Chapter 20 Talk

Rudy smiled.

"To be honest, I don’t know a lot about him. I’m no expert!” Rudy gave a light laugh.

“Oh! It doesn’t have to be a professional opinion, just chatting between friends.” The woman smiled.

“Well, personally I think James Cameron is a great director.” Rudy replied.

“You know, I would love to hear your opinion on his movie ‘Titanic’…” she said.

“I loved the movie ‘Titanic’, he did a fantastic job directing that.” Rudy responded with a smile.

“It’s rare to come across someone interested in football as well as movies, it’s good to have a variety of interests.” The woman smiled at Rudy.

Rudy froze for a moment, he wondered how she knew that he was a fan of football and then remembered that he was wearing his Manchester United t-shirt.

He smiled back and answered her honestly;

“I have a lot of interests, football is my number one priority but I enjoy movies.”

“Haha! That’s kind of funny. I’m the other way around, I love movies the most but I enjoy football occasionally too!” The woman replied with humor in her voice.

Rudy laughed, it was refreshing to have a pleasant conversation and not feel stressed about the club.

“By the way, my name is Rudy Silver. I’m American, but I live in Manchester.” Rudy extended his hand across the seat to offer a handshake.

“I’m May Stark, from London.” She said, removing her glasses and taking the offered hand. “My grandfather is American, but he lived in the U.K for most of his life.” She smiled pleasantly.

"Really? That’s wonderful, it’s always nice to meet fellow Americans!” Rudy returned the smile and suddenly understood the familiarity he felt seeing her.

“There is only one problem though, my grandfather is an Arsenal fan!” May laughed.

“Well that makes us enemies then!” Rudy laughed as well.

They continued to chat and the time passed all too quickly, instead of the boring plane ride he had expected, Rudy found himself disappointed when the flight attendant spoke over the intercom asking everyone to fasten their seatbelts and prepare for landing.

As the plane began it’s descent, May put the magazine in her bag and put her seatbelt on.

"It has been lovely talking to you May, I hope we will meet again in the future.” Rudy spoke honestly.

“It been nice talking to you too, I certainly hope that we will meet again.” May returned the smile.

As the plane taxied into the runway, people were allowed to turn their phones on again, May reached into her bag and dialed a number.

“Hey baby, I have just landed in Paris.” She said with a smile.

Rudy was close enough to hear the response on the other end of the line;

“Ok baby, enjoy your time, have a good rest and enjoy The World Cup. When you get back we can organize the wedding.”

"Oh John, I’m so sorry. I have to go to Hollywood for an audition. I couldn’t pass it up, I’m sorry.” May replied.

“May! I thought we discussed this before you went away. I thought we were getting married when you got back. Have you changed your mind?” John sounded shocked.

“No! I haven’t changed my mind. I just don’t want to miss this opportunity.” May replied blushing, she was aware that Rudy could hear the entire conversation.

“May listen to me, the director is not well known, the other actors are b-list if that. You deserve better, this opportunity is not as good as you think. Just enjoy your vacation and we will talk about it when you get back.” John said.

“You know I have been waiting for a break for a long time, I need to chase this. I have already decided to go to Hollywood, I’ve booked the ticket for the earliest possible flight tomorrow.” May responded.

“You know May, I’m confused. We spoke about this, you said you were going to give up acting after we got married but now you are going ahead and chasing another role, I can’t help but feel that you are trying to postpone this marriage indefinitely.” John’s voice drifted through the phone.

“I have had enough of you being selfish and telling me what to do!” May raised her voice, the blush creeping up her neck. “I don’t like it and I can do whatever I want.” May had raised her voice. “Goodbye John.” May finished and hung up the phone abruptly.

May walked through the airport terminal, determined to follow through with what she wanted, repeating ‘I can do this’ over and over to reassure herself. She made her way to the ticket office and booked the earliest available flight to L.A.

May obviously made it to L.A, she had a successful audition and went on to become a famous, well known actress in Hollywood. She appeared in several Hollywood movies and Rudy had no idea how his chance encounter with her had changed the course of her career.

Rudy walked through the small province of Yviore, in the southern suburbs of France. He was thinking about where he was going to start searching for players. Yviore had a very small population however, they used to have a football club here and there were a few famous players that had started their careers here.

This did not mean, however that the level of players was high, it would be difficult to find potential players. Rudy suddenly had an idea, he hailed a cab and told the driver to head to the old football stadium in town.
