# The Letter ## A Short Drama Script **CHARACTERS:** - **MARIA SANTOS** (45) - A hardworking mother, tired but determined - **ELENA SANTOS** (22) - Maria's daughter, recent college graduate - **CARLOS SANTOS** (50) - Maria's husband, construction worker - **ABUELA ROSA** (70) - Maria's mother, wise but frail **SETTING:** The Santos family kitchen in their modest home. Evening light filters through worn curtains. A small dining table sits center stage with mismatched chairs around it. --- ## ACT I **SCENE 1** *(Lights up. MARIA stands at the stove, stirring a pot. ELENA enters, looking at her phone.)* **ELENA**: Mom, you didn't have to cook. I could have picked something up. **MARIA**: *(without turning around)* When you live under my roof, you eat my food. Besides, your father will be home soon. *(ELENA sits at the table, still on her phone)* **ELENA**: About that... I got the job in San Francisco. *(MARIA stops stirring, her back still to ELENA)* **MARIA**: The one you interviewed for last month? **ELENA**: Yeah. They want me to start in two weeks. *(Long pause. MARIA slowly turns around)* **MARIA**: Two weeks? Elena, that's... that's across the country. **ELENA**: It's a great opportunity, Mom. Marketing coordinator at a tech startup. The salary is— **MARIA**: I don't care about the salary! What about your family? What about Abuela Rosa? She's been asking for you every day since you graduated. **ELENA**: *(standing up)* This is exactly why I didn't want to tell you right away. I knew you'd make it about everyone else. **MARIA**: Make it about everyone else? Elena, we sacrificed everything so you could go to college. Your father worked double shifts, I cleaned houses until my hands bled— **ELENA**: And I'm grateful! But I can't stay here forever just because you sacrificed for me. That's not how this works. *(CARLOS enters, work clothes dirty, lunch box in hand)* **CARLOS**: What's all the shouting about? **MARIA**: Your daughter is abandoning us. **ELENA**: I'm not abandoning anyone! I'm starting my career. **CARLOS**: *(setting down his lunch box)* Slow down. What's going on? **ELENA**: I got a job offer in San Francisco. It's everything I studied for, Papa. *(CARLOS looks between MARIA and ELENA)* **CARLOS**: That's... that's wonderful, mija. When do you start? **MARIA**: *(incredulous)* Carlos! **CARLOS**: What? She worked hard for this. **MARIA**: So we just let her go? After everything we've been through as a family? *(ABUELA ROSA shuffles in slowly, using a walker)* **ABUELA ROSA**: Why is everyone yelling? I could hear you from my room. **ELENA**: *(gently)* Nothing, Abuela. Just... talking about work. **ABUELA ROSA**: *(sitting down with difficulty)* Work is important. But family... family is everything. *(The room falls silent)* --- ## SCENE 2 *(Later that evening. ELENA sits alone at the table with her laptop. ABUELA ROSA enters slowly)* **ABUELA ROSA**: You're leaving us, aren't you? **ELENA**: *(closing laptop)* Abuela, it's not that simple. **ABUELA ROSA**: *(sitting down)* When I was your age, I left everything I knew. My parents, my sisters, my whole world... to come here with your grandfather. **ELENA**: That was different. You were starting a family. **ABUELA ROSA**: No, mija. I was chasing a dream. Just like you. *(ABUELA ROSA reaches into her sweater pocket and pulls out an old, yellowed envelope)* **ABUELA ROSA**: I never told anyone about this. Not even your mother. **ELENA**: What is it? **ABUELA ROSA**: A letter. From my sister in Mexico. She wrote it five years after I came here. She was sick... dying. She begged me to come home, to see her one last time. **ELENA**: Did you go? **ABUELA ROSA**: *(shaking her head)* No. Your grandfather said we couldn't afford it. Your mother was just a baby, and we had nothing. I told myself there would be other chances. **ELENA**: Abuela... **ABUELA ROSA**: She died two months later. I never saw her again. Never got to say goodbye. *(ELENA reaches across the table and takes ABUELA ROSA's hand)* **ABUELA ROSA**: *(continuing)* I kept this letter all these years to remind myself... sometimes the chances we don't take hurt more than the ones we do. **ELENA**: But what about family? What about staying together? **ABUELA ROSA**: Real family, mija... real family wants what's best for you, even when it breaks their heart. *(MARIA appears in the doorway, having overheard)* **MARIA**: Mama? You never told me about your sister. **ABUELA ROSA**: *(looking up)* Some pain... some pain we carry alone. --- ## SCENE 3 *(The next morning. CARLOS sits at the table with coffee. MARIA enters, her eyes red from crying)* **CARLOS**: You didn't sleep. **MARIA**: How could I? She's really going, Carlos. **CARLOS**: Maybe that's not such a bad thing. **MARIA**: *(sitting down)* How can you say that? **CARLOS**: Because I remember being her age. I remember wanting to see the world, to be more than what this neighborhood could offer. **MARIA**: But you stayed. **CARLOS**: I stayed because I fell in love with you. But Maria... I also stayed because I was scared. And sometimes I wonder... what if I hadn't been? **MARIA**: You regret marrying me? **CARLOS**: *(reaching for her hand)* Never. Not for one second. But I don't want Elena to look back in twenty years and wonder "what if." *(ELENA enters, dressed professionally, carrying a suitcase)* **ELENA**: I called them back. I'm taking the job. *(MARIA starts to cry)* **ELENA**: *(kneeling beside her mother)* Mom, please don't cry. This isn't goodbye forever. **MARIA**: It feels like it. **ELENA**: I promise you, I will call every week. I'll visit for holidays. And when I get settled, maybe... maybe you and Papa can come visit me. **CARLOS**: In San Francisco? *(smiling slightly)* I've never seen the ocean. **ELENA**: Really? **CARLOS**: Really. *(ABUELA ROSA enters)* **ABUELA ROSA**: Are you leaving today? **ELENA**: My flight is this afternoon. *(ABUELA ROSA hands her the old letter)* **ABUELA ROSA**: Take this with you. **ELENA**: Abuela, this is yours. **ABUELA ROSA**: It's served its purpose for me. Maybe it will help you remember... that love doesn't end with distance. *(ELENA hugs ABUELA ROSA, then goes to MARIA)* **ELENA**: Mom, I love you. Everything you and Papa taught me, everything you sacrificed... it's all coming with me. You're not losing me. You're... you're sending me out into the world with everything you gave me. *(MARIA finally hugs her daughter)* **MARIA**: *(through tears)* Call me when you land. **ELENA**: I promise. **CARLOS**: And Elena? **ELENA**: Yeah, Papa? **CARLOS**: Make us proud. But more importantly... make yourself proud. *(The family embraces as lights slowly fade)* **END OF PLAY** --- *This script explores themes of family loyalty, personal growth, sacrifice, and the different ways we show love. It can be performed with minimal set requirements and focuses on character development and emotional truth.*
