Chapter 27

1509 Words
The sound of the doorbell made me look up from my position on the couch. After dinner, Matthew went out and I told Sarah I’d be fine. I went home and called my mother, shortly telling her about how dad came to school. She was absolutely furious and told me she was gonna come home right away but that could still take a couple of hours.   I stood up and made my way over to the door, opening it to reveal Adam. “Hey”, he said, a cautious look on his face. “Come in”, I stepped aside and let him in, closing the door behind him. You could just feel the tension coming of off him. “You want something to drink? I was gonna make some tea”, I asked when he sat down at the dinning table. He gave me a nod and I shortly disappeared to the kitchen to put the water on. When I stepped back in the living room he looked up, obviously stressed. I just wasn’t sure if it was because of the breakup or because he had to talk about it. “You wanted to talk”, he said, looking guilty back in his lap. He just looked like a little kid being punished. “Can you stop doing that. I’m not mad I just want to know why”, I told him before taking a seat in front of him. “What do you want to know?” he asked softly. “Did you break up because of what I told you” “Yes and no” “Can you be a little more specific”, I told him as I felt him avoid my question. “It’s just not easy to talk about” he looked sad. If breaking up with her made him sad, then why did he do it? “You know you can tell me, right?” “Yeah, I’m kind of having a hard time with that”, he whispered lowly and my head turned when I heard the kettle go off. “I’ll be right back”, I stood again and walked to the kitchen. What’s up with men and having a hard time voicing their feelings? I poured the hot water in two mugs and dropped teabags in them. Can’t go wrong with chamomile tea, right? “Hey Ella, what’s this?” I heard Adam say. Carefully picking up the mugs, I walked back and placed them on the table. “What?” I asked and saw him with my phone in his hand. “You’ve got three chances to win this, better make them count. You already have a first one?” he read from my phone before looking up with confused brows “What kind of freaky s**t are you into?” I narrowed my eyes at him and slowly walked over, taking the phone he handed to me.   - You’ve got three chances to win this, better make them count. You already have a first one?– unknown   -I’m still debating – I looked at Adam curiously and typed the reply before quickly focussing my eyes back on Adam. He didn’t move, looking confused as f**k and I was actually really relieved when I felt the phone in my hand vibrate. It isn’t him.   -Don’t take too long– unknown I read the reply and looked up once again at Adam who just sat there, no phone in his hands.   “It’s nothing, don’t worry about it”, I dismissed and placed my phone back on the table. “What was the dream you were talking about Adam?” I changed the subject back and I felt him grow slightly nervous again. He took the tea, taking a sip before he finally answered “I got a scholarship and I really want to go”. “So what’s the problem then?” “It’s really far away. The problem is that I know Michelle and I know that she would drop all of her plans just to come with me”, he explained, putting his face in his hands. He did it because he didn’t want her to give up on her dreams. Oh boy, I misjudged him so hard… “I love her Ella, I just don’t want her to give it all up for me”, he added and I was so glad to hear that. Does Michelle know about this though? “Does she know?” “No” “You have to tell her Adam. If you both love each other, you’ll find a way to deal with this but it can’t just be your decision alone”, I told him and he looked up at me with big eyes “You think so?” “I know so”, I answered and his expression relaxed before he looked up at me with a smile “You know, you really remind me of someone”. “Who?” “My sister”, he said and I felt my heart ache. That’s why he was so protective around me… This guy is so far from what I first thought. “She was just as headstrong as you are” “I wish I could have met her” “Yeah, she would have really liked you”, he sighed and I got up from my seat. “You have to go fix this, like now”, I told him and he instantly nodded, like it clicked in him as well. He quickly got up as well and put on his jacket before running to the door. “Hey Adam”, I stopped him and he shortly turned around “Good luck” He smiled at me and ran out the door before I could throw in anything else.   I was wrong, he is good for her. He has to start telling her his problems because such decisions have to be made together, not for each other. That’s not how relationships work, believe me…   The sound of my phone got my attention again. Picking it up from the table, I read the ID and felt my eyes almost pop out their sockets. Unknown… He wouldn’t. Not a f*****g chance. I slowly pressed the answer button and put the phone to my ear “Hello?” “Hello, is this Ella Clark?” “Yes, who’s this?”, I asked when I didn’t recognize the voice. This isn’t him at all. “I’m doctor Abell. I’m calling because your mother had an accident”   Shortly after that phone call, I had called Sarah in full panic. I didn’t think it was a good for me to drive in this condition. She told me immediately she’d drive and arrived at my house not even 10 minutes later. When I stepped out though, I didn’t see her car but got in nevertheless. That’s not important anyway. “We’ll get there, don’t worry”, Sarah told me as I got in the back but my eyes instantly turned to Daniel in the driver seat. “He came home earlier and Matthew took my car”, Sarah quickly explained and Daniel rode us off the driveway, quickly speeding off. Breath Ella, she’ll be fine. But still I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her. The worst thing is that it’s my fault. She went on the road because I told her about dad, she was emotional because of my call and she was probably worried because of me…   “We’re here”, Daniel voice snapped me back and I immediately got out of the car. I ran through the doors and hurried to the help desk. “I’m here for my mother, Elisabeth Clark. She was in an accident”, I told her and she turned to her computer, typing something on it. Come on, hurry up… I was so scared for my mother and this was all taking too long. “She’s on the third floor, room 305”, the nurse told me and I bolted towards the elevators. Everything was taking too long… The doors finally opened and I got in, finally noticing Sarah and Daniel were still with me. My eyes connected with Sarah’s and as she gave me a sad smile I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing out. I was just so exhausted. She rushed over and threw her arm around me “She’ll be okay”. The doors opened again and my eyes started roaming the doors for number 305. I finally found her room and luckily a nurse stepped out of the room. “Are you the daughter?” she asked and I nodded, not caring about my tear stained face. “We don’t know what happened exactly but she got hit by another car”, she started and I put my bottom lip in between my teeth, keeping in the sobs. “She hit her head really hard and has a few broken ribs but she should be fine. We just have to wait until she wakes up”, the nurse finished. “Thank you doctor”, Sarah stepped up, resting a hand on my shoulder. “Is there any other family we should contact?” “I’ll contact them”, Sarah told them and turned to me “I’ll be right back okay” I gave her a nod and she and the nurse went to stand a bit away. Why my mother again? She already went through so much in life, she doesn’t deserve this… I felt someone pull me into a hug and then I realised I was full on sobbing again. “Shh, I got you”, I heard Daniel whisper as he gently pulled me closer, as if I would break at any moment. I just can’t lose her. Not again. “I don’t want to be alone again”, I desperately grabbed his shirt as I felt his hand softly stroke my hair. “You won’t be, I promise”, he answered and I closed my eyes, wishing today never had happened.
