The Eye Witness
When I opened my eyes I knew I was in a place I wasn't when I went to sleep. I tried to sit up but my body wouldn't listen to my mind. I could feel it was cold in the room. there was only one light hanging over me. I could tell I was laying on a cold table and my arms and legs were being held down by something. Even if I could make my body move someone sure made sure I couldn't leave. I tried to turn my head but again nothing happened. I looked around the ceiling to see if I could see anything that would help me. I could tell I was in a basement of some kind because of how the ceiling looked. wood flooring above me and the light was hanging from a string. I was definitely not in a hospital. I couldn't remember how I got here. As I was trying to think back I heard a door open. I closed my eyes and pretend I was sleeping. I was scared as I heard the steps of who ever had me was coming down the stairs. "Oh my how did a sweet little thing like you get here?" The voice was soft and what sounded like a grandma. I opened my eyes to see an elderly woman standing over me with a strange smile. "You are awake good. how are you?" I tried to answer, I tried to ask her to help me but my mouth wouldn't move. Thats when I saw something flash in the old women's eyes. "Did you think I would save you? I saw that hope in your eyes when you saw me. the problem is, I'm the one keeping you here." As I studied her closer the feel of her made my skin crawl. something was not right with this women. The old women had dark green eyes and yellowing teeth. her hair was long past her shoulders and dark as night. The old women started tracing a line down my arm with her finger. "Your skin is so soft, and your eyes are the perfect blue I've always loved. My fear was so high I felt like I was choking on it. my breathing became faster as the women kept touching parts of my body walking around me. You see I can't keep my good looks with out young ones like you. she stepped away from the table into the darkness of the basement. I couldn't see where she went but I hear what sounded like metal being dragged across the floor. when she stepped back into my sight line I saw what she was holding up. it was a scalpel. The sharp point she put right against my face so I could feel the cold metal. Tears started loading my eyes as the woman looked down at me. "You can try and mo e or struggle or even scream if you can but it won't help. not one person will hear you. I use to hate doing this but after the years I found fun in it. Now I don't have much time. I need your eyes now. sorry but you won't need them much longer." The lady stepped closer and held my left eye open with her free hand. The hand holding the scalpel came u der my eye and I felt a sharp pain as she started cutting. I was trying to scream but I couldn't make a sound. I could still see in the eye she had started to cut. Blood started streaming down my face as she cut the top of my eyelid. As I stared unable to move ISaw her put down the scalpel and her hand came to my eye she had been cutting. I could understand but the pain was soo bad I finally was able to scream as the last thing I saw was her hand pulling my eye out of its socket. I passed out unable to stand the pain anymore.
I woke up screaming from the horror of my nightmare to realize I was in my own real nightmare. I had fallen asleep in class, Again. everyone in class was staring at me and the teacher looked at me angry. "I'm glad you could sleep in my class again Sara. How about you go to the nurse and come back to class when your ready to work in my class." "I'm sorry," I said packing up my backpack n leaving class. Everyone in class was laughing as I left except my one friend in the whole school. I glaced at him as I left. He mouthed text me and I nodded. As the door closed for the class behind me I entered the empty hall. It was just a little after noon but I wasn't going to the nurse. I left the school and walked to my hide out. it wasn't too far from the school maybe a mile. it wS a quiet neighborhood that had a small walk way to the inter coastal. It had a bench right by the water. I never sat at the bench but on the cement wall that was behind a Seagrape bush just at the waters edge. I cli.ed on the wall and sat down taking a deep breathe of salty air. The ocean always helped me relax. I have been having g storage dreams like that since I turned 17this year. I found out that these dreams were not just dreams. I had thought for a long time it was because I watched scary movies but found out it wasn't. one morning after a horrible dream I saw the exact same scene on the news as I had seen in my dream. Except in my dream I saw it as if it had happened to me. It was a terrible car accident I had dreamt. I had been the pedestrian crossing the road who got hit by a red truck running a red light. after I had been hit in my dream I was unable to move as a man was siting next to me crying and screaming. I could barely breathe and I could feel all the pain from the car hitting me. When the news explained what happened I knew I had seen the accident happen. Some how I had been having dreams of these horrible accidents before they happened. I tried for a