Initially, his investigations yielded a pattern of small pieces that weren’t in their boxes or with their context group. Pieces that would go unnoticed unless someone was specifically looking for them. At first, he assumed that the pieces had been misplaced such was their insignificance, but then one day, he went looking for a particular brooch from an Anglo-Saxon cemetery. He’d been reading the report of the excavation and curiosity had got the better of him, and he wanted to see this brooch for himself such was the rarity of the find.
