Chapter 1: Unexpected Revelations
POV: Bella I closed the café doors with difficulty. It was hard to do that without the help of Mason, my best friend. "I never thought I'd see you miss two days in a row. Did something happen? Answer me as soon as you can, I'm worried." I typed the fourth message quickly, as he seemed intent on ignoring me since his mouth got too close to mine. Since he said I was more special than I should be, when I had the courage to tell him I was dating. I put the phone in my pocket, along with my apron, trying not to think about it. Mason would respond as soon as he could. In a matter of seconds, my bag was on my shoulder and my feet moved automatically until I had the impressive sight of the most expensive Audi on the market parked just in front of the café. Anton was already there, as he was every afternoon. My mind wandered enough not to notice my boyfriend was on the phone until I was a few inches from the partially open window. "I wonder if you'll ever grow up, Vincent, and stop wasting my time." I heard a deep voice from the phone. "Don't call me that anymore, damn it! The family belongs to you, forget I ever had the De Luca surname, forget I ever had that name, Leo!" He said loudly enough to snap my body out of the trance, and I pressed my fingers even harder against the car's body where I was leaning. My bag slipped off my shoulder. Anton was part of the mafia. Anton had been lying to me this whole time, and I had no idea who he was. I wanted to leave, but I couldn't. My feet seemed glued to the ground, and in a matter of seconds, he was in front of me. My eyes just stared at him as if he was now a complete stranger. "Bella. It's not what you're thinking." I heard the words, though I couldn't process them. "You..." I replied weakly, my vision blurred, as I took a step back, distancing myself from him. Anton's brown eyes turned into dark clouds, almost like flames. He tried to approach, while all I did was move further away. "Are you a criminal?" I asked, finally able to focus on his eyes. "You're losing your mind!" The rage was obvious in his voice as he took a few more steps and I moved further back, distracted for a moment by the sharp pain in my chest. His hands managed to reach my body and he wrapped his fingers around my forearm. "Let me go, I want to go home!" I said, trying to avoid his touch, but it was in vain. He squeezed my arm tighter, his expression fluctuating between anger and despair. "Get in the car, Bella! You don't understand the situation, everything I've done was for us." "I won't get in the car. Let me go..." My voice wavered, but I tried to stay firm. "You've forced me to do this by being so sensitive! You need me, no man will be better for you than I am... You're not going to leave me, Bella." He said, and soon Anton released one of my arms, dragging me roughly to the side, realizing the street was empty. He took advantage of the car's open door, and his fingers opened it, ignoring my resistance and screams. On impulse, I bit his arm, eliciting a groan of pain, while I struggled desperately to break free, fear spreading throughout my body. It was a side of him I had never witnessed. However, I could only perceive his growing fury. He lunged at me, throwing me into the back seat as if I were insignificant, closing the door while I pounded on the window, even feeling the pain where his fingers touched, despite his touches always having been gentle. What was happening to Anton? "What are you doing?! You can't keep me captive!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face as I heard the car start as quickly as possible. Anton looked at me coldly for seconds through the rearview mirror, before his eyes fixed on the dashboard, as the car accelerated faster and faster. "Don't waste your breath, your destiny is mine." I gripped the seatbelt tightly, seeking a minimum of protection. "Who are you, Anton? Why are you doing this?" I asked, my voice trembling. "I am the man who had everything, Bella. I was part of one of the most powerful mafia families. But everything changed when I met you. I left my life to be with you. That's why we need to stay together. You and I, against the world. And if it means taking extreme measures to keep this love, so be it." He stated, his voice becoming colder, more distant, and calm with each passing second. I desperately tried to open the door, but to my dismay, it was locked. A wave of dread made me recall the phone in my pocket, and with trembling hands, I reached for it. My fingers struggled to input some numbers on the screen, while I felt my heart racing. The device felt heavy, especially when I sensed Anton's hateful gaze staring at me through the rearview mirror, unconcerned with the road. "Son of a bitch." He let go of the steering wheel with one hand and tried to snatch the device from me. Desperately, I pulled back the phone, holding it firmly to avoid it falling onto the car floor. Our hands clashed, and the device almost slipped out of my reach, giving Anton enough reason not to give up. The car began to swerve on the road, out of control, until he managed to. Anton wrestled the device from me, but it was too late for both of us. A deafening noise echoed in the air. The sound of tires skidding on the road and metal twisting. My eyes closed as I was certain this was the end. The impact caused my body to slam aggressively against the driver's seat, where Anton should have been. My head throbbed for seconds before everything turned to darkness.