few months to stop the dreams from happening but nothing worked. no matter what I did all of my dreams showed who was going to die the next day. My best friend and only friend had noticed I became withdrawn. He cornered me after two months of me avoiding him. " Why are you avoiding me? Whats going on with you? please let me help." Thats all it took for me to break down crying g in his arms. Johnathan held me close as j cried till I couldn't anymore. we sat on the cement wall and I explained what had been happening. "I was so scared that I would see your death if you were around me. I didn't want to hurt you. I don't know how this works but I haven't been able to stop any of the deaths." Johnathan didn't laugh at me, he nodded and thought about it quietly. Johnathan and I had been friends since middle school. we lived right down the street from each other. we had become friends after my brother and his brother started hanging out. Johnathan was tall and had strong wide showers. his hair was short and black. He had the most deep green eyes and the biggest heart. A lot of girls liked him in school but he stayed to himself. We hung out after school every day. "Well maybe your just not getting the dreams early enough. you said it just started so why don't we work as a team and see what we can do together. " I smiled at hi.and hugged him. "Thank you." "No need to thank me. we are friends remember we help each other. Us against the world, Girl." we both laughed and looked out at the water.
I shook my head getting g the memory of that day out of my head. The dream today was different then before. I had never seen a murder, well it might not be a murder yet. The dream didn't show the person dieing, it just showed the woman taking the eye. I put my phone out and text Johnathan where to meet me. after I to him where to meet me I searched the internet for any mention of strange murders in the area. I was surprised to see that there had been a lot of strange muderes for almost over a century. people missing eyes, or kidneys oriole other body pars. The police had thought it was a black market selling body parts. None of the cases had been saved and the time between murders had been enough not to connect the dead people together. I figured it out just because of my dream. The lady needed the persons eyes for some reason and I didn't think it was for the act market money. When Johnathan showed up I explained the dream with the woman and the eye. I showed him the stuff I found on. the internet about the other mysterious murders. "Your right. I think its the same person. I also think its something that needs body parts of others to stay alive or young. I read a book not to long ago explaining a few different kinds of 'Others' that this could be. we need to be careful until we know whats going on and what we are dealing with." Johnathan and I have always known there were monsters out there. things no one wants to admit exist. When we got back to my house, we went I to the kitchen to get a snack. My mom was leaving for work and my step dad wasn't h ok me yet. the news was on as my ml. was running around getting everything she needed for work. "Tonight we will have the story of the missing teenage girl from the area. a picture popped up on the screen of a girl with short brown hair blue eyes and light skin. "She disappeared after school yesterday and never made it home. Her name is Gabriella White. She wS last seen leaving school headed in the direction of the light house. If you have any information please call the nu.ber on the bottom. of the screen." As I looked at the picture on the TV I had realized the girl in my dream was her. I knew because of her eyes. before I passed out in the dream the crazy woman had shown me my own eye, and it was her eyes. My mom gave me a kiss and told me to stay inside until my d ad got home. Johnathan and I went I to my room, and sat down. "That was her, the girl on the news. She's the one I dreamed of in class." "How do you know?" "Her eyes, I can tell. it was her eye the lady pulled out." Tne pain rain through me just as if I had just felt my eye being pulled out. my skin got covered in goosebumps as I thought about it. "Then let's try and save her." I looked over at him on my couch, he was seriouse. "How?" He dug through his backpack pulling out a crystal hanging from a silver chain. "I have been practicing a finding spell just for this. Pull up a map of the area o. ur phone. I haven't perfected it but O should be able to get close." I held my phone out showing the county we were in on a map. Johnathan closed his eyes and held the crystal over my phone. The crystal started to circle the phone swinging faster n faster u til it landed on my phone. I looked down at it the same time as Johnathan. the crystal had landed o. the light house. "Do you think the light house has a basement," i asked looking at hi.. "No but like I said she shod be close by. Johnathan and I went outside and grabbed our bikes. we packed a backpack with a flash light, knife, a battery for our phones and snacks. We headed off in the direction of the light house. I didn't think we would find anything, oh how wrong I was. This changed everything after that trip.
