CHAPTER FOUR
Kane's nostrils flared as the scent of lilacs and strawberries hit him with full force. His mate. His entire body stiffened.
He was on his feet in an instant.
He didn't need anyone to say a word; he already knew who was behind the door. His wolf had gone silent, like a hunter in waiting, as the familiar scent kept drifting in.
"She's here," he said, almost like a growl, his voice dark and possessive. His eyes flickered gold as his wolf surged forward, clawing at the surface.
Liam's eyes widened, and he turned sharply towards the door, "Annalise!"
Annalise froze just beyond the threshold, her hands trembling by her sides. She hadn't meant to make a sound; it slipped out when she heard Torrent speak of a bloodbath, and her dreams flashed before her eyes.
She remembered how she was standing in the middle of her dead body with Kane just a few feet away, coated in blood, and she wondered if that part of her dream was about to unfold.
Deep down, she knew it would if her father tried to stop Kane from leaving with her.
She could feel the heat of his presence pressing against her skin even from the other side of the room. She could hear her heartbeat so fast, like it could pop out of her chest at any second.
Kane's boots echoed against the polished floor as he took a slow, deliberate step forward. His gaze was locked on the door.
Annalise felt a sort of calm settle over her. For the first time in her life, someone was actually seeing her, actually wanted her.
She has been so scared of finding her mate, for fear that he'll be worse than her father, or he'll even ignore her the way her brother does.
But what she didn't expect was him fighting for her, for his claim over her. She hoped he wasn't just seeing weakness and disappointment in her; she hoped he was seeing the good part of her, if she had any left in her.
Her father -Liam, quickly walked towards her, blocking her from Kane's line of view. "You can't take her Alpha, she'll be totally useless to you and a waste. We have a better offer for you, like we said earlier, Rhea would be a better match for you."
He said firmly, though there was a slight tremble in his voice now, the weight of Kane's power pressing in from all sides.
"I'm not going to repeat myself, Liam, we've been over this," Kane replied, voice low and edged with threat. His wolf was practically vibrating beneath his skin now, pacing and snarling; it was ready to tear through anyone who stood in their way.
But Kane held it back.
From behind Liam, Annalise finally stepped into view, and time seemed to stop as she locked eyes with Kane. He slowly started moving towards her like he was in a trance.
"Mate.. mine," he whispered, but Annalise heard him loud and clear, and her whole body shuddered. "f**k, could his voice be anymore sexier?" her wolf whispered in her head. She shifted her wolf to the back of her mind and blocked their connection; she didn't need any distraction from her wolf at this point.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She couldn't speak. Couldn't breathe, couldn't move. The dreams, the blood, the warning signs, they all screamed to her to run, but she felt weirdly safe being around Kane.
Liam didn't want to let Annalise go because he knew how important she would be to the pack, with her newfound power.
They've not yet been able to test her, to know how powerful she was; he couldn't just let Kane leave with someone who could turn out to be their greatest asset.
And they couldn't trust Annalise not to rebel against them the moment she gets a chance.
“I think we should just let them go with her dad; we can't afford Alpha Kane's wrath on our Kingdom just because of her.”
James whispered to his father.
It was very obvious he was starting to get scared of the power wafting out of Kane at that moment.
“Maybe we could call in my daughter, she's good with words, and she could push Kane to change his mind, once he sees how powerful she is. I don't think he'll want to settle for this weakling,” Micha said, his face scrunching up in disgust, which was directed at Annalise.
“There's no need to prolong this, Micah, you don't want this pack to end up on his bad side,” James whispered again, his voice sounding urgent.
“Go and pack your things, Anna, we're leaving now, and anyone who thinks they can stop me should try.”
Kane looked at Liam, James, and Micah, daring them to stop him.
Liam took a step forward, like he wanted to stop Anna, but Kane burst out, finally losing his patience.
“Take one more step forward and I'll send your headless body back to your pack, with your head in a box beside it.”
“And he's not joking about it,” Lance added, his voice coming out as a threat.
Everyone froze. Anna could feel the tension in the air; no one had ever stood up for her or even faced her father because of her.
She felt seen, like the saviour she had been waiting for all her life, was finally here.
She held Kane back as he started walking towards Liam in slow steps, her dream flashing before her eyes again.
“Don't do it.” She whispered in a small voice, but Kane still caught on to what she meant.
“It won't end well. I'll go with you; no one here cares about me anyway, and I don't think anyone will miss me when I leave.”
Kane nodded his head and turned to leave with her, Lance and Torrent walking beside her.
They walked out of the pack house, towards their car, which was parked outside. And people started coming out to see what was going on.
Surprise was written all over their faces as they watched Kane leave with Annalise.
Rhea, from the side, suddenly piped up. “This is ridiculous! She doesn’t even know how to fight, she’s not trained, she’s… she’s nothing.”
Annalise flinched. That one word always hits the hardest. Nothing.
But Kane didn’t even glance at Rhea.
His eyes never left her.
And when he spoke, his voice was steel wrapped in velvet. “She’s everything.”
Annalise’s breath caught in her throat.
The way he said it—like it was a fact written in stone, not up for debate—made something deep inside her crack.
No one had ever fought for her. No one had ever looked at her like they could see past the scars her father left on her heart. But Kane’s gaze was unwavering, as if he saw every shattered piece of her and still decided she was worth keeping.
Rhea’s face twisted in outrage, but before she could speak again, Kane’s voice dropped even lower.
“I’d advise you to stop talking before I forget my patience entirely.”
Rhea stumbled back, suddenly finding the ground far more interesting than his golden, burning eyes.
Lance opened the car door for Annalise, and she hesitated for just a moment, her gaze flicking over the crowd that had gathered.
Some whispered. Some smirked. Some looked almost relieved she was leaving.
Not one of them stepped forward to stop her.
Not one of them said goodbye.
She swallowed the lump in her throat and slid into the car. Kane followed, his presence filling the space like a storm cloud ready to break.
Torrent climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine. The low rumble vibrated through the air, drawing more curious eyes.
As they pulled away from the pack house, Annalise let herself look back one last time. Liam stood on the porch, his arms crossed, his glare burning holes into her. Rhea clung to his side, pretending to comfort him. James avoided her gaze entirely.
Her chest ached, but she told herself it wasn’t grief, it was just, habit.
The ache of years spent in the same place, even if that place had never truly been home.
Kane must have felt the shift in her scent because his hand slid over hers. Warm. Steady.
“You’re not going back there,” he said quietly, but with the same finality as a promise carved on stone.
She nodded, not trusting herself to speak.
She turned back as the car moved, and her eyes met with her father's. And somehow, she knew he was up to something.
