01. The Price of Sacrifice
"Blair! Can you bring me my tie?" A voice called out to a woman who was busy preparing breakfast. She was already overwhelmed, and now the man in the bedroom was adding to her workload.
But Blair had no choice but to obey. After all, that man was her husband, Finn Harrison.
"Yes, just a moment!" Blair called out, leaving the soup she was making to rush into the bedroom.
This routine had been going on almost every day for three years. Exhausting? Of course, it was incredibly draining for Blair. She had never lived like this before - her life had been far better than this. But that life was something no one knew about except herself.
"Here," Blair handed him the tie, though her husband already looked annoyed because he thought she had moved too slowly.
"I could be late!" he complained.
"I'm sorry," Blair whispered. Since their marriage, she had never imagined her husband would change like this. Finn had become harsh and quick-tempered now, and it truly wounded her.
However, every time she tried to discuss it, Finn would inevitably bring up the subject of children, or rather Blair's failure to conceive after three years of marriage. That hurt her even more, which was why Blair chose to remain silent.
"I'll wait for you in the dining room, you should have breakfast first," Blair said as she walked back to the kitchen, resuming her cooking.
"I won't be having breakfast," Finn announced, emerging from the bedroom. "I won't be home for dinner either. I'm having dinner at my family's house tonight."
Blair stopped what she was doing and turned to look at Finn, who was busy putting his laptop in his bag.
"Would you like me to come? I can go to your family's house first, so you won't have to pick me up," Blair offered, but Finn just glared at her and shook his head.
"Don't bother. Just stay here. I'm sick of my mother constantly bringing up when you're going to get pregnant. I've had enough of hearing it for three years every time I bring you there."
Finn's words pierced Blair's heart like daggers. She was already deeply hurt by her in-laws, and now even her own husband kept wounding her with comments about pregnancy. Finn never defended her and continued to blame her.
"I'm leaving now," Finn announced before walking out of the house. Meanwhile, Blair remained frozen in place until the sound of the door slamming snapped her out of her daze.
"Finn! At least take your lunch box!" Blair shouted, running outside, but her husband's car was already driving out of their yard, impossible for her to catch.
"He didn't have breakfast and didn't take his lunch box. He won't have time for lunch later," Blair murmured.
Finn was extremely busy because his company was currently facing problems, which made Blair worried about his health. She even forgot the pain in her heart from his words, more concerned about her husband. Why? Simple - love. For three years, Blair had loved her husband more than herself, even more than her former life.
"Well, maybe he's tired of my cooking. I'll eat his lunch myself," Blair mumbled.
With her disheveled appearance and sweaty body, Blair walked back into the house. She accidentally passed a mirror in the family room.
Her steps halted in front of the mirror. Her eyes traveled from her feet to her hair - she looked terrible.
"Is this the happiness I wanted from the beginning?" she whispered. Her eyes welled up with tears as she remembered all her husband's increasingly cruel words.
"I never imagined my appearance would change like this after three years." Blair struggled to hold back her tears and forced a smile, laughing at herself for getting emotional.
"I don't have time for this, I need to clean the house..." Just as Blair was about to head to the kitchen, a sound came from her bedroom. Her phone was ringing, and Blair rushed to find her mother-in-law's name on the screen. Her mother-in-law, who had also made her life difficult for these three years.
"Hello, yes, Mother?" Blair answered the call from Agnes Harrison, her mother-in-law.
"Come here quickly, we need you. There's no one to help, we're short on servants to prepare dinner," her mother-in-law said without preamble.
Blair secretly sighed. She was already exhausted just managing her own house, and now she had to help with housework at the Harrison family home.
"I don't think I can come..." Blair refused, suddenly remembering that Finn didn't want her to go.
"And Finn said he doesn't want me to come," she added.
"Who said you could refuse? Come here now, Blair." Without waiting for Blair's response, Agnes hung up.
Blair stood silent for a moment, knowing how difficult it was to refuse her mother-in-law's demands. But besides Finn's words, she also couldn't refuse Agnes's request, so like it or not, Blair had to go there.
She dialed her husband's number to tell him she might be going to the Harrison family house. But several minutes passed with only unanswered rings.
"He must be busy. I'll tell him during dinner," Blair said, heading to the bathroom to shower and prepare to leave.
Two hours later, Blair was at the Harrison family house. She was already busy helping prepare dinner to celebrate her father-in-law's birthday.
"Look, isn't she Mr. Finn's wife? How pitiful that she's become a servant in this house," whispered one servant to another. Indeed, Blair looked like a servant in this house. No, she was even lower than them. She wasn't paid at all, merely used as additional help.
"If I were her, I wouldn't want to be treated like a servant." Blair heard it all but pretended not to hear. She continued busy with her work, wiping all the dusty furniture.
By seven in the evening, her mother-in-law and father-in-law were already dressed in beautiful and expensive clothes. They sat with other relatives at the large dining table, while Blair remained standing to help the other servants. Her clothes were worn out; she didn't look like a Harrison family daughter-in-law at all.
"Blair! Bring the tea! Dinner will start soon!" Agnes shouted.
"Yes, Mother," Blair replied. She was exhausted, having not rested all day, but her mother-in-law wouldn't let her rest.
Blair brought tea from the kitchen and accidentally crossed paths with a well-dressed Finn who had just arrived. Behind him was Victoria Chen, his secretary who was indeed very close to the Harrison family.
Without shame, Victoria immediately grabbed Finn's arm when she saw Blair.
"Blair? What are you doing here?" Finn asked, looking surprised. He looked at Blair's appearance and wrinkled his nose in disgust. "And your appearance..."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I was going to tell you that mother asked me to come and help," Blair answered with a forced smile.
"No wonder you look like that," Victoria mocked, trying to hold back her laughter, which made Finn's expression turn angry.
"You're embarrassing me!" he snapped.
"Embarrassing? I've been helping your mother all day, and you're embarrassed by my appearance?" Blair replied, unable to accept it. She was already exhausted, but Finn was yelling at her. Not to mention Victoria mocking her.
"That's because you're only fit to be a servant." Those words instantly made Blair furious. She clenched her fists tightly.
"Watch your words, I'm your wife..." But Finn just scoffed and walked past her without saying anything more. Now only Victoria stood before her, her annoying smile still visible. She walked closer to Blair and patted her shoulder lightly.
"A wife who's become a servant, you mean? Are you sure you'll continue to be Finn's wife if your situation is like this? How pathetic," she whispered with a devilish laugh that made Blair even more angry.
Blair remained silent, containing her anger. Her fury mixed with sadness - why was this happening to her? Why did she have to keep receiving such treatment and being treated like a servant just because of her love for Finn? They had no idea who Blair really was.
