Chapter 1
The Past
Lina’s heels clicked sharply against the marble floors of Greenwood & Keller LLP, each step echoing through the grand lobby. It was an unmistakable sound, one that marked her place in the world she had carefully built. The towering skyscrapers that surrounded the city’s financial district mirrored her own life an intricate balance of cold ambition and steely determination.
Her office was sleek, minimalist, with a single piece of art on the wall a reminder that even in her highly structured world, she could make room for beauty. Her desk was impeccably organized, a reflection of her mindset: controlled, precise, and focused. Yet, despite the perfect facade, there was an invisible weight that sat heavily on her chest. The thought of Dylan had never completely left her mind.
It had been five years since the last time she had seen him five years since Dylan Blackwood had disappeared from her life without a trace. Five years since the man who had once promised her the world walked away and left her in a haze of unanswered questions. That night still haunted her; the night she had waited for him to come back, the silence growing unbearable. He never did.
Lina had learned to fill the silence with the hum of her work. She was good at it. She had risen quickly through the ranks at her firm, becoming a partner within three years. She had buried the hurt deep, focusing all her energy on her career, becoming a woman who was known for her intellect, ambition, and unyielding strength. The people who worked with her respected her. But no one knew the scars she carried.
As her phone buzzed on the desk, she snapped back to reality. Jenna, her assistant, had texted her:
“Lina, there’s a new client meeting this afternoon. Blackwood Enterprises. The CEO, Dylan Blackwood, specifically requested you.”
Lina’s breath hitched. She could feel the weight of his name all over again. She stared at the message, unable to tear her gaze away. The pounding of her heart echoed in her ears. It was as though her entire world had stopped, and all the years of self-discipline, of burying the past, came crumbling down in an instant.
She took a deep breath. There was no way around this. She had to face him. She had to face the man who had once been her everything.
A New Opportunity
The sun had barely risen when Lina arrived at Blackwood Enterprises, her mind consumed by the thought of what was to come. The building was imposing, sleek, and modern, every inch of it reflecting the success Dylan had built after he left her. The place stood as a testament to his ability to rise, even after everything.
Lina’s heart raced as the elevator ascended, the smooth metallic walls reflecting her face a mixture of determination and unease. She stood straight, trying to compose herself, but as the elevator stopped, she felt a chill run through her body. She had known this moment would come, but she hadn’t been prepared for how it would make her feel.
When the doors slid open, she was escorted down a long corridor, her footsteps muffled by the plush carpet beneath her feet. The door to the conference room opened, and there he was Dylan. Tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, his dark hair slightly tousled, his gaze fixed out of the window, seemingly lost in thought.
It had been five years, but the moment she saw him, the floodgates opened. His presence was magnetic everything she remembered. Her breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know if it was anger, nostalgia, or something else entirely, but her body reacted instinctively.
Lina forced herself to move forward. As she entered the room, he turned slowly. His eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, it felt as though the world had stopped. The years had gone by, but here he was, standing before her, the man who had once stolen her heart.
“Lina,” he said, his voice deep and steady, though there was a slight tremor she could almost miss. “It’s been a long time.”
The way he said her name sent a ripple of emotions through her. She steadied her breath, fighting to keep her voice even. “I never expected this,” she replied, her voice colder than she intended. “To be working with you, of all people.”
Dylan’s lips quirked slightly, though his gaze remained unreadable. “I know it’s unexpected. But I requested you for this case. You’re the best at what you do.”
His words were professional, and yet, beneath them, she could hear something else—something that made her doubt his impassive demeanor. He had requested her. The weight of that sent her mind spinning. She had longed for an explanation for years, and now here he was, so close, so tangible. But this wasn’t the time for old emotions to resurface.
She nodded curtly. “I’ll make sure we get results. Let’s discuss the case.”
The Reunion
As the days passed, Lina and Dylan found themselves working together closely on the case. It wasn’t easy. Every meeting was charged with an unspoken tension, a simmering conflict that neither of them could fully address. Dylan was ever the professional detached, calm, and precise. But she could feel the weight of his presence in every room they shared. The way he lingered on her words, the brief moments where their eyes would meet, only for him to look away almost instantly.
Lina, for her part, fought to maintain her composure. She was here for the case, she reminded herself. Nothing more. He didn’t deserve any more of her thoughts. But the truth was, she wasn’t sure if she still wanted to hate him, or if, somehow, she was still waiting for him to give her a reason to forgive him.
They spoke mostly about business, keeping things formal, but every conversation felt like a carefully constructed dance. There were moments where Lina found herself wondering what had happened to him? Why had he left without a word? Was there something more to the story? And yet, whenever she tried to probe deeper, Dylan would shut down, his professional wall thicker than ever.
One evening, after a particularly grueling meeting, they found themselves walking out of the conference room together. The building was nearly empty, the only sounds the distant hum of the city and the soft click of their footsteps.
“You’ve changed,” Lina remarked quietly, her gaze not quite meeting his. “You’re not the person I remember.”
Dylan’s expression softened, but he didn’t answer immediately. “People change, Lina. Life forces us to.”
