Chapter 11

Nyx POV

I feel a dull ache that makes me move slowly. The light is bright coming through the window. I recognize this smell, that sterile smell that brings me back to that damn facility. I try to come back to my senses, starting with moving my fingers, then my hands. Slowly, as I open my eyes, I realize that I'm nowhere familiar. My heart starts racing. I feel a slight warmth coming from my right hand and realized that Mila is sleeping besides me.

How long have I been out? Where are we?

I slowly take my hand out of her grasp and notice the cables attached to my chest. Looking around, I don't see people by the door. All I can see is the equipment around us, and a white board that had some information. It had my name and it said that I was being monitored. I start removing the cables and the needle that's stuck in my arm. I take the oxygen off and quietly woke Mila up. She sees me and brightens up.

I'm so glad you're okay! I was actually getting scared this time! said Mila as I got up from the couch she was in. She had moved it close to the bed, I guess to keep my hand wrapped in hers. It was something that gave both of us a sense of ease. I asked her if she had some spare clothing, which she did since the people here provided it for her. I grab a pair of black pants with a long sleeved black shirt. My boots and jacket are still here so I put those on as well. The jacket might look worn and dirty, but its better than nothing. I tell Mila to get ready, we have to get out of wherever we are. She stays in place and tells me not to worry. When I asked her what she meant by that, she told me that we were in wolf-pack territory and that we were safe.

There it was. My heart sank. Just what I needed, wolves. I know I could handle anything, but my visceral response is filled with dread and memories that shake me to the core.

As I'm about to pull her towards me and make a crazy exit, the door opens up. A doctor walks through it along with one of the men we saw earlier, Luke I believe.

Hello, I hope you don't intend to leave as you have not been discharged yet. The doctor says while giving me a smile that I could've sworn was warm and welcoming. I just stood there, with multiple thoughts running through my head, I start weighing my options. Mila tells me to not be concerned, that they helped us and brought us here. Even as I hear this, I feel uneasy. Flashbacks of previous experiences start going through my head. They feel quite overwhelming. I can feel myself slipping as my breath becomes shallow, but before I do, I go back to my senses. I look at Mila, she knew what I was going to do. She holds my hand, giving me a sad gaze. I touch the glass window and make it shatter with my touch. It's one of the abilities I have, or "gifts" as they called them, and we jump out. I didn't even think of the height. I made sure that Mila was behind me so that I could catch her at the bottom. Luckily, it was just a few feet. Luke looks through the window in shock of what just happened. I grab Mila's hand and I start moving before anyone tries to circle us. I don't know where we are going but we just have to go. I see a gate close to us and Mila stops.

Mila, what are you doing? We have to go!

Mila looks at me with a sad expression and tells me, no we don't. I'm tired of running. They are offering us a place to live. We can be safe here.

Are my ears betraying me? The same girl who ran with me and cowered behind me is standing right in front of me saying that she will not leave. How can we know for sure that this is in fact a good place to live? Can this truly be somewhere she calls home? Somewhere were she would not be found?

I think we need to take a step back and reconsider. Says a tall man. He has long blond hair that is tied up, showing the sides of his head, which were shaven. His olive green eyes are cold as he stares at me. Besides him, another man shows up. He is an exact copy of the other, but with short hair and a short groomed beard.

Nyx, these are Theo and Zach. Again, they don't mean us any harm. Can you please just hold on a moment and talk? Asked Mila as I couldn't stop staring at them like I was ready to kill or lose my life trying.

I told the doctor about you! Six words, six words that froze me on the spot. I looked at her blankly. I had no response.

The doctor knows, but she didn't do anything. In fact, all she did was help you. You are awake because of her!

My mouth was open but I had no words to say. The two look-alikes, Theo and Zach slowly got closer and Mila stepped to them.

She doesn't know you or any better. Please just wait. Said Mila, which made my brain race twice as fast as it did before.

Its okay Mila, our intent is not to scare her. Why don't we go back inside? Let's talk about this. Said the short-haired one as he looked at me.

Our Alpha, meaning, our leader, is offering you sanctuary. Wouldn't you at least hear him out? It's the least you could do since he helped you both.