When we got to the Lighthouse we looked around. No basement in the lighthouse which we figured so we started riding down the road from the light house. it was supposed to be a dead end but at the very end of the road was a small shack. We stopped out bikes half way down the road and hide them encase this was the place we were looking for. we crept up to the house hiding behind bushes n trees. we saw a lot of trash and beer cans. "This is where so.e of the seniors come to party on weekends." Johnathan had whispered as we looked into a side window. It looked as of no one had lived there in years. there was a broken couch, trash all over, spray paint on the front door and inside walls. Even stupid devil signs. or what other people call devil sighs. just stupid nu.bers and drawings. We didn't see or hear anyone around so we went back to the front door. it was locked. Johnathan looked around again before picking up a rock and breaking the glass window. The glass breaking made me jump because I didn't actually think he was going to break the glass. Johnathan dusted the broken glass out of the way as he unlocked the window. "Ready, " he asked as he climbed in. "I guess," I said climbing in after him. when we were inside a creepy feeling crawled over my skin. That feeling from the lady had been in this house too. "I think she was here. It feels like that old lady in here," i said looking at him. He looked around and went towards the kitchen. I walked back to a room on the left of the living room where we entered. There was nothing but a bed and a night stand in this roo.. nothing seemed off except the smell was bad in this room. Johnathan yelled for me from the kitchen. "co.e here quick," he said. I ran to the kitchen with my heart almost beating out of my chest. K thought he got caught by an adult u til I ran into the kitchen. He was standing i front of the pantry looking in. I couldn't see what he was looking at until j got right next to him. There it was a door in the back wall of the pantry. "you think she's down there?" "um," was all I could say. I stepped in front of hi
and reached for the door nobe. When my hand touched it I felt a just of lighting go through me and vision so flashed in my mind. People screaming, blood, something shiny and metal. Then a picture of the old woman with a smile full of sharp teeth and her eyes slit like a cats. "This is it," I said as I turned the nobe and opened the door. The smell hit me first. it was putrid. it smelledike meat had gone bad. A lot of bad meat. there was. smell glow of a light far below the dark steps. "eww what is thT smell," Johnathan asked pinching his nose so he couldn't smell it much. "It smells like rotin meat. If she's down there we need to check." I made myself breathe through my mouth and I slowly walked down the dark steps. "Hey I'm staying up here encase someone comes and we gotta run." Johnathan said as he stayed in the door way looking back into the kitchen. "Fine, I got my phone give me the flash light and knife" Johnathan pulled the pack off his back and handed me both. I turned the flash light on and started walking down the steps. I started hearing a small dripping sound as I walked down the steps. I was three steps from the bottom when I froze. I heard something that sounded like a dog whimpering. "Hello, is anyone here?" I finally made it to the bottom of the stairs and looked to the left where the soft glow was coming from. My eyes went wide as I saw what was under the hanging light. it was a solid steal table with a blanket covering something on the table. I started walking closer when I swear the thing under the blanket started moving. I walked closer to the table and grabbed the corner of the blanket. I took a deep breathe and pulled the blanket hoping I wasn't uncovering the old women or a half dead dog. it was much worse. The girl who had gone missing was strapped to the table. her face had bandages covering her eyes and her hands Nd legs were being held down to the table. I started cutting immediately trying to be quiet. "hey are you up?" her hand twitched,"please." it was so soft i almost missed her saying it. "ease no more." "Its ok, I'm a friend im getting you out of here." I started cutting her lwg free as she moved her hand slowly to her face. "Don't remove those, we don't have the cops or an ambulance. We were just looking around and found you." I cut her leg free and pulled my phone out. I dialed 911 and continued cutting her free. "please we need police and an ambulance to the light house. I found the missing girl. she's real hurt please hurry."
