BETRAYAL Hours and hours passed in that deserted shop and I felt lonelier and lonelier, so much so that when a soldier unexpectedly appeared I was looking forward to befriending him. Perhaps I was lowering my defences out of solitude. He immediately struck up a conversation, and proved to be nice enough that I soon trusted him – it was a naive mistake on my part. He brought me excellent food, so I didn’t need to eat any more of the shop’s stale supplies. In a short time, dried and salted meat was replaced by fresh game, which I somehow managed to cook. I also had a little more colour in my cheeks. Strange as it may seem, for once I felt serene and content. I even tried to keep the place tidy and decent, restoring life to normality with it.
