Chapter 28

“I’m okay, don’t worry sweetheart” that were the first words mom said when she woke up. Luckily apart from her broken ribs and a mild concussion, she was completely fine. I was so happy she woke up a little after we had arrived… She told me to get home though since it was still school tomorrow and she wasn’t going to allow me to stay with her. Too bad, I wouldn’t have minded skipping school.. I had stayed with her for a little while before the doctors came in and told me she needed rest. To my surprise Daniel and Sarah were still there and dropped me off back home. I had just gone straight to bed and all it took was closing my eyes to fall asleep, knowing my mother was alright.   This morning I’d woken up with a big headache but went to school nevertheless, just as my mom asked. I arrived at school and parked my scooter, walking to the school building carrying my helmet and bag. A cold shiver went up my spine and I cursed, hoping winter could be over already. I’ve had enough of the cold. I quickly walked inside and through the hallways and saw Daniel walking with Oliver. I know he’s probably gonna act like a complete asshole again but I just really want to thank him. I don’t know if he meant it or not, but I really appreciated him being there yesterday. Even though I just remember stress and panic for my mother I also remember his embrace calming me down a lot. I felt safe. “Hey Ella, how’s your mother?” Oliver asked when he noticed me coming towards them. “She’ll be okay”, I smiled which he instantly returned “I’m glad to hear that”. I turned to Daniel and he had his usual passive expression on. Here we go. “Hey Daniel, I just wanted to thank you for yesterday. I really appreciated it”, I told him but no eyeroll or smart mouth came and his answer completely surprised me “No problem, we’re here for you”. “Oh yeah, Sarah was looking for you”, Oliver told me before he walked away together with Daniel, leaving me slightly speechless. Maybe he’s finally starting to trust me to be around him… “Close your mouth, it’s gonna catch a fly”, Sarah’s voice snapped my eyes back up and I quickly closed my mouth. Hadn’t even realised that. “Thanks again for yesterday”, I said and she threw her arm around my shoulder “You could thank me by coming with us this weekend” She’s talking about the weekend at Jason’s beach house the group had planned but now I’m not sure if I wanna go. “I’m not sure”, I told her and the look on her face told me she wasn’t going to accept that. “Oh come on, you should come. Ethan’s coming too” “Yes Ella, you should totally go”, Alexander suddenly popped up next to me, leaning an arm on one of my shoulders before whispering to Sarah “Where should she go?”. “We’re going to Jason’s beach house tonight for the weekend”, Sarah told him and he chuckled “You’re going to the beach in January?”. “Yes and Ella has to come with us”, she gave me a stern look. “I don’t know, with my mom in the hospital”, I said and her face turned a little softer again. “Plus, I’m not the biggest fan of the beach. I hate sand, it gets everywhere and it just disgusts me”, I added, Alexander chuckling at that. “You could still go and just wear shoes to the beach”, Alexander said, poking my side. I softly hit his shoulder but he just sweetly smiled at me before resting his arm back on my shoulder. “Indeed, we hang around the house mostly anyway. It could totally cheer you up”, Sarah said just as the bell went off and most people started walking towards their classes. “Just think about it?” she pleaded and I nodded, waving both of them goodbye to go to my class.   I walked into my next class and went to sit to the next empty seat next to Ashley. “Hey”, she greeted me with a big smile. “How are you?” I asked her, getting my stuff out of my bag. “I’m alright”, she answered but being a girl myself, I know that’s the equivalent of ‘I’m fine’. “Have you talked to Liam yet?” I asked her and her face told me that was the problem. People my age really suck at communicating… “We have but never long”, she admitted as the teacher came in. “I’m having a sleepover next week with Sophia and Sarah, why don’t you come?” I whispered and she turned to me with big eyes before shaking her head “It’s alright, I don’t want to disturb”. “Please, I’d love it if you came”, I whispered again and she nodded after the teacher gave us a stern look. We both just laughed and turned forward, following the class.   The classes finally came to an end and I couldn’t be more relieved it was Friday. I stood by my locker and took out my helmet, thinking back to my birthday. I love that they chose red but I still think it was risky. It might be my favorite color but I don’t think everyone would chose a scooter in bright red. “Hey Michelle, what’s up?” I asked when she stopped next to my locker. “You should go with them this weekend”, she told me and I raised a brow at her. “Sarah told me” “Of course she did” Smart play Sarah… “Tell me how it went with Adam yesterday first”, I changed the subject and she let out a breath. “He told me everything and we’re working on it but now”, she narrowed her eyes at me. “We’ll stay with aunty and if anything happens, we’ll call you”, she said, trying to convince me again. “I don’t know Michelle” “It will be good for you”, she said and four hours later I was indeed seated in the car, making it’s way to the beach.   When we arrived, Matthew, Sarah, Ethan, Jason, Eric, Blake and I quickly had dinner before Matthew, Jason and I went outside to start a bonfire. Seemed like a good idea, having some marshmallows around a cosy fire, telling stories and so. “It’s stupid the other couldn’t be here”, Matthew said, pouring a drink and passing it to me. Jason poked the fire a few times before the three of us sat down. “Why didn’t they come?” I asked, taking the drink. “Daniel is with Tilly for the weekend and Oliver and Sophia had plans already as well but didn’t wanna say what”, Jason answered, keeping his gaze at the fire. “Everyone is being so secretive”, I commented with a chuckle before taking a sip from the drink. “Yeah, we know all about that”, Matthew mused, smirking at Jason who instantly started glaring at him. Alright, what am I missing this time? “Jason totally has the biggest secret” he added, raising his brows a couple of times at Jason. Could it be what I think it is? “Shut up Matthew”, he said and got up from the chair, walking off. That was mean Matthew… “You pissed him off”, I shook my head at him and he held up his hands in surrender. “It’s nothing bad. He still loves me”, he laughed as Sarah came outside and plopped down next to him, stealing his drink from his hands. “Whatever”, he muttered, shaking his head but she just stuck out her tongue at him. “Aren’t the others coming outside?” I asked Sarah and she looked around. “I thought Jason was with you guys?” she changed looks between Matthew and I “Matthew was mean so he went away”. Sarah just rolled her eyes before continuing “The others are still inside unpacking”. I nodded and Matthew got up, getting something from his bag. He took out a another bottle of liquor and turned to me. “Ella, do you mind getting some ice?” Matthew asked me, showing me a big smile. “Sure, where is it?” I sighed, lazily getting out the chair and he instantly answered “In the fridge in the garage”. “Thanks”, he smiled sweetly and patted my head as I passed him. I walked back to the house and calmly opened the backdoor of the garage. I stepped in but instantly stopped moving with the sight in front of me. “Oh my god”, I voiced out.  I did not see that one coming.
