"I Love You, But We Can't"

*What happens when the one person immune to your danger is also the only reason your heart forgets how to be safe?*

The air inside Elias’s clockwork shop along Escolta smelled of ozone, motor oil, and cold iron. Outside, a light drizzle reflected Manila’s streetlamps; inside, dozens of antique pendulum clocks ticked in a steady, mechanical orchestra.
Elias stood at his workbench, holding a custom-built brass pocket watch. It wasn’t meant to measure time—it was a bio-electric dampener engineered to absorb excess human voltage.
Across the table stood Isla. To high society, she was a wealthy heiress. But here, she was simply a woman carrying a dangerous secret. Since childhood, Isla’s body had acted as a living capacitor, unleashing destructive electrical surges whenever her emotions spiked. While her family hid her away in fear, Elias had spent months building this device so she could finally touch the world without breaking it.
"It's finished," Elias whispered, sliding the brass casing toward her.
Isla hesitated, removing her leather glove to reveal pale skin laced with silvery, electrical scars. As she reached for the watch, her bare fingertips accidentally brushed against Elias’s.
*Crack.*
The reaction was instantaneous. Her pulse spiked, triggering a massive surge of stored energy. Every lightbulb in the workshop shattered in unison, plunging the room into total darkness. On the desk, the watch whirred furiously, struggling to dissipate the charge.
"Elias..." Isla gasped, her chest heaving in the moonlight. "Your heart is racing. And so is mine."
Stepping closer, Elias ignored the static crackling in the air. "We can fix this, Isla. I can rebuild the core for higher voltage."
"You don't understand," she whispered, backing against a display case. "It's not the machine. It's us."
The pocket watch shrieked. Its brass casing glowed bright red, buckling under the sheer intensity of her feelings for him. Her everyday stress the device could handle; her love for Elias was an energy no machine could ever contain.
Tears spilled down Isla's cheeks as she looked at the ruined, melting metal on the desk.
"I love you..." she choked out, her voice breaking in the dark, "...but we can't."
She turned, threw open the heavy timber door, and vanished into the rainy Escolta night, leaving Elias alone in the shadows amidst shattered glass and the dying glow of melted brass.
