Chapter 1The Words He Chose in Front of Everyone
"I release you." The words hit Elena before she understood them. Three years of marriage, undone in four words, spoken in front of three hundred wolves who had eaten at her table and called her Luna to her face. Scott did not raise his voice. He never had to. An Alpha's voice carried on its own, low and even, filling every corner of the packhouse without effort. "As my mate," he said. "As my Luna, effective tonight." Elena's knees buckled first. Her hand found the edge of the head table before the rest of her went down with it. The bond did not break quietly. It tore, root and all, out of the center of her chest, and for one long second she could not breathe past the shape of the hole it left behind. Someone near the back of the room gasped. Someone else did not bother to hide a small, satisfied breath. That was Cynthia. Elena did not need to look to know. "Scott." Her voice cracked on his name and she hated it, hated that even now some stubborn, i***t part of her still wanted to reach for him and fix whatever had gone wrong. Scott did not reach back. "You've been a good wife," he said, like he was reading from a card. "A dutiful Luna, But I can't keep asking my wolf to want something it's never wanted. It isn't fair to either of us." Elena stared at him. At the man she had shared a bed with for three years, who had just severed the one bond that was supposed to mean forever, and who now looked almost sorry about it. The way a man looks sorry for stepping on someone's shoe. Not the way he should have looked, taking a knife to the center of her life in front of everyone she knew. "Mom." Theo's voice cut through the ringing in her ears. Six years old, frightened, trying to make sense of adults breaking things in public. Elena turned toward the sound, arms already lifting. It was the only part of her body that still knew what to do. Theo ran. Not to her. He ran past her, small feet slapping the marble floor, straight into the skirts of the woman standing near the far wall. Cynthia bent down and gathered him against her chest like she had done it a hundred times before, and Elena stood there with her arms still half raised for a son who had already chosen someone else. No one in the room moved to help her. Three hundred wolves, and not one hand reached out. She lowered her arms slowly. If her hands shook now, in front of all of them, she would never be able to look at any of these people again. And she needed to be able to look at them, at least until she reached the door. "I hope you understand," Scott said, quieter now, like it was a private thing between them and not something the whole room had just watched. "This is better for both of us." Elena looked at her son's face pressed into another woman's neck. She looked at the man who had loved someone else since before he said his vows to her, who had let her spend three years trying to earn something that was never hers to earn in the first place. "Better for you," she said. Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "You've wanted to say that for years, you just needed an audience big enough to make it stick." Something flickered across his face. Not quite anger. Maybe the first honest thing he had shown her all night. "Elena." "Don't call me." She said it soft. Like a door closing, not slamming, because slamming would have given him the satisfaction of thinking she still had enough left in her to be dramatic about it. "I understood you fine. I think I've understood you for a long time, I just didn't want to." She turned before he could answer. She walked the length of the room with three hundred pairs of eyes on her back. Past tables of pack members who had smiled at her that same morning. Past Cynthia, who did not look up from Theo's hair. Past the wide double doors, and out into the cold dark of the McCall grounds, where the pain finally got to be as loud as it actually was. She did not cry until she reached her car. Then she let it come, all of it. The severed bond, the empty space where her son's trust used to live. Three years of trying, dissolved in a single sentence spoken to an audience. She gave herself exactly one night to fall apart. By morning she would need to be someone else. Someone who did not wait by a phone for an apology that would never come. Someone who did not spend one more year of her life trying to earn a seat at a table where she had never actually been wanted. She started the engine. She did not look back at the packhouse windows, still glowing gold behind her, full of people who had just watched her husband hand her back like a debt he had finally paid off. She drove until the wards at the edge of McCall territory prickled against her skin, then faded behind her. For the first time in three years, nobody's expectations sat in the car beside her. Just the dark road ahead, and a version of herself she had not been allowed to be in a very long time. No plan, no pack. Half a tank of gas and a chest full of wreckage. And underneath all of it, something that felt dangerously close to relief. The engine coughed twenty miles later, right where the last of McCall land gave way to trees she did not recognize. It coughed once, and then twice. Then it died. Elena sat there a moment, hands still on the wheel, listening to the silence where the engine used to be. She was not stupid enough to think silence out here meant safety. Pack land had borders for a reason. She had just crossed one without knowing whose land she had crossed into. She tried the key again. Nothing came up, Not even a click. "Come on," she muttered, and hit the wheel with the heel of her hand. Nothing about that helped either, but it felt better than sitting still. She stepped out into air that smelled like pine and wet stone, and something else underneath it. Something that made the hair on her arms rise before her mind caught up to why. A wolf, close, Not her pack's wolf. A stranger's. She turned, slow, and found a pair of headlights cutting through the trees behind her, coming to a stop a few feet from her dead car. The door opened. A man stepped out into the road, tall enough that the headlights threw his shadow all the way to her feet, and for one strange second Elena forgot to be afraid. "Car trouble?" he asked. His voice was low, unhurried, the kind of voice that did not need to be raised to be obeyed. And underneath the pine and the night air, she caught the scent of him properly for the first time. Cedar. And something sharper beneath it. Elena opened her mouth to answer him, and found she did not have a single word ready.
