Chapter 1 Fay University and the new decree
“Melody Landers.” Her teacher spoke to her as if she was not listening to him. Melody opened her eyes, blinking until she notices her teacher. She is a blue-haired fay with purple eyes. “Sorry Prof, I have been quite busy.” The teacher glared at her for sleeping in class. “Busy sleeping?” He asked with a modulated voice. Melody’s hand trembles as she looks at him nervously. “Yes, I’m afraid your class is quite boring.” Her classmates laughed at what she said, even though it was the truth. “Stop laughing students. Be mature enough and act like a proper young adult!” Mr. Sham never fails to silence the class’ crowd. “Melody, meet me at the detention room after class.” Mr. Sham went to his desk and opened a chalk box. He wrote his topic on the board: Elemental Magic History. Melody grinned at the topic. It wasn’t easy for most, but to Melody, it was the easiest. She read all about the history, how the Fay began using dark and light magic.             “Does anyone have an idea about its history?” Mr. Sham fixed his bushy white mustache. He was the eldest professor at this University. His face had an oval shape, few wrinkles, and silver eyes with rounded glasses. Melody raised her hand with vigor. “Yes, sleepy Melody?” Mr. Sham teased her, he asked her to stand up and tell the class her idea. “First of all, not all faeries have elemental magic. It is rare because some fay isn’t born with it and they need to cultivate it first.”             Mr. Sham smiled, he at least thought: Melody likes to self-study even though she sleeps in his class. “Smart answer Ms. Landers.” A genuine smile was plastered on his face. Melody’s grin faded away as the Dean opened the classroom door. “Mr. Sham, we need to talk.” The Dean blurted out in a quick and squeaky manner. “Sorry class, I got to go. Class dismissed.” Melody’s classmates fly using their wings like a swarm of bees getting out of their hive.             Melody stayed and didn’t care if she was left behind. She took out a paper and pen, beginning to write words she needed to say before going home. She wrote: “Mom, I need to apply for a job. I only need 20 reckles and 50 masin coins. Enough for me to live alone independently.” She crumpled the paper and dropped it in her green leafy bag. Wren Milford passed by her classroom. A greened haired fairy with yellow eyes and dark skin. He took a peep and noticed her fixing her bag’s contents. “Hey,” Wren sighed looking at her from the class’ door.             “I bet you are still ignoring me, Mel.” Mel is what he usually calls her, a shorter version of Melody. Melody and Wren have a complicated relationship. Wren always annoyed her whenever he can. He hides his true feelings from Melody. Melody glanced at him. “You seek to pester me, again aren’t you?” Melody walked out of the door, passing by Wren. She smelled the strong cologne he personally made himself. “Funny, I guess you are right Mel.” Maybe if he knew how problematic Melody was, he would have helped her with money. Each reckles cost a full day’s meal and 10 masin coins cost a quarter of each reckle.             “Mel, are you okay?” He asked her softly. “Maybe if you weren’t always pestering me!” She used an insulting hand signal that faeries do. The ring finger and the middle finger beside each other while the other fingers are bent down. Wren just smiled. He had always been happy around his Mel. He went in the opposite direction of Mel in the hallway.                 Melody entered the detention room, eager to leave soon. She waited for Mr. Sham to arrive. She opened her bag and took out the crumpled paper and read it aloud. Muttering it in slurred words. She stopped as the door opened. “Benji, why are you here?” She asked as he entered. His black hair, red eyes were evidence that he is Benji. “I pranked the teacher and my classmate reported me.” She nodded after he responded. “You should be at home Melody,” He sat down beside her seat. “If only Mr. Sham was a fun teacher.” Melody placed the crumpled paper quickly in her bag.             An elderly woman in a robe entered the room. Her lips are red as wine, circular-shaped face and green eyes, and French braided hair. She looked like a thirty or forty-year-old Faerie. She had a red tattoo on her wrist. “I’m Claire Bilborne, your discipline teacher. Students like you will be going through community services and 1 day out of class as a first warning.” Benji wasn’t happy neither was Melody.             “Yes, Mrs. Bilborne.” They both agreed even they aren’t willing to. “You must fill out these papers as soon as possible. The Vampire Queen will be announcing her new decrees in 50 minutes. The papers were 13 pages long as Mrs. Bilborne made them appear before them. They were questioned on why they did what they did in exquisite detail. It was like a test with lots of multiple choices and essays. Both of them are having a hard time answering, it was torture!             “Times up, detention is over. Pens down!” Claire demanded. They weren’t able to finish it. With frowns on their faces, Mrs. Bilborne grinned slyly. “At least you both answered. Now, you need to get a pass to clean the Flora Garden and Faerie manor.” Melody wished she hadn’t sleep in Mr. Sham’s class, she won’t be here right now if that didn’t happen.   “Mrs. Bilborne, where will we get the pass?” Benji fixed his black hair, his intense black eyes didn’t bother Mrs. Bilborne. “From the teacher you had offended, Mr. Arleen.” Benji then took out a small leaf notebook and pen from his bag. He jotted down all he needed to do. Melody was silent, her blue hair began floating. Anger was flowing through Melody.
