PIECES OF A PROMISE
PIECES OF A PROMISE — Episode 1: The Return
Ama stood at the edge of the school courtyard, pretending to read the notice board even though she had already memorized every line on it. Her mind wasn’t on the paper. It was on one thing—well, one person.
Kweku.
It had been two years since he left town without saying goodbye, chasing an opportunity that everyone said was too big to ignore. Ama had convinced herself she had moved on. But the truth? The moment she heard he was coming back for his internship, her heart had started beating like it remembered something she had tried hard to forget.
A soft breeze passed, brushing her hair across her face. She sighed, whispering to herself,
“Don’t overthink. You’re fine. You’re okay.”
She wasn’t.
Just then, she heard footsteps behind her. Slow. Familiar. She didn’t turn around, but something inside her shifted—like a memory stepping out of the dark.
“Ama?”
She froze.
That voice. Calm. Deep. Still the same.
She turned slowly, and there he was—Kweku. Taller, more confident, but carrying the same gentle eyes she used to trust with everything.
He smiled, a little nervous. “You look surprised.”
Ama crossed her arms to hide the shaking in her hands. “Well, people don’t usually disappear and then appear like they never left.”
Kweku looked down for a moment, his face softening. “I know. And I’m sorry. I didn’t handle things right.” He paused. “I owe you an explanation.”
Ama didn’t say anything. She didn’t trust her voice. Seeing him again felt like someone reopening a book she wasn’t ready to read.
Kweku shifted his backpack. “I came back because… I want to fix things. If you’ll let me.”
Ama blinked, caught between anger, hope, and confusion. The promise he broke still stung, even after all this time.
Before she could answer, a group of students walked by, calling her name. Kweku stepped back politely, giving her space.
“I’ll see you around,” he said quietly.
He walked away, and Ama watched him, her heart refusing to decide whether to stay cold or start melting again.
She whispered to herself,
“Why now, Kweku? Why now, when I finally put the pieces back together?”
But deep inside, she knew the truth:
Some pieces never really fit without the one who broke them.
