XXXAcross the moonless night came the sound that the people of Plimpton Market had come to dread. The siren wailed, and from the houses, the occupants fled to their own shelters or to the communal ones in the town. Across the sky came a streak of light and the unmissable putt-putt noise of the V1 flying bomb. As the fire-watchers watched, who sat aloft in the tower of St Michael’s church, watched the sound cut out and the deadly weapon fell silently from the darkness. As it fell, a terrific explosion lit up the night sky; it’s source somewhere on the other side of town. Now, an orange glow hung over the horizon.
