Fiona
Rousing from a dead sleep, I heard voices. So soothing, it was my mate. Taking in a deep breath I inhaled his scent that enveloped my body. Not even cracking my eyes, I stretched my arms reaching high above my head. I couldn’t help but remember doing that when I was little, my mother laughing at me, smiling. Happy, that was the emotion, we were happy. I felt my lips pull downward at the memory as a pain in my chest surfaced. Pushing down the feeling I felt arms band around my body helping me sit up. “mmm”, my voice vibrated through my body as I opened my eyes, blinking to adjust to the light.
The first thing I saw was Adam, I smiled at him brightly leaning backwards. Meeting a hard warm surface, I tilted my head upwards meeting the green eyes of my mate. “How do you feel Flicka?” I couldn’t work out why he kept calling me that, surely he knew my name. Shoving the thought from my head I looked around the room before my gaze snagged on Adam’s pocket the blue packet corner clearly showing. Noticing my attention Adam couldn’t help but laugh pulling the M&M’s out ripping the top of the bag before handing them to me.
Snatching the bag stronger then I had intended, I looked into the bag pulling out a blue one. Placing it speedily into my mouth I moaned out in surrender. My mates hand reached towards the bag, before I could even control myself a growl erupted from my throat as I instinctively held the bag closer to my chest. Adam burst into laughter as I looked up apologetically at my mate with a tiny voice, “mine.”
His golden flecked eyes transitioned back to green as he held me closer sighing in resignation. “How are you feeling?”
Realizing he had already asked me this question I thought about it for a moment trying to move all my body parts one by one checking for pain. Relaxing into his body I used my newly recalled memories of happiness, “I feel.. happy.” God that felt like a lot of words.
Adam’s mouth dropped open, “That was more then I think you have spoken since you have been here. God if I knew all I needed was Tristen to get you to talk, I would have called him last night.”
His name, I had heard it a few times now. Maybe this was a good time to clear up the name situation. I turned my body to face my mate, his eyes widened with expectation. “Tris…ten, Tristen.” A smile reaching his eyes covered his face. Pointing to my chest, “I.. am.. Fiona, call me.. Fee.” Not messing up any words I was super proud of myself.
“You are my Flicka.” His words sounded between us as I furrowed my eyebrows not understanding why he was changing my name.
Leaning down he placed a peck on my cheek before whispering in my ear, “Flicka means beautiful girl.” I could feel my body heat up in reaction as his lips turned upwards. Turning back around I leaned into his embrace. My tummy gurgled loudly twisting uncomfortably signally my hunger. “You hungry Flicka? Adam go get something for her.” Adam jumped up from the bed in a heart beat heading out of the room.
“Fee tell me about yourself?” Turning back around I moved away from his body to stare at his face. Autumn was screaming in my head to return to where I was. Ignoring her, I furrowed my brows trying to minimise the headache she was giving me. Tristen must have misunderstood as within seconds he was telling me of himself. “Well I am Tristen, Alpha of Starlight pack. I am 23 years old and have one sister, Rebecca. Our parents died when we were young.”
After a long silence, taking time to think of how to place the words together, “Mum and dad died, I don’t know how old I am. Been with wolves since I shifted, long time ago.” I smiled again proud of myself, it had been so long since I had spoken. It took longer for me to get out a sentence, but he appeared patient, more than happy to wait actually.
I knew I would get the talking thing down quickly. Not so much picking what to say, but using my voice. I could already feel my throat growing dry and sore.
His eye widened, “since you were 14 years old. You were with the wolves since you were 14?” I could not help but laugh, I do not think it would be a good idea to tell him I shifted early. Though he was my mate, he would find out eventually. Before I could respond, Adam knocked on the door before entering.
He held a plate holding a sandwich. Once again when he came closer the plate extended in his hand, I could not help but snatch it pulling it close to my body. Tristen’s hand fell to my head as a chuckle left him, “you can eat as much as you like, we will not run out of food Flicka.”
I tried to eat slower, but old habits die hard as I shoved the food in my mouth devouring it quickly as possible. At least I didn’t choke this time. Laying back on the bed I brought my hands to my tummy, “hurts.” Another chuckle left my mate.
“Well you need to slow down little one, you ate too much too quickly.” Adam exchanged knowing glances with my mate as their eyes glazed slightly, just like mum and dads used to when they spoke in peoples heads in the pack. What was it called again, thinking so hard I didn’t realize when my mate was back to himself. His hand grazed my arm, sending sparks of life through my body. “Fee do you remember before you were with the wolves? I could help you try to find your family?”
*********
Flashing back, I remembered Flower was standing outside crying. I sprinted towards my best friend as a snarling wolf approached her. I ran straight into her body as a pain sliced through my back. My mum was fighting behind me in her wolf form. I grabbed Flower’s arm from the floor and pushed her towards the forest with what little strength I had. “Run Flower. Run and don’t stop.”
She stayed on the floor next to me unmoving, her little body shuddering in the snow. I cried out in pain trying to rise off the floor unsuccessfully. Her hand timidly shaking, she reached for my back. Pulling her hand away it was covered in blood, her face painted with horror. “Run,” I screamed at her again, “GO NOW!” Obeying I watched as she turned and darted into the forest as my mothers human hands softly grabbed me from the floor.
Taking off she ran towards our house. I started shaking my head trying to dislodge the thoughts not wanting to relive her death again. An my flower, I sent her to her death. She would have been lost and alone in the woods, one of the wolves probably tracked her down. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut, wanting to forget.
