Chapter 1: Haunting Past of Fenal
The sun had dropped low over the horizon, casting its warm golden rays on the looming ancients that made up the thick forest surrounding the small village of Eldergrove. Fenal picked her way warily through the underbrush, her heart pounding in her chest. She had gone further from the village than she had ever been before, and some compulsion stronger than curiosity had driven her. Above, the moon—a sliver of silver—glimmered fitfully through the swirling clouds, lighting her way just enough to show her the twisted roots and stones that waited to trip her. “Fenal, you shouldn’t be out here alone,” a voice called softly from behind her. She turned to find Raven, her best friend, stepping out of the trees. Raven was a tall woman with long, dark hair flowing like a river down her back. Her eyes always seemed alive with mischief as she c****d her head and looked into Fenal’s face with a concerned look. “I’m fine, Raven,” Fenal replied shakily, though her voice trembled slightly. “I needed some air.” Raven edged just a bit closer, worry lining her brow. “Air? Or a chance to get away from what the whispers say? You know they talk about you. Don’t you?” Fenal looked down, her heart a heavy stone. She knew. The villagers whispered about her; the hushed tones were feathered with fear and pity alike. “The Alpha’s Rejected Mate,” they called her—a label that clung to her like a second skin. She has been the target of ridicule ever since Alexander, the powerful Alpha, turned his back on her. “Let them,” Fenal said, trying to sound braver than she felt. “It doesn’t matter.” Raven reached out, her hand gently touching Fenal’s shoulder. “Yes, it does matter. You matter. You can’t keep running away from the truth.” Her friend’s words were like a dagger into her very heart. The truth was a burden she didn’t want to bear. “What truth?” she whispered, barely audible. “Truth about your past,” Raven said, her tone now so serious. “You cannot always run away from it, Fenal. We need to face it together.” Another wave of frustration washed over her. “I don’t want to face it! I want to forget.” “Forget what?” pressed Raven, her eyes so intense. “The day you lost your family? The day you were left all alone?” Fenal shuddered at the memory, a flood of pain rushing to reacquaint itself with her. It was a memory buried deep within her heart, one which spoke to her in the dark hours of the night. Her parents, once so vibrant and full of life, had been cruelly taken from her by a rival pack. “I can’t, Raven,” Fenal sobbed, her voice breaking. “When I close my eyes, I see them. I see their faces…their blood.” Raven stepped closer, her gaze softening. “You have to allow yourself to grieve, to remember. They wouldn’t want you to live in the shadows, Fenal. They would want you to be strong.” “I’m not strong,” she whispered, head shaking. Frost burned the edges of her eyes with tears. “I was weak. I couldn’t save them.” “You were just a kid back then,” Raven reminded her softly. “You did the best you could. Now you’re an adult, and it’s time to take back your life.” A little spark of determination was struck within Fenal as she gazed into the other woman’s eyes. That was a fire that lit inside her. “Reclaim my life,” she whispered, her tongue tasting the words as though they were somehow foreign to her. “Yes,” Raven encouraged, her voice rising with enthusiasm. “You get a chance at new beginnings. You get to confront Alexander, to show him you’re not just a self-pitying mate who’s been cast off. The mention of Alexander sent a shiver down Fenal’s spine. For the Alpha was a man whose very presence inspired respect and fear in equal measure. She remembered glancing at her; there seemed to be a mixture of disdain and pity in those cold blue eyes. She had amounted to nothing for him, an afterthought in his mighty world. “Why would he want to see me?” Fenal asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “He rejected me.” “Because you’re more than that,” Raven said. “You deserve the chance to stand before him and prove that you are worthy of respect.” Fenal closed her eyes as her fear battled against the flicker of her hope. “What if he still sees me as weak?” “Then show him that you are not,” Raven replied firmly. “You have power within you, Fenal. You just need to unlock it.” Feeling the swell of courage rise through her body, Fenal took a deep breath. “Okay. I’ll confront him.” Raven smiled. Her expression lightened. “That’s the spirit! Together, we can face anything.” They were turning around to head to the village now, and something in Fenal lit a spark of determination in her chest. Maybe it was time to stop running from her past and start embracing her future. The moon hung high, its full rays causing an ethereal light to carry across Eldergrove as the two approached the den. Tension was high; Fenal’s heart raced faster with every step closer she got to the towering structure that loomed over the forest. “Ready?” asked Raven, the snow leopard, a furrow between her brows. Fenal nodded, her insides churning. “As ready as I’ll ever be. They stepped into the den, and Fenal’s breath caught at the sight before her. The room was vast and imposing, filled with the scent of leather and wood. At the far end, Alexander sat on his throne, a regal figure cloaked in dark furs. His presence was electrifying, and Fenal felt a wave of heat rush through her. “Fenal,” he said, low and commanding. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to look into his eyes. “Alpha Alexander.” Raven squeezed her hand reassuringly, but the tension in the room was palpable. “What do you want?” he asked in a tone filled with a combination of curiosity and irritation. “I—” Fenal hesitated, the weight of her emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “I want to talk.” “About what?” It was as if he peeled her open, putting her in the spotlight again, and Fenal fought to find her voice. “About my past. About…about us.” Alexander didn’t even try to hide his interest, leaning a bit forward. “Us? There is no ‘us,’ Fenal. You were rejected. The pain in his words cut deeper than she had anticipated. “I know that,” she replied, her voice shaking. “But I need you to understand … I’m not weak. I’m not just a rejected mate.” He raised an eyebrow, skepticism etched on his handsome features. “Is that so?” “Yes! I have been living in fear of my past, of your rejection, but I will not be defined by it anymore.” For a moment, silence enveloped the room, and Fenal could feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating. Alexander stared at her, his expression unreadable. “Prove it,” he finally said, voice issuing a challenge. Fenal’s heart raced at his words. “How?” “Show me your strength. Show me you can remain standing without the label of being a rejected mate.” “I will,” she said, her spirit reignited. “And I will show you that I am more than what you think.” “Then do it,” he said, his voice steady. “But let this be known: if you fail, then you will further support the belief that you are indeed weak.” Fenal’s stomach twisted at his challenge, but she straightened her shoulders, determination flooding her veins. “I won’t fail.” With that, Alexander stood, his commanding presence overwhelming. “Then come find me when you’ve proven your worth. Until then, you are nothing to me.” Fenal felt her heart shatter at his dismissal, but she held her ground, refusing to let him see her crumble. “I’ll prove you wrong.” As she turned to leave, Alexander’s voice stopped her in her tracks. “And Fenal?” “Yes?” “Don’t think this will be easy. The path ahead is fraught with danger.” “I’m ready for it.” She replied, her voice steady despite the quiver in her heart. With that and her parting words, Fenal dashed into the night with her mind racing. The gauntlet had been thrown, and she could anticipate the rough road ahead. Yet, as she walked by Raven, she allowed the flicker of hope to rise within her. “Are you okay?” Raven asked, concern evident in her eyes. “I will be. This is just the beginning,” Fenal said, her response filled with determination as she stiffened her posture. As they made their way back through the forest, darkness flickered around them, murmuring secrets of the past and the trials to come. Fenal’s heart raced with anticipation, yet somehow she had a sense that she was standing on the threshold of a transformation that would change everything. But, as the dark deepened into blackness, an eerie howl echoed through the trees and made her blood run cold. “Did you hear that?” Raven asked, low. Fenal nodded, instincts rising within. “We’ll have to tread carefully. The scent here might be from a rival pack.”
