Gran took the last week to get her affairs in order to leave the safety of the city with me to go to the cabin. We had everything packed. I sent a letter to my best friend explaining what I safely could to her. Leaving her instructions to call me when she had a chance and I would explain everything to her.
“Are you ready?” Gran asked as she walked into my room, holding her bags.
“Yes, I am going to put this in the mail before we leave the gates.” I said holding up the letter.
I grabbed my bags before turning around and examining the room I will never see again, turning my lights off and shutting the bedroom door. Gran and I made our way to the gate with our exit passes, the guards smiled at Gran was we walked up but quickly changed their expressions when they seen me. I smiled softly, as Gran spoke, “Goodmorning gentlemen, my granddaughter and I are headed to my camp site for a few days. We have our passes.” Gran took my pass from my hand and gave them to the closest guard.
“Evangeline, you know how dangerous it can be out there, she’s never been beyond the wall, are you sure you will be alright?” the guard asked. I’ve never heard anyone call Gran by her full name before.
“We will be just fine, I know my way around the dangers, and as you can see”, Gran pointed back to where I was standing uncomfortably close to her. “I don’t think I will have to worry about her wondering far at all or, putting herself in danger.” Gran chuckled.
The guard sighed before nodding to the other guard to open the gate. “Have a nice camping trip and stay safe” the guard said as he glared at me. Only the elders can leave the protection of the wall when they please with permission because they witnessed the c*****e of the war. They know the dangers and how to stay safe.
It used to not be that way but a few years back when I was only a child, a group of high school graduates when out to camp and drink for a weekend in the woods; they wondered too far and ended up falling prey to the wendigo. After guards found what was left, the counsel deemed it to unsafe for the younger generations to leave the wall unless accompanied by an elder.
As the gate opened the smell of wet grass hit my nose and the sun shine hit the trees in just the right way for the leaves to look light green and the dew of the grass to glisten.
