Chapter 3: The Golden Cage

953 Words
The adrenaline that had kept Elara’s heart hammering against her ribs finally ran out. Sitting in the soundproof cabin of the mafia SUV, the overwhelming scent of Enzo’s cedar and rain enveloped her. The sheer terror of the night, combined with the impossible heat radiating from the Lycan Don, completely short-circuited her exhausted brain. The world tilted violently, the edges of her vision bled to black, and she slumped forward, fainting dead away into the Don's lap. When she finally forced her eyes open again, the heavy rumble of the SUV was gone. Elara gasped, sitting bolt upright. She was in the center of a massive, opulent bed draped in dark, heavy silk sheets. The room was the size of her entire packhouse floor, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked a sprawling, heavily fortified stone courtyard. She glanced down and her breath hitched. Her worn, dirty clothes had been replaced by an oversized, impossibly soft black t-shirt. Panic spiked fiercely in her chest until she looked down at her hands. The raw blisters and scrub-brush cuts on her palms had been carefully cleaned, treated with a soothing salve, and wrapped in pristine white bandages. "The estate doctor tended to you while you slept," a deep, quiet voice resonated from the corner of the room. Elara flinched, pulling the silk sheets tightly up to her chin. Enzo sat in a high-backed leather armchair in the shadows, watching her with unreadable, dark eyes. He had shed his suit jacket, the holstered firearm strapped over his broad chest a stark, terrifying reminder of exactly who had taken her. "Where am I?" Elara whispered, her voice shaking. "The Morillo Estate," Enzo replied smoothly, stepping out of the shadows and slowly approaching the bed. "The most secure fortress in the shifter world. You are in my personal wing, Elara. No one enters these halls without my direct command." Elara stared at the Don, her mind spinning as his words echoed in the massive, quiet room. My personal wing. Panic, sharp and familiar, clawed at her throat. She gripped the heavy silk sheets tighter, her knuckles turning white. This was wrong. All of this was wrong. The plush mattress, the treated wounds on her hands, the terrifying, untouchable mafia boss standing before her like a guard dog rather than an executioner. "No," Elara choked out, shaking her head frantically. She scrambled backward until her spine hit the carved mahogany headboard. "No, there’s been a mistake. You don't understand." Enzo stopped his approach. His broad shoulders went perfectly still. "Explain the mistake to me, Elara." "I am collateral," she pleaded, her voice cracking as the humiliating truth spilled out of her. "I'm a dud. I don't belong in a bed like this. I need to be in the servants' quarters. If I don't start working, the debt—" "The debt is burned," Enzo interrupted, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "It's never burned!" Elara cried, tears of pure terror finally spilling over her lashes. "It's never just gone! For six years, my father’s gambling debts have been my life. When he couldn't pay the interest to the lower syndicates, he rented me out to their packhouses to scrub their floors until my knees bled. When he lost at the tables, I was the one who had to serve drinks to the men he owed, smiling while they put their hands on me, terrified that if I dropped a glass, he would beat me until I couldn't stand!" She pulled her knees to her chest, making herself as small as possible. The phantom sting of her father's backhand burned on her jaw. "I am a maid," she whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the words. "I am a punching bag. I am whatever pays off Arthur Vance's sickness. So please, Don Morillo. Just put me in the kitchens. Put me in the laundry. I know how to disappear. I promise I'll work hard. Just... please don't play games with me." A suffocating, deadly silence fell over the bedroom. The air grew so heavy it felt difficult to breathe. When Elara finally found the courage to look up, her breath hitched. Enzo wasn't just standing there; he was vibrating. His hands were curled into fists at his sides so tightly that the leather of his gloves creaked. The muscles in his neck strained, and the dark, bottomless brown of his eyes had completely vanished, replaced by a blinding, feral silver. The beast beneath his skin was thrashing, driven into a violent, bloodthirsty frenzy by the confession of his mate's torture. He moved so fast she didn't even see him cross the room. Suddenly, Enzo was kneeling on the edge of the mattress. Elara flinched hard, squeezing her eyes shut, waiting for the blow. Instead, two massive hands gently framed her face. His thumbs brushed away the tears tracking down her cheeks. The touch was agonizingly tender, completely contrasting the lethal, murderous aura radiating from his body. "Look at me," Enzo commanded softly. It wasn't an Alpha order; it was a plea. Elara slowly opened her eyes, meeting that glowing silver gaze. "You are not a maid," Enzo vowed, his voice thick with a guttural, barely restrained snarl. "You are not a punching bag. And you will never scrub a floor again for as long as you live. Those men who put their hands on you? I will find their names, and I will drown them in their own blood." He leaned in closer, his forehead resting lightly against hers. "This wing is yours. This estate is yours. And if you ask for the servants' quarters again, I will burn them to the ground just to prove a point."
