THE GIRL IN THE RAIN
Rain poured heavily across the lonely road, covering the dark city in endless water and shadows. Thunder crashed violently in the sky while cold wind swept through the empty streets like a warning of something terrible about to happen. Chloe Bennett ran desperately through the rain, her breathing uneven as fear consumed every part of her body. Her soaked white dress clung tightly to her trembling figure while mud stained her bare legs from falling countless times during her escape. Tears mixed with the rain streaming down her face, but she didn’t stop moving for even a second. She knew if she slowed down tonight, she would die.

Chloe’s heartbeat pounded painfully inside her chest as panic pushed her forward again. Her legs already burned from exhaustion, but fear was stronger than pain. She didn’t even understand why men were chasing her with guns in the first place. Everything had happened too fast. One moment she was returning home from work, and the next moment strange men surrounded her apartment building, forcing her to run for her life into the stormy night. She had tried calling for help, but her phone was gone. She had screamed for people to help her, but nobody stopped.
Nobody cared.
Another gunshot exploded behind her.
Chloe gasped loudly as the bullet struck a metal pole beside her, making sparks fly into the rain. Her body shook violently as terror crawled deeper into her chest. She quickly turned into another empty road, desperately searching for somewhere safe to hide, but every direction looked unfamiliar now. The city suddenly felt too large, too dark, too cruel. Her wet hair stuck against her pale skin while cold air hit her body painfully. She was losing strength quickly, and deep down, she knew she couldn’t keep running forever.
“Catch her before she reaches the main road!” someone shouted angrily.
Chloe pushed herself harder despite the dizziness clouding her vision. Her breathing became rough and unstable as fear mixed with confusion inside her mind. Broken flashes of memories suddenly appeared in her head without warning. Blood. Fire. Her mother screaming. A man carrying her while gunshots echoed everywhere. Chloe pressed one trembling hand against her forehead, trying to steady herself, but the sharp pain only became worse. She didn’t understand why those strange images kept appearing recently. It felt like parts of her life were hidden behind locked doors inside her own mind.
Suddenly, bright headlights appeared ahead of her.
A black luxury car sped through the rain at terrifying speed before stopping sharply only inches away from her body. Water splashed violently around Chloe as she stumbled backward in shock, her chest rising and falling heavily. The expensive car looked dark and intimidating beneath the stormy sky, like something dangerous had arrived straight from her nightmares. Every instinct inside her told her to run away immediately, but before she could move, the back door opened slowly.
“Get in.”
The voice was deep.
Cold.
Powerful.
Chloe froze instantly.
Inside the dark car sat a man dressed completely in black, his sharp features partially hidden by shadows. Even without seeing him clearly, Chloe could already feel the dangerous energy surrounding him. He looked calm despite the chaos outside, like violence and fear meant absolutely nothing to him. His silver watch reflected faintly beneath the dim car lights while one tattooed hand rested carelessly against the leather seat beside him. Everything about him screamed power.
Another gunshot echoed nearby.
Chloe flinched violently.
“I said get in,” the man repeated calmly.
Fear tightened inside Chloe’s chest as she looked behind her again. The men chasing her were getting closer. She could already hear their footsteps splashing through the rain. Without thinking further, she quickly entered the car and slammed the door shut behind her. The driver immediately accelerated, speeding away from the road while black vehicles appeared behind them in pursuit.
Inside the luxurious car, silence filled the air heavily.
Chloe tried to catch her breath while water dripped from her soaked body onto the expensive leather seats. Her entire body trembled uncontrollably from cold and fear, but something else quickly distracted her. The man beside her was staring intensely at her face without saying a single word. His grey eyes were sharp, unreadable, yet strangely familiar in a way Chloe couldn’t explain. It wasn’t normal staring. It looked more like shock.
The man suddenly leaned slightly closer.
And for the first time, Chloe saw his face clearly.
Dangerously handsome.
Cold.
Perfect.
The kind of face capable of destroying lives without mercy.
Yet at that moment, his calm expression cracked slightly as disbelief flashed across his eyes.
“No…” he whispered faintly.
Chloe frowned immediately.
“What?” she asked softly.
But the man barely heard her.
His jaw tightened slowly as emotions he buried years ago suddenly resurfaced without warning. The girl sitting beside him… the girl he personally watched disappear years ago… was alive. Impossible. Completely impossible. Yet here she was beside him, trembling from fear while staring at him with confused innocent eyes that still haunted him after all these years.
The driver suddenly spoke from the front seat.
“Boss, they’re still following us.”
The man’s expression instantly turned cold again.
“Lose them.”
“Yes, sir.”
The car accelerated faster through the rainy streets.
Chloe held the seat tightly as panic returned inside her chest. “Who are you people?” she asked nervously.
Silence.
Then finally, the man beside her answered calmly.
“Adrian Knight.”
The name alone changed the atmosphere instantly.
Even Chloe, who knew almost nothing about the dangerous world around her, had heard whispers about Adrian Knight before. Billionaire CEO. Ruthless businessman. The devil hidden behind luxury and power. People feared him. Some even claimed he controlled the underground world secretly from the shadows.
And right now…
She was sitting beside him.
Adrian kept staring quietly at Chloe’s face while deadly thoughts moved through his mind. He remembered the blood. The fire. The night he lost her years ago. He remembered searching endlessly for her body after the m******e, only to find nothing. Everyone believed she died that night.
