June's Pov
Our game continued, only pausing at times when he would have to check out a customer. Most of them would direct their conversation to me, as if I was the one checking them out, not JJ. They seemed to try to avoid talking to him, but I wasn't sure why. The revelation hit me like a ton of bricks. Not one adult talked to JJ unless they absolutely had to.
“I need to get home. Dad will be awake soon, and I honestly haven't spent enough time with him. I need to get his dinner ready.” I got off the chair, feeling like my bottom was oddly numb but also sore from sitting too long on that old, worn out chair.
"Let me take a break and walk you back. I don't want you walking alone. Remember, June, you can't go anywhere without someone with you.”
