Chapter 10: Blood and Shadows

Enzo’s large, calloused hand wrapped firmly around Elara’s, guiding her away from the heavy obsidian table of the war room. The suffocating tension of the Castiglione Famiglia's impending threat lingered in the air, but Enzo’s grounding scent of rain, cold steel, and dark cedar washed over her, steadying her trembling nerves. He led her deep into the eastern wing of the Morillo Estate, far away from the heavily fortified guards and mafia business. The marble floors transitioned to ancient, dark wood, and the air grew thick with the sharp, earthy scent of dried sage, crushed wolfsbane, and ancient parchment. Enzo pushed open a heavy, arched wooden door. The room inside was a sprawling apothecary that looked entirely out of place in a modern mafia fortress. Glass vials lined the walls, and a small fire crackled in a stone hearth. Standing beside a silver basin was a female pack elder. She was petite and fragile-looking, draped in a dark shawl. Her hair was stark white, and her eyes were a milky, clouded silver, indicating she was entirely blind. "Don Morillo," the elder greeted, her voice a raspy, ancient whisper that seemed to echo in Elara's very bones. She bowed her head respectfully. "You brought her." "The Castigliones are hunting her, Maeve," Enzo stated, his voice a low, lethal rumble. "They did not attack the southern docks for weapons; it was a distraction. They know something about her bloodline. I need to know exactly what Arthur Vance hid from me." At the mention of her father's name, Elara flinched. But as she stared at the blind elder, a sudden, dizzying wave of déjà vu hit her. Elara took a hesitant step forward, staring at the deep wrinkles mapping Maeve's face. She knew this woman. The realization hit her like a physical blow. She didn't know her from the sprawling Morillo Estate, but from somewhere deep in the foggy, repressed memories of her childhood, long before she was deemed an unshifted "dud" and turned into a punching bag. Where do I know you from? Elara thought frantically. A fractured memory surfaced—a gentle hand smoothing her hair, the smell of sage, a whispered lullaby—but it vanished before she could grasp it. "Come closer, child," Maeve murmured, holding out a frail, weathered hand as if she could see Elara perfectly. Enzo released Elara’s hand, though he stepped forward with her, his massive frame hovering protectively at her shoulder. Elara placed her bandaged hand into the elder's grasp. Maeve’s skin was paper-thin but surprisingly warm. "An unshifted wolf is a tragedy," Maeve whispered, her milky eyes tracking blindly over Elara’s face. "But a bound wolf... that is an abomination. Someone went to great lengths to trap your inner beast, little one. Let us see what they were so terrified of." Maeve picked up an ornate, silver-tipped dagger from the table. Before Elara could pull away, the elder quickly pricked the tip of Elara’s index finger. A single drop of deep crimson blood welled up to the surface. Maeve guided Elara’s hand over the silver basin, which was filled with a clear, shimmering liquid. "If you are truly just a dud, the water will remain clear," Maeve explained. "If your wolf was bound by dark magic, the water will reveal the truth of your bloodline." The single drop of blood fell from Elara’s finger, hitting the surface of the water with a soft plink. For a second, nothing happened. Then, the water began to violently boil. The single drop of Elara's blood hit the clear liquid in the silver basin. For an agonizing second, the room was dead silent. Then, the water began to violently boil. Elara gasped, shrinking back into the solid wall of Enzo's chest. The heavy, dominant scent of rain, cold steel, and dark cedar rolled off him as his large arms instinctively wrapped around her waist, shielding her. The boiling water didn't turn black. Instead, a blinding, luminescent gold exploded through the basin, casting a warm, brilliant light against the dark stone walls of the apothecary. It glowed like liquid sunshine, swirling with an ancient, heavy power that made the air in the room actually hum with energy. Maeve, the blind elder, let out a shaky, terrified breath and immediately dropped to her knees, bowing her head in absolute reverence. "Gold," Maeve whispered, her raspy voice trembling. "It is not a shadow-line. It is the Sun-Wolf. The first bloodline." Enzo's grip tightened possessively on Elara. As the head of the Morillo Syndicate, he was a pureblood Lycan, a status that made him vastly larger, faster, and far more lethal than standard shifters. But even his powerful, apex-predator inner beast rumbled in awe at the sheer magnitude of the golden light. "What does that mean?" Elara choked out, her bandaged hands gripping Enzo's forearms. "I'm a dud. I'm just an unshifted dud." "You were never a dud, child," Maeve said, slowly rising to her feet. "The Sun-Wolf bloodline is pure royalty. It is the rarest, most powerful lineage in existence, thought to be extinct for centuries. Your father, Arthur Vance, was a weak-willed Alpha who drove his failing pack into massive debt. He could never have produced an heir like you. He is not your true blood." The words hit Elara like a physical blow. The impoverished pack, the abuse, the years of scrubbing floors while Arthur Vance used her as a punching bag for his mounting frustrations—it was all built on a massive lie. "Someone knew exactly what you were," Enzo growled, his voice a lethal, vibrating rumble. "Someone incredibly powerful bound your wolf with dark magic and hid you in the weakest pack they could find, using Arthur as a pathetic smokescreen." Elara stared at the glowing golden water. She wasn't just collateral offered to pay off millions in underground gambling debts. She wasn't just a maid. She was a hunted queen, and the entire shifter underworld was about to go to war over her.
