THE SHADOW KING FORTRESS
The Shadow King's Fortress
"The deepest wounds are not the ones that bleed... but the ones left behind after someone walks away."
Pain.
It was the first thing Lyra Blackwood felt.
Not the sharp pain of a broken bone or the sting of a fresh wound, but a deep, crushing ache that wrapped itself around her heart like invisible chains. Every breath reminded her of the moment Alpha Kael had rejected her before the entire Silverfang Pack.
His words echoed through her mind.
"I, Alpha Kael Silverfang, reject you as my mate and future Luna."
She wanted to forget them.
She couldn't.
Her eyelids fluttered open, and for a moment she simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above her. Dark wooden beams stretched across it, carved with strange silver symbols that shimmered in the firelight.
She frowned.
This wasn't the forest.
The last thing she remembered was collapsing beneath the ancient trees after being thrown out of her own pack. She remembered cold rain, the smell of damp earth... and glowing crimson eyes watching her from the darkness.
Had she survived?
Slowly, she pushed herself upright.
A sharp pain shot through her ribs.
She gasped, clutching her side.
"Don't move too quickly."
The deep voice froze her in place.
Her eyes darted toward the large window overlooking a sea of mist-covered mountains.
A man stood there with his back to her.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in black.
The morning sunlight outlined his figure like a shadow carved from stone.
When he turned, Lyra's breath caught.
It was him.
The mysterious king from the forest.
His crimson eyes held none of the cruelty she had expected. Instead, they studied her quietly, as though he was making sure she was truly awake.
"You..." she whispered.
He inclined his head.
"You remember me."
"I remember thinking I was about to die."
"You almost did."
His answer was calm, almost matter-of-fact.
He crossed the room with slow, confident steps and stopped a respectful distance away. Up close, Lyra noticed details she had missed before.
A faint scar traced the side of his face.
His black hair was tied loosely behind his neck.
And despite the strength in his build, there was something weary in his eyes... as if he carried burdens no one else could see.
"I am Ronan Draven," he said. "King of the Shadow Realm."
The title sent a chill through her.
Every werewolf pup knew the stories.
The Shadow King.
The ruler no Alpha dared challenge.
The monster said to command wolves with crimson eyes and disappear into the darkness without leaving footprints.
Yet nothing about the man before her matched those terrifying tales.
"Where am I?" she asked cautiously.
"My fortress."
She looked around.
The room was grand without being extravagant. Black stone walls were softened by silver tapestries embroidered with moons and wolves. Shelves lined with ancient books filled one corner, while a fire crackled warmly in the hearth.
This didn't look like the home of a monster.
It looked... lived in.
"You treated my wounds?"
"I did."
"Why?"
For the first time, Ronan hesitated.
"Because leaving you to die was never an option."
His answer only confused her more.
"You don't even know me."
His gaze lingered on her for a heartbeat before he replied.
"I know enough."
Before she could ask what he meant, someone knocked on the heavy wooden door.
A young maid entered carrying a tray.
Fresh bread.
Steaming soup.
Herbal tea.
The girl bowed respectfully.
"My King."
Ronan nodded.
"Leave it here."
The maid obeyed, but before leaving she smiled warmly at Lyra.
"We're glad you're awake, my lady."
My lady?
Lyra blinked in surprise.
The girl disappeared, quietly closing the door.
"You told them who I am?" Lyra asked.
"No."
"Then why did she call me that?"
Ronan picked up the tray and placed it on the table beside her bed.
"They call every guest of mine with respect."
Guest.
Not prisoner.
The word caught her off guard.
"You... aren't keeping me here?"
"If you wish to leave after you've recovered, no one will stop you."
She searched his face for any sign of deception.
There was none.
He meant it.
For the first time since her rejection, someone had offered her a choice.
A tear slipped down her cheek before she could stop it.
Embarrassed, she quickly wiped it away.
"I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
His voice was unexpectedly gentle.
"I've never seen anyone survive a broken mate bond without shedding tears."
Lyra laughed bitterly.
"It feels like half of my soul was ripped away."
Ronan didn't argue.
Because he knew it was true.
Silence settled between them.
Outside, the wind whispered against the fortress walls.
Finally, Lyra looked at him.
"Why did you kneel to me?"
His crimson eyes met hers.
The room seemed to grow quieter.
"I've waited many years for someone."
"Who?"
"You."
Her heart skipped.
"That doesn't make any sense."
"It will."
"When?"
"When you're ready to hear the truth."
Before she could demand answers, the fortress suddenly trembled.
A loud horn echoed through the mountains.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Ronan's expression hardened instantly.
The warmth in his eyes disappeared, replaced by the cold authority of a king.
The chamber doors burst open.
A warrior dressed in black armor hurried inside and dropped to one knee.
"My King!"
"What is it?"
"The Silverfang Pack has crossed the eastern border."
Lyra's blood ran cold.
The warrior swallowed.
"Their Alpha refuses to leave."
Ronan's voice became dangerously quiet.
"What does Kael Silverfang want?"
The warrior hesitated.
Then answered the words that made the entire room fall silent.
"He says..."
"...he has come to reclaim his mate."
End of Chapter One
"Sometimes the greatest mistake a person makes... is realizing the value of what they threw away only after someone else begins to treasure it.”
