Chapter 1: More than a team
Is everything alright, Miss?"
"Huh..?" Sofia muttered subconsciously. She then turned to face the direction from which the voice came, and standing right, there was a young man dressed in a black suit. Most probably in his mid twenties, she reckoned. With jet-black hair and a well-chiseled face, he was... handsome.
"Hey, you! Walk away." The buggler warned as he then pointed the gun directly at the stranger.
He didn't flinch and barely even changed his facial expression. It was just like the buggler was pointing a toy at him.
"Are you okay, Miss?" He asked again, both hands in his trouser pockets.
Wait, was this guy for real? Sofia thought. This dude is clearly pointing a gun at him right now, and the only thing you are concerned about is if I'm okay? Weird.
Besides, that accent. That's... Sofia sighed. Americans, why am I not surprised?
"I said walk away, dude!" The buggler shouted once again. "This is none of your business, Pendejo. So, I suggest you run along now."
The stranger said, "So.. You're a little thief," he raised his head and looked at the buggler.
The buggler grew ferocious and swung through gun at him in order not to draw too much attention. The stranger dodged his. Swung and gave him a back kick that knocked him off.
The stranger went on to pick up Sofía's bag and the gun, handed the bag to her, and went his way.
Who is this guy, Sofia thought, then said, "Are you not going to let me thank you first?" she asked.
But the stranger refused to reply to her and walked away when Sofía's friend came asking her what had happened.
She’s stunned by the way Diego handled the thief and the fact that he walked away without expecting anything.
“Who just walks away like that?” Sofía wondered. Most men in Mexico would have bragged or demanded something in return. But this man carried himself differently, like someone who had walked through darker places.”
As Diego walks away, the narration can slip briefly into his mind. "It has been seven whole years since the death of my parents, my mother, who died of cancer, and my dad, who was shot by the Los Charros a.k.a horsemen gang, a family that has ruled Mexico City for centuries, controlling the city inside out, it's time for them to pay!"
As Diego went on, a voice from his earphones came up," Kelvin, are you OK? His friend Caroline, who is one of his friends, met him in Los Angeles and was among the team helping him to achieve his revenge.
"I'm fine, Caroline. I will be with you guys shortly," Diego responded, who is now known as Kelvin Kent.
"Ok, nice moves, by the way," Caroline whispered.
"It was nothing," Kelvin said, laughing.
"Yeah, whatever, bye..... see you soon, everyone is at Base," Caroline said.
"Yeah, I will be right there shortly. Don't worry about me. This was once my town," Kelvin replied.
"I believe you, OK bye," Caroline said and hung up the call.
Kelvin then took his care and went first to get the team some ice cream and head back to base.
Kelvin then took his car and went out first, driving into the city. The evening sun was sliding low, painting the streets in gold, and for a moment, the weight of revenge loosened its grip on him. He stopped by a small corner shop he and his team had visited once before and picked up ice cream for everyone — their unspoken ritual after long, exhausting days.
The vendor, an old man with a crooked smile, handed him the bag with a knowing nod. Kelvin returned the smile faintly before heading back to the base.
When he arrived, the others were already sprawled out in the living room, half-arguing over a card game. Their faces lit up as soon as they saw what he carried. It was a small thing, but moments like these reminded them they were more than soldiers on a mission — they were family.
As they were having their ice cream, Leo asked, "What's the next move, boss Kelvin?" He said and laughed. Leo was the smartest of them all. He could hack anything with electricity with his software device he created.
"Yeah, Kelvin, next move, because I want to kick some ass if you ask me," Theo said, Leo's brother, who is the strongest among them.
"Hold your horses horsemen," Caroline said, the only female among them and also the shapes.
"Nice one," Leo said and burst into laughter.
"Leo, stop guffing around. Can you help us hack into Sofía's phone?" Kelvin asked.
"Can I? Really, men, Leo said.
"Sorry, could you just do it? Kelvin replied.
"Hmmm, watch and learn," Leo cracked his fingers and turned to his computer. It was not even up to a minute, and he had entered.
"I'm in," Leo said.
"That was fast," Caroline whispered.
"Nice so.. what did you get?" Kelvin asked.
"Turns out to be she... is planning to go shopping with her friend tomorrow. They are chatting right now, so let me check the old charts. If there is anything relevant there," Leo said.
"Yeah, you do that," Kelvin replied.
"Turns out she has been talking about you after the stuff you pulled today," Loe said.
"Looks like she attracted, I guess our plan is walking," Caroline said.
"It meant to be walking for you guys but not for me, I wanna hit something," Theo said.
"Don't worry about that. Time will come. For now, let everyone try to get some rest big day ahead of us tomorrow," Kelvin said.
They all went to their separate rooms when Kelvin sat in the corridors upstairs, viewing the city when Caroline walked towards him.
"I thought you said we should get some rest. What are you doing awake," Caroline said.
"Couldn't sleep," Kelvin replied.
"We are going to get to the bottom of this stop thinking too much and focus," Caroline said.
"Yeah, I just remembered a saying my mum told me on the day of my birthday because I couldn't remember it was my birthday."
"She said that she had told us to stop wasting money on her and let her die that it was no use, I tried to encourage her, but she refused, She always said I should try as much as possible not to let her life affect mine in this world, now look at me now," Kelvin said, little tears dropping from his eyes.
"It's gonna be already looking at the bright side. You turn out just fine. You are a molty millionaire now," Caroline said and gave him a huge hug.
"Thanks, C, you're the best," Kelvin replied.