As I was cutting her last arm free Johnathan came running down the stairs. "Someone's pulling up in a silver car, we gotta," Johnathan had stopped mid sentence after seeing me and the girl on the table. "I called the cops already we need to help her get out n hide till they get here. Johnathan came running over as I tried to help her sit up. what ever drug this thing gave her the gi could barely move. "Stedy yourself siting for a minute while I look for an exit down here." Johnathan held Gabriella up while I tan up the stairs and closed and locked the door from the inside. I could hear the car door close and foot steps coming to the house as I ran down to look for a window or something. just past the table Gabriella had been tied to I saw a solid book shelf and a washing machine. right above the wShjng machine was a small window. my heart was beating so fast. My mind d was screaming run but I was not going to leave my best friend and this hurt girl behind. "come on think," I said to myself looking around for an answer. We all heard the front door open and we stayed still not wanting the person to know we were there. Johnathan was helping Gabriella stand next to the table when I felt a cool breeze ruffle the hair on the back of my neck. I turned around to the book case. why was there cool air coming from the book cSe. I ran over to it and started ppl unlink books off. "WhY are you doing? wh ok ever or WhT evr it is might hear us." "I don't think that matters now. we need to get out. it won't take that thing long to get in here." I started pushing the half empty book shelf away from. the wall. "I felt. draft i think there's a door or window behind this book shelf." As soo. as I had said that we all heard the door knock to the basement turn. "You locked the door little one. Don't worry I have a key. you know you can't go anywhere. y I u can't even see." The voice sounded like the lady in my dream but it sounded less old. "please don't let her get me," Gabriella started to cry. Her bandages were starting to get wet with bloody tears. Gabriella walked closer to the book case with Johnathan help. "Hold on to this," Johnathan said as he pulled her hand the the dryer to steady herself. All of us were breathing hard listening to the foot steps walk from the kitchen into the room I had looked around in. Johnathan helped me push the book shelf away from the wall and there in the middle were steps leading up to a cellar wood door. "It must lead out, we need to go." Johnathan started to push at the wood doors only to realize they were locked. I had Gabriella's arm around d me as I helped to the stairs. "Its locked, I need to hit it hard. its old I. sure it will break." As he hit the door the first time we heard the steps from. upstairs getting faster. what ever it was, was still in the room upstairs rummaging around, looking for the key, I was guessing. as Johnathan hit the door with all his might for the second time the steps sped up and were now heading back to the kitchen. "Hurry," I said feeling my heart in my throat scared about what might come down those stair. As he hit the door for the third time it finally gave and broke open outward. The sun shone through the door was as we heard the door unlock from behind us. Johnathan ran up the few steps turning and holding g his hand ok ut for one of us to grab. I shoved Gabriella up as Johnathan hand closed around hers pulling her out of the basement. I the foot steps coming down. the stairs were fast, I barely glanced back as I bulted up the stairs into the open back yard. as I had looked back as I ran for the tree line I thought I saw a young woman with the same pitch black hair as the old lady I had saw. when we a made it to the tree line we were running for the light house. Johnathan had stopped trying to pull Gabriella by her hand and just picked her up as we ran. I didn't hear anyone fallow g us but that didn't mean I was going to stop running. something in my mind kept yelling "RUN." My mind told me if I hesitated I would die. We ran all the way back to the light house. once we got there I opened the door and we ran inside locking the door behind me. Johnny sat Gabriella on the first steps as I slide down the door with my back against it trying to catch my breathe. just as I hit the floor something slammed into the lighthouse door throwing me to the stairs. Johnathan ran to the door pushing against it to stop what ever it was from getting I side. I jumped up and pushed against the door to as something hit the door again causing us to bounce from the impact. the lock help as we pushed with all we had against the attack. There was silence after that hit to the door. Then we heard the sirens coming from down the road. "I'll find you and finish the job tonight. I caught you once I'll catch you again," said a soft women's voice on the other side of the door. Johnathan and I heard her but Gabriella was still crying on the stairs and hadn't heard the threat. We backed away from the door as the sirens of the police and