Chapter 5: Silk and Scars

1390 Words
Elara scraped the last crumb of the pastry from the silver tray, her bandaged fingers trembling slightly as the final piece melted on her tongue. For the first time in her twenty-one years of existence, her stomach felt completely, wonderfully full. It wasn't the hollow, aching emptiness she was used to, nor was it the sickening cramp of eating stale scraps scavenged from the packhouse kitchen after midnight. It was a heavy, grounding warmth. She sat back against the massive mahogany headboard, her breathing finally slowing to a normal, steady rhythm. The suffocating silence of the room settled around her. In the Vance pack, silence was never safe. Silence meant her father was sleeping off a drunken rage, and any wrong move—a creaking floorboard, a dropped rag—would wake the beast. Enzo stood up from the edge of the mattress. He moved with a lethal, fluid grace that belied his massive size. He didn't hover. He didn't demand a thank you or gloat over his generosity. He simply sensed that her frayed nerves needed space to decompress. "There is an en-suite bathroom through those double doors," Enzo said, his deep voice smooth, a rumbling baritone that vibrated right through the heavy air. "Take a shower. Wash the packhouse off of you. I have sent for my personal seamstresses; they will arrive shortly to properly dress you." Before Elara could anxiously ask what he meant—what kind of dress a mafia Don expected a dud to wear—Enzo turned. He strode out of the room without a backward glance, the heavy oak doors clicking firmly, decisively shut behind him. Alone. She was completely alone in the massive, quiet suite. Elara slowly pushed the dark silk sheets aside. Her legs trembled violently as her bare feet touched the plush, cream-colored rug. It was so thick it swallowed her toes, a stark contrast to the splintering, freezing hardwood floors she had scrubbed on her hands and knees just hours ago. She forced herself to walk, putting one foot in front of the other, toward the towering double doors Enzo had pointed out. She pushed them open and stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. The bathroom was larger than her entire childhood bedroom, perhaps even larger than the packhouse living room. It was a staggering masterpiece of dark, veined marble, gleaming gold fixtures, and soft, recessed lighting that cast a warm glow over everything. A massive, claw-foot soaking tub sat in the center of the room, but it was the glass-enclosed walk-in shower that drew her eye. It looked like a rainfall sanctuary, large enough to fit half a dozen people. Moving like a sleepwalker, she crossed the heated marble floor. Her hands shook as she reached out to turn the heavy golden knobs. The water didn't sputter or cough rust like the pipes back home; it instantly cascaded down in a thick, steaming torrent. She stripped off the oversized black t-shirt, shivering as the cool air hit her bruised skin. Stepping under the rainfall showerhead, she gasped as the scalding, perfect heat enveloped her. Elara leaned her forehead against the cool glass wall, closing her eyes as the water rushed over her. She stood there for a long time, simply letting the steam fill her lungs. She watched the dirt, the grime, and the soapy residue of her miserable old life swirl down the gold-rimmed drain. She reached for a crystal bottle on the built-in shelf, dispensing a thick, pearlescent body wash. As she scrubbed her skin, the rich, intoxicating scent of vanilla and warm sandalwood filled the enclosure. She scrubbed until her skin turned pink, desperate to completely mask the damp, miserable scent of the Vance pack. She washed away the smell of cheap bourbon, the copper tang of fear, and the stale dust of the floorboards. Yet, as she rinsed her hair, her fingers brushed against the tender, yellowish bruise on her jawline. A stark reminder. She might be standing in a golden cage, smelling of vanilla and washing with liquid silk, but she was still collateral. She was still a prisoner of the Morillo Syndicate. The rules had changed, but she was still entirely at the mercy of the Lycan Don. The water slowed to a trickle as Elara finally pushed the heavy golden handle, shutting off the downpour. She stepped out of the glass enclosure and wrapped herself in a towel that felt softer than a cloud. Wiping a circle of condensation from the massive bathroom mirror, she stared at her damp face. Her cheeks were flushed from the heat, and her dark hair was plastered against her neck, but the haunted, hollow look in her eyes had softened just a fraction. A soft, hesitant knock echoed from the bedroom, pulling her out of her thoughts. Elara tensed instinctively. She clutched the plush towel tightly to her chest and cracked the heavy bathroom door open, peeking out into the suite. Standing in the center of the room were two older women. They were dressed in immaculate, charcoal-gray uniforms, holding measuring tapes and carrying several black velvet garment bags. Unlike the snarling enforcers of the Vance pack, these women radiated a quiet, grandmotherly warmth, but their posture remained rigidly respectful. "Pardon the intrusion, Miss Elara," the taller woman said, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "I am Maria, and this is Sofia. The Don requested we bring you something suitable for your first day at the estate." Elara cautiously stepped out of the bathroom, her bare feet sinking into the rug. "He sent for you just to dress me?" "The Don was very specific about what he wanted for you," Maria murmured gently, moving toward the bed and laying the largest velvet bag on the mattress. "May we?" Elara gave a small, hesitant nod. Sofia unzipped the bag, carefully parting the dark velvet. Elara’s breath caught in her throat. It wasn't just a dress; it was a masterpiece. It was a long, flowing gown made of deep, emerald-green silk—a color so rich it looked like a crushed jewel. It was completely unlike the tight, revealing scraps of clothing the lower syndicates forced their cocktail waitresses to wear. This gown featured a high, elegant neckline and long, sweeping bell sleeves. As Elara stared at it, a heavy lump formed in her throat. She realized instantly why Enzo had chosen this exact design. The high collar and the long, flowing sleeves would completely cover the fading bruises on her collarbones, the defensive scratches on her forearms, and the deep, ugly scars left by her father’s rage. The Lycan Don wasn't just clothing her; he was returning her dignity. He was giving her armor. "Let us assist you, Miss," Sofia said softly, holding out the delicate fabric. Elara dropped the towel and allowed the women to dress her. The silk slid over her skin like cool water, unimaginably soft and weightless. The gown hugged her narrow waist perfectly before flaring out, flowing like liquid emeralds down to her ankles. Maria guided her to a vanity chair, gently towel-drying her dark hair before brushing it out until it fell in soft, heavy waves down her back. "You have lovely hair, Miss," Maria noted, pinning a small section back with a delicate gold clip to keep it out of her eyes. "There. Perfection." Elara stood up and turned to face the floor-to-ceiling mirror positioned near the armoire. She gasped, taking a stumbling step back. The woman staring back at her was a stranger. The emerald silk perfectly contrasted her dark hair and brought out a hidden warmth in her pale complexion. With her bruises hidden and her hair shining, she didn't look like a dud. She didn't look like a terrified maid or a broken punching bag waiting for the next blow. She stood a little taller, her shoulders naturally pulling back as the heavy silk swept around her feet. She looked elegant. She looked untouched. For the very first time in her life, she looked like she actually belonged in a world of power and wealth. She looked like mafia royalty. Maria stepped forward, offering a soft, knowing smile as she gently touched Elara’s shoulder. "The Don is waiting for you in the conservatory, Miss Elara. I believe he will be very pleased."
