Chapter Five

A wave of relief washed over me as soon as I saw him. I didn’t care if I looked crazy running towards him; his face was twisted with wonder as he looked up and leaned forward, stepping closer. I quickly passed him and hid behind his back. He turned around, looking at me with a puzzled expression. Fresh tears pricked at my eyes as my heart raced. “He... He...” I stammered, trying to compose myself. I fumbled my words, struggling to catch my breath. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concern lacing his voice. His blue eyes bore into mine. Suddenly, we heard hurried footsteps that pulled us out of our trance. There he was, standing with a shocked expression on his face. A myriad of thoughts raced through my mind. What if Chase hadn't shown up? What would my fate have been? I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind. Sweat trickled down the manager's face when he spotted Chase. Sure he was a jerk but I never thought he would do this. "Stay here," he ordered, pushing me further behind him. It was as if he knew what had happened without me saying a thing. Chase approached the manager with long strides. “What do you think you’re doing?” he accused John "Good evening, sir-" John said, smoothing down his long gray pants. “Do you know I could have you arrested for assault? To think that you are an employer sickens me,” Chase said in one breath cutting him off and pushing him to the wall. “Please, she’s lying! If anything, she is the one who came on to me!” John protested, feigning innocence. From where I stood, I could see Chase’s muscles tightening in his black velvet suit. In an instant, he grabbed the john's shirt. Fear was evident in the manager's eyes. I slowly backed away until my back hit the car. My body shook uncontrollably as I wondered what my fate could have been if I hadn't acted on instinct. “Don't you dare look at her!” Chase bellowed, snapping me back to reality. “Get in the car!” That was all I heard. I quickly went to the passenger side, yanked the door open, and hurried inside. The car was a warm contrast to the cold breeze outside. A familiar scent filled the interior, and I welcomed it. All I could hear were raised voices from outside. I dared not look as warm tears stained my cheeks. Digging my fingers into my palms, I welcomed the pain to distract me from my thoughts. “Are you okay?” Chase asked. I was so lost in thought that I didn't notice him getting into the car. I simply nodded. He started driving off, and all I could think about was how unfortunate I was. He gripped the steering wheel as if his life depended on it. After a while, I had calmed down and my tears had stopped. “Why were you there this late?” he asked, his tone accusatory, filling the silent car. “Working, obviously,” I replied, trying to find my voice. “But it’s late,” he answered firmly. “What are you trying to say?” I asked, annoyance creeping in “That you shouldn’t be working that late alone,” he said. I could feel anger replacing sadness inside me at his audacity to question me after what he had seen. “Unlike you, other people have problems to solve,” I retorted, turning away from him to face the window. I was in no mood to engage with him after what had just happened. He was infuriating, and I didn't need his constant judgment. “Listen, I might not know the circumstances, but you shouldn’t have been there.” “It’s like you gave him the perfect opportunity,” he said nonchalantly. I couldn't believe him. Just when I thought he had a decent bone in his body, he went and said that. “Stop the car,” I surprised myself by saying. I could feel his gaze on me, but I had had enough of his taunts and judgments. “I said stop the car!” I threatened, staring at him coldly. He kept driving while glancing at me as if evaluating my mood. “If you don’t stop this car, I’ll haul myself onto the road. Don’t think I won’t do it,” I said, narrowing my eyes at him. I knew I sounded childish, but I needed to get out of that car or I would lose my mind. He finally relented and pulled over to the nearest stop. “Christ! Don’t die on my account,” he said, pushing back his hair in frustration. I didn't know what to think. He was rude to me, and yet he had saved me. I still wondered what he was doing outside my job. A coincidence, maybe? I didn't know. "Why were you there?” I inquired. “I wanted to speak to you. You blew me off, and nobody does that,” he replied, facing me. He slowly turned off his car by pressing a button, and I was shocked. How loaded was this guy? I only saw cars like this in advertisements; never in a million years would I imagine being in one of them. “So you waited for me because I hurt your ego?” I asked in disbelief. I shifted uneasily in my seat, feeling wary about the fact that he was a total stranger I had met a few days ago, and we were alone in his car. “Stop being a smartass. It’s not that it meant anything to me. You are not my type,” he answered sharply. “Just as I thought. Goodnight, and thank you for helping me. I’ll find my way from here,” I said with finality. I was exhausted and needed a moment to collect my thoughts. I slowly got out and walked over to the curb. Pulling out my phone from my back pocket I checked for a cab. The cold breeze was unforgiving and I cursed for leaving my things at work. I clutched onto my body as I waited for my cab. "Get in the car and stop being stubborn." Chase bellowed stepping out of his car. "I am not your servant stop barking orders at me," I screamed at him. I had enough for the day and I just wanted to get home and curl myself to sleep. I could hear his footsteps getting closer. He stood a foot from me and stared at the road ahead. I didn't know why he was still here and what he wanted from me. "I have a black belt so don't try anything.' I said trying to intimidate him. "I can see that." He chuckled lightly and it was a sound I gladly welcomed. "Listen I am sorry for what I said in the car. I can be an asshole sometimes and it wasn't your fault. It shouldn't have happened." He said sighing. I was shocked at his confession and I couldn't help but marvel at his ability to change moods. "Gee, thanks." That was all I could say. "To answer your question, I came to offer you the job. Ever since you left Mia hasn't stopped asking about you. She has practically driven everyone away. I am doing all this for her sake and I am not saying that I trust you fully but I am willing to give it a shot for my Mia." He spoke quietly and my heart lurched.
