Chapter 1:
Emily’s POV I’m sitting here enjoying my time at my favorite spot next to my favorite tree. I do this twice a week, but it doesn’t seem to be enough. I wish I could come here everyday, but with my family being the way they are I can only do it twice. The weather is beautiful today, the water is glistening under the sun and it’s pure silence, just what I need. I don’t understand why my family hates me. I haven’t done anything wrong. All I do is go to school, come home, sit in my room, and not bother anyone. Why do they have to be so cruel to me? As I sit here I start to think back to everything that has happened. Most things I don’t remember, but I try hard to think about everything leading up to this point. The only thing that seems to stick is this spot. My getaway place it shall be named. I’m not to sure why, but I’m happy it stays, because it’s my only happy place that no one knows about. I’m regretting needing to go home as the sun is starting to set. I only live 15 minutes away walking distance. I wish I had a car, but my parents say I don’t deserve one. My brother and sister on the other hand got to have whatever car of their choosing when they were 16. My brother, David chose to have a supped up mustang for his 16th birthday. He is 19 now and since then he’s changed everything about the car, because it wasn’t to his liking I wouldn’t even call it a mustang at this point. My sister, Anastasia chose to have a hot pink Mercedes with the doors that slide up instead of opening out like a normal car. She’s 18 now and is the most spoiled person I have ever met. I’m 17 and had this small nice car picked out before I turned 16. I knew my parents wouldn’t get me anything special, so I chose a beat up Pontiac impala. When my birthday came I was hesitant to ask them about my car or if I was getting one. I didn’t want to have to deal with getting yelled at and being taunted, so I waited for them to approach me about it. Grave mistake I guess. They came to me and said I didn’t deserve to have a car since I’ve been thinking I can do whatever I want. Which isn’t true. I do every little thing like I walk on eggshells around them. I don’t want to step over a line by accidentally saying the wrong thing that will result in me having to clean more around the house, or possibly getting smacked. I don’t know how they can come up with more things to clean I’m like their maid. I do everything, I cook for them, clean everything, I even do every one’s laundry. One time I guess I said something that they didn’t approve of and made me wash the outside of the house in the winter at night. I didn’t get much sleep that night. I figured it was time to pull myself out of my thoughts considering the sun is almost down and I need to start cleaning up after everyone’s dinner. I got up and heard a slight movement or a crunch of a branch breaking. I looked around thinking one of my family members found my spot and prepared for the worst to happen. I didn’t see anyone though. Everything was as it should be. I was still alone. I rushed off before I could hear anything else. Considering it’s about to be dark I don’t want to risk anything bad happening to me as I walk home. The walk home wasn’t too bad. There was a small breeze, but that’s a given as time gets closer to fall in September. I got to the front porch and notice the lights are all on. I guess everyone has gone to their rooms for the rest of the night. They probably think I’m still in my room. The only thing I like about being here is they never come to my room. I live in the smallest room on the first floor across from kitchen and adjacent to the basement. It’s cozy, so I can’t complain too much. Also makes it easier for me to stay away from everyone for the most part. They don’t like to go anywhere near the basement. They say they’re “too clean” to go near such filthy places. I open the door quietly and start turning off the lights before going to my room. As I walk into the living room to turn the lamp and tv off, I noticed that the house next door has a new family that moved in. I wonder how long that will last. No one stays in the house for longer than a couple months at a time. Before getting to my room I noticed all the dishes piled up in the kitchen. “How can 4 people make such a mess?” I whispered. I get to work cleaning all dishes and putting them away. Wiping down all the counters and cabinets before sauntering over to my room. I close my bedroom door and take off my day clothes before putting on my pajamas which is just sweatpants and a t shirt. I tidy up my room a little bit, put clothes away in my dresser from the laundry I did earlier today, and lay down. It’s nice to relax a little bit before heading to bed. I pull out my phone and noticed I have a message from my best friend, Amelia. We are the same age, but she’s a grade below me because of the month her birthday falls on. We text each other back and forth for a while before saying goodnight. I put my phone on the charger, go to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face, and get in bed to go to sleep.
