her into a warm hug.
"You, honestly... You know today's the children's dance competition, don't you?"
Muskaan nodded innocently, admitting her mistake.
Just then, all the little children came running toward her and surrounded her from every side.
One little boy excitedly jumped forward and said,
"Muskaan Ma'am, please tell her that I'm going to win the competition today!"
Before he could finish, a little girl quickly stepped in, placed both hands on her waist, and replied confidently,
"Oh, please! Muskaan Ma'am, tell him that I'm the one who's going to win the competition!"
Hearing them, the rest of the children also started claiming that they would be the winner. Within moments, the entire hall was filled with their innocent arguments and cheerful laughter, while Muskaan simply stood there, smiling warmly at all of them.
Just then, Muskaan looked at all the children, and a gentle smile spread across her face. Using sign language, she explained,
"You are all one team. It doesn't matter who wins. Whoever wins, the victory will belong to this dance club... and if the dance club wins, then all of you win together."
The moment the children understood her, their faces lit up with bright smiles. They immediately ran toward her and wrapped their little arms around her waist.
Smiling warmly, Muskaan lovingly patted each of them on the head.
A while later, the children returned to their practice. Standing quietly in a corner, Muskaan watched them dance. Seeing the excitement on their faces and the passion in their movements, she slowly drifted into her own thoughts.
Becoming a dancer had always been her biggest dream.
But fate had been cruel to her. Because of one shortcoming, people never looked at her talent. Instead, they mocked her and rejected her wherever she went. Even after trying until the very end, all she received was rejection, humiliation, and disappointment.
During the darkest phase of her life, her best friend, Priya, became the ray of hope she desperately needed.
It was Priya who suggested that Muskaan open her own dance academy.
However, Muskaan didn't have enough money to make that dream come true.
Without hesitating for even a moment, Priya arranged the money for her. Together, the two friends started the dance academy, and from that day onward, they worked side by side to build it into what it was today.
Just then, Priya noticed that Muskaan had once again lost herself in her thoughts. Smiling, she walked over and snapped her fingers in front of Muskaan's eyes.
The sound brought Muskaan back to reality. Looking at Priya, she immediately wrapped her in a warm hug.
Priya smiled and gently stroked Muskaan's hair with affection.
A few moments later, Muskaan stepped back and explained through sign language,
"I need to pick up Grandma's medicine. Please take care of everything here until I get back."
Priya nodded with a smile.
Muskaan waved goodbye to all the children before leaving the dance academy.
After walking for a while, she arrived at the nearby medical store.
As always, she greeted the shop owner with a warm smile, took the prescription out of her bag, and handed it to Vijay.
After looking at the prescription, Vijay began gathering the medicines. While packing them, he smiled and asked,
"How are you, dear?"
Smiling, Muskaan replied through sign language,
"I'm doing well. How are you?"
By now, Vijay had learned to understand Muskaan's signs perfectly.
"I'm doing well too, dear," he replied with a smile.
After collecting the medicines, Muskaan thanked him with a grateful smile and walked out of the store.
She had barely walked a short distance when a white luxury car came speeding toward her.
The moment her eyes fell on it, her footsteps came to an abrupt halt.
The color drained from her face. Her breathing became uneven as the horrifying memories of the accident from twelve years ago flashed before her eyes.
Her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
The packet of medicines slipped from her fingers and fell to the ground.
Frozen in fear, Muskaan tightly shut her eyes with both her hands, as though trying to escape the terrifying memories that had returned to haunt her once again.
