Chapter 9: The Seat at the Table

885 Words
The morning sun streamed through the heavily fortified windows of the Morillo Estate. Elara, dressed in a soft, cream-colored sweater that safely concealed her fading bruises, walked down the grand mahogany hallway. She felt incredibly small beside the towering, lethal presence of Don Lorenzo Morillo. Enzo placed a warm, heavy hand on the small of her back, guiding her through a set of imposing double doors and into the Syndicate's war room. The room fell dead silent. Around a massive obsidian table sat the most dangerous pureblood Lycans in the city. Matteo Rossi, Enzo's smooth-talking Underboss, stood immediately, respectfully bowing his head. The others followed suit, their eyes darting curiously to the unshifted "dud" standing beside their ruthless leader. Enzo pulled out the high-backed leather chair directly to the right of his own—the seat reserved strictly for a Don's equal. He gently guided Elara to sit. "Gentlemen," Enzo's voice was a low, commanding rumble that demanded absolute submission. "You all know the Vance pack debt has been burned. But let me be entirely clear about who sits before you. Elara is not collateral. She is my fated mate. You will bleed for her, you will die for her, and you will address her as your Queen." A stunned murmur rippled through the inner circle. A pureblood Don claiming an unshifted wolf was unheard of. Matteo cleared his throat, his face grim. "We would die for her, Don. But it seems we aren't the only ones who know her value." Matteo slid a blood-stained manila folder across the obsidian glass. It was the intel recovered from the Castiglione lieutenant Enzo had ruthlessly interrogated and executed at the docks. Enzo flipped it open, his jaw clenching as his eyes flashed a feral silver. Elara leaned over to look. Inside wasn't a map of Morillo territory. It was a surveillance photo of her scrubbing the Vance packhouse floors. "The Castiglione Famiglia didn't hit the southern docks for weapons," Matteo stated darkly. "It was a distraction. They know what her bloodline actually is, Don. They are coming for her." Here is Part 2 of Chapter 9, picking up exactly from that chilling cliffhanger. This half focuses on Elara’s confusion about her own identity and Enzo’s ruthless, protective response to the Castiglione threat. Chapter 9: The Seat at the Table (Part 2) Elara stared down at the glossy surveillance photograph resting on the cold obsidian glass. It was undeniably her. She was wearing her oversized, ragged t-shirt, kneeling on the cracked hardwood floors of the Vance packhouse with a scrub brush in hand. A cold spike of dread twisted in her stomach. The Castiglione Famiglia, the Morillos' primary rival syndicate, had been watching her. They had been hunting her even before her father sold her. "I don't understand," Elara whispered, her voice trembling in the dead silence of the war room. She looked up, her dark eyes darting between the massive, scarred Lycans seated around the table. "Why would they care about me? I'm unshifted. I'm just a dud." Matteo Rossi, Enzo’s smooth-talking Underboss, let out a heavy sigh, his expression grim. "With all due respect, Queen... the Castigliones don't send a dozen heavily armed men to die at our southern docks for a human maid. They didn't even try to steal the weapons shipment. They just wanted us looking the wrong way while they moved in on you." The air in the room suddenly grew so heavy it was difficult to breathe. The suffocating scent of rain, cold steel, and dark cedar rolled off Don Lorenzo in suffocating waves. Enzo reached out, his large, calloused hand gripping Elara’s chair and pulling it inches closer to his own side. It was a fiercely possessive gesture, a physical declaration that she belonged to him. His dark eyes swept over his inner circle, his jaw clamped so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. "If the Castiglione Famiglia knows her true bloodline, it means there is a leak," Enzo growled, his voice a low, lethal rumble that demanded absolute submission. "Arthur Vance is a weak-willed, gambling-addicted Alpha. He is too stupid to know what he actually possessed, let alone orchestrate a cover-up of this magnitude. Someone else masked her scent. Someone else bound her wolf." Elara’s breath hitched. Bound her wolf? For twenty-one years, she had been beaten and treated as a worthless anomaly because she had never shifted. The idea that her inner beast hadn't been absent, but intentionally trapped by some dark magic, made her head spin. "We need to know exactly what we are dealing with, Don," Matteo stated, leaning forward. "If she shifts, and she is what the Castiglione rumors claim..." "She will be protected," Enzo interrupted, his voice cracking like a whip. He stood up, his massive frame towering over the war table. "Matteo, lock down the estate. Double the perimeter guard and ground all southern shipments. Nobody enters or leaves Morillo territory without my blood-seal." "Yes, Don," Matteo said, immediately rising to carry out the order. Enzo turned his attention back to Elara. The terrifying, icy Don of the underworld softened the moment he looked down at her. He offered his hand. "Come with me, little bird," Enzo murmured gently. "It is time we figure out exactly what your father kept hidden from you."