ambulance came closer. we both fell to the ground breathing hard and shaking. It seemed like forever until we heard a soft knock on the door. All of us jumped and Gabriella screamed. "Its the police please open the door." It was a strong male voice, and i had recognized it. Its Was Dave the detective from the police. "Johnathan got close to the door. "It could be a trap," he whispered. "Slide you badge under the door," he said stepping back from the door. it was a minute later we saw a silver police badge slide under the door With David Knickles enscribed on it. Johnathan signed and opened the door. David came in slowly taking in the scene. Gabriella was still crying with her arms wrapped Round her legs hugging herself. the bandages over her eye were slipping off because they were smoked in sweat, tears and blood. I was on the floor on my hands and knees trying to breathe and Johnathan was standing next to the door. Davin stepped back out of the doorway and called over the emts. After two eats entered and went straight to Gabriella I walked out side to the left around the lighthouse. I fell back to the ground and started puking. Sweat dripping off my forehead and acid from. my stomach burning my throat as I puked anything in my stomach up. Johnathan came over n bent down to hold my hair back from falling I. the throw up. He whispered, " Look we don't know what actually happened. we can't tell the police we were following a hunch on your dream. let's just go with we were looking into the hang out spot for the seniors when we heard her moaning and found her like that." I nodded my head in agreement as David walked over to us. I sat back on my heals and looked up as I used my shirt to wipe my face. David looked down at us both and back at the lighthouse. we saw the paramedics wheeling Gabriella out on a stretcher, thats when I saw the door. The lighthouse door had three big dents in it right by the doorknob. the dents were so deep it had buldge the door inward and was now looking like it was about to fall off. "What happened here you two," David asked looking at us. David had been a senior when I entered 9th grade. We had beco.e real good friends when I had found out he was dating a friend of mine. David knew I had been the weird one in school and everyone thought I was on drug because of the falling asleep in class thing. Not just that, but the school had started a rumor I was in a gang. David knew I wasn't but he sure did know I was in deep with what happened to Gabriella. After I went over everything explaining we had come down to check it out because someone had said there was going to b a party Friday. Johnathan and I explained our lie effortlessly because we knew what each other were thinking. Sometimes I swear we heard each other in our heads. "So you came down here to see what it was like before the party and y I u just so happen to hear Gabriella in the basement?" "Yes David, she was lucky we found her,"I said not adding any more details. "OK that explains how you found her, but how do you explain that?" He asked poi ting his thumb over his shoulder at the lighthouse. "When we cut her loose we heard someone coming in the front door. we found a way out of the basement and ran hear. we thought who ever was in the house had come back to take Gabriella. We ran here and hide in the lighthouse locking the door. while we were waiting something was trying to get in. we didn't know what it was but we're afraid it was who had taken Gabriella. " David nodded, "Who ever it was didn't want Gabriella to be taken away." "Fo you know what happened to her," David asked looking straight into my eyes. "No, we didn't have time to ask," I said flatly. David nodded again understanding we had been worried for our lives. "The ambulance over there are going to take your I you two to the hospital and check you out. Did you see who might have done this. I looked back at Johnathan and he looked at me. "I should at least tell hi. her hair color. he won't believe its a woman yet," I had said in my head. Johnathan gavethe smallest of nods when he stood up holding his hand out for me to grab. "I think I saw dark black hair as we ran to the Lighthouse. "I don't know if that person was involved." David again nodded as the paramedics from the second ambulance came up to use and started to wrap a blood pressure cuff around my arm and asking me questions. David took one more look at the lighthouse door. "I'll meet you at the hospital. I'm going to contact your parents and let the. know whT happened. we can go over your statements at the hospital. You both need to get checked out." we both shook our heads and David left to talk to other police officers. The paramedics held my arms as I walked to the ambulance. I hadn't notice but tears were streaming down my face and my whole body was shaking. I didn't even notice I had cuts all over my arms and legs from running through the trees to get to safety. As we rode to the hospital Johnathan and I were silent. So much had just happened today.
