Chapter 6: The Emerald Vision

1376 Words
The sprawling hallways of the Morillo Estate were a dizzying maze of dark mahogany, antique armor, and priceless oil paintings, but Elara barely registered any of it. Even with the soft emerald silk brushing gently against her ankles, her heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against her ribs. She was escorted by the two seamstresses down a grand, sweeping staircase and toward a massive set of wrought-iron double doors. Beyond them lay the estate’s private conservatory. "He is just inside, Miss," Maria whispered, offering a reassuring smile before she and Sofia politely bowed and retreated back into the shadows of the hall. Elara took a deep, shaky breath, her bandaged hands pressing flat against the heavy iron handles. She pushed the doors open. The conservatory was breathtaking. It was a massive, glass-domed sanctuary overflowing with lush, exotic ferns, blooming white orchids, and the soothing sound of a marble water fountain trickling in the center. The late morning sunlight poured through the glass ceiling, catching the humid mist in the air. The smell of damp earth and sweet flowers waged a beautiful war against the heavy, dominant scent of dark cedar and rain that saturated the room. Standing on the far side of the fountain, with his broad back to her, was Don Lorenzo Morillo. He had shed his blood-splattered suit from the night before and was now wearing a crisp, black dress shirt. The sleeves were rolled up past his elbows, exposing thick forearms corded with muscle and dusted with dark, intricate syndicate ink. He was quietly reviewing a stack of syndication files resting on a glass table. At the soft click of the iron doors closing behind her, Enzo didn't turn around. "Leave the reports on the table, Matteo. I will review the Castiglione movements shortly," he ordered, his voice clipped, cold, and strictly business. "It's... it's not Matteo," Elara said, her voice small and trembling in the massive space. Enzo froze. The shift in his posture was instantaneous. Slowly, the Lycan Don turned around. The moment his dark eyes landed on her, the entire room seemed to lose its gravity. The syndicate files slipped from his massive hand, scattering uselessly across the glass table and falling to the marble floor, but he didn't even blink. He went completely, rigidly still, looking as if the air had just been violently punched from his lungs. Elara shifted nervously under his heavy gaze, her hands coming up to clutch the emerald silk at her waist. "Is it... is it too much? The ladies said you wanted me dressed properly, but I can go change if—" "Do not move," Enzo breathed, his voice thick and suddenly incredibly rough. He closed the distance between them with a slow, deliberate grace, stalking toward her like a massive apex predator completely mesmerized by its focus. The icy, unfeeling mask of the mafia boss completely shattered, leaving behind a raw, naked awe that made Elara’s breath catch in her throat. As he stepped into the sunlight streaming through the dome, his irises bled rapidly from bottomless brown into that terrifying, luminescent silver. Elara’s stomach fluttered wildly. Because she had never shifted, she knew nothing of shifter lore or the sacred signs of the mate bond. To her, that glowing silver meant only one thing: raw, consuming, terrifying human desire. He was looking at her the way a starving man looks at a feast. Enzo stopped mere inches from her. He reached out, his bare, calloused hand trembling slightly as his knuckles gently traced the line of her jaw, incredibly careful to avoid her fading bruise. The heat rolling off his body was magnetic. "You are stunning," Enzo murmured, the Alpha command in his voice entirely replaced by a quiet reverence. "I knew there was beauty hidden beneath the ashes of your old life, little bird. But I did not realize I was bringing a queen into my home." Elara’s cheeks burned crimson at his words. No one had ever spoken to her with such reverence. For a fleeting, heart-stopping second, she actually believed him. She leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut as his thumb brushed her skin. BANG. The heavy wrought-iron doors of the conservatory flew open with a violent crash, shattering the delicate, heated bubble between them. Elara gasped, jumping backward. Matteo stormed into the room. The Underboss wasn't carrying a breakfast tray this time; he had a sleek black tablet gripped tightly in one hand, and his other rested instinctively on the heavy firearm holstered at his hip. His face was pale, his jaw set in a rigid line of barely contained fury. "Don Morillo," Matteo barked, his voice echoing off the glass dome. "We have a critical situation. The Castigliones just hit the southern docks." The transformation was instantaneous and terrifying. The luminescent silver in Enzo’s eyes vanished, swallowed instantly by a bottomless, dead-eyed brown. The gentle, reverent man who had just called her a queen disappeared. In his place stood the apex predator of the underworld. The temperature in the conservatory seemed to plummet ten degrees, the smell of ozone, gunpowder, and dark cedar completely suffocating the sweet scent of the orchids. Enzo didn't step away from Elara. Instead, he moved with blinding Lycan speed, shifting his massive frame to stand squarely in front of her. He became an impenetrable wall of muscle and tailored silk, completely shielding her from Matteo and the open doorway. "Casualties?" Enzo demanded, his voice a low, lethal rumble that vibrated through the marble floorboards. "Four of our men are down," Matteo reported grimly. "They are pushing toward the warehouse. They want the weapons shipment, and they brought silver-laced artillery." Enzo’s jaw clenched so tightly it looked carved from granite. He reached back, his large hand blindly finding Elara’s arm and gripping it firmly, but carefully. "Dante! Luca!" Enzo roared. Within seconds, two massive, heavily armed guards materialized from the hallway, rushing into the conservatory. They were nearly as large as Enzo, their eyes glowing with the feral, golden intensity of shifted wolves ready for war. They bowed their heads instantly. "Take her to the vault," Enzo commanded. "You are her shadows now. If anyone outside of this room so much as looks at her, you have my authorization to execute them on sight." "Yes, Don," the guards replied in perfect unison. Enzo turned back to Elara. His expression was completely unreadable, a mask of cold mafia calculation, but his thumb briefly, gently stroked the inside of her wrist before he let go. "Go with them, Elara. You will be safe." She didn't have time to argue. Dante and Luca flanked her seamlessly, guiding her out of the conservatory and down a hidden, winding staircase behind the main library. They descended deep into the bedrock of the estate. Elara expected a dark, damp dungeon—the kind her father used to lock rogues in. Instead, the guards stopped in front of a massive, circular steel bank vault door. Dante punched a complicated fifty-digit code into the keypad, and the heavy locks disengaged with a series of deafening, echoing clicks. As the door swung open, Elara blinked in shock. The safe room was essentially a five-star subterranean penthouse. The walls were lined with tufted cream leather to soundproof the space. There was a massive, plush king-sized bed, a fully stocked kitchenette with marble counters, a wall of flat-screen monitors currently displaying nothing but the Morillo family crest, and a massive mahogany bookshelf. It was bathed in warm, artificial sunlight, making it feel less like a bunker and more like a luxury suite. "Make yourself comfortable, Miss Elara," Luca said respectfully, stepping back into the corridor. "We will be standing right outside this door. Nothing gets past us." Elara stepped inside, the soft emerald silk of her dress swishing against the plush carpet. She turned back just as Dante grabbed the heavy handle of the vault. "Wait," she breathed, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Is he going to be okay?" Dante paused, a dark, predatory smirk crossing his scarred face. "The Don is not the one in danger, Miss. The Castigliones are." With a heavy, metallic slam, the vault door sealed shut, locking Elara safely inside her beautiful, impenetrable cage.
