Chapter 7:

Nickolas POV I didn’t know how to respond. She told me a lot and all I want to do is just hold her. How long has this been going on? How has no one noticed? I didn’t think it would be this bad. I knew she tensed up when she heard her mom coming down the stairs, so I put my hand on her back to let her know she’s not alone. I don’t know what to say I’m utterly shocked with everything she told me. I heard her clearing her throat and looked up to see she had tears built up in her eyes. “I understand if you don’t want anything to do with me now.” She mumbled. “That’s the last thing I want.” I held her hands in mine and looked into her eyes. “I know we just met, but I have never felt more connected to someone or something than I am with you. When I saw you yesterday I had this urge to keep you safe from everything. You looked so lost and I just wanted to hold you and tell you everything will be okay.” I spoke softly. She sniffled and I wiped her tears away with my thumb. “You know, it’s funny. When I came home earlier all I could think about was how easy it was to talk to you.” She said with a small smile. Her smile is the most precious thing I have ever seen in my life. After the moment we had we decided to stop talking about emotional stuff and enjoy each others company. She asked me about my life and what I like to do. We made a plan that we would keep our windows open just in case anything were to happen. I’m dedicated to keeping her safe at any moment. As we were in the middle of a conversation I noticed she hid her phone under her pillow which I thought was weird. Shortly after she did that her door opened up and behind the door appeared to be her brother. “Emily!..” He started to say before quickly realizing someone else was in the room. “Oh I see you have company. Hey man, I’m David. Emily’s older brother.” He said while holding his hand out for a handshake. “I’m Nick. We just moved in next door.” I told him while shaking his hand. It was a pretty stiff handshake as if he was trying to assert dominance. Too bad for him, I won’t let him get to me. “Cool, anyway Emily mom said you need to have dinner ready soon and dishes need to be done, since it’s your night to cook and wash up after.” He said as if I didn’t know what was really going on when I wasn’t around. She nodded and said she’d be right out to start. He left closing the door behind him. “Do you want to stay for dinner?” She questioned with hope in her eyes. “I’d love to!” I said with a smile. We got to the kitchen and started to prep for dinner. “Alright, what are we making tonight?” I said while clapping my hands together ready to tackle dinner preparation with her. She pulls out a recipe book and turns to a certain page. “We are making garlic lime shrimp pasta” she said excitedly. “Cool beans!, where do we start?” I asked politely. She set up some pans to sear the shrimp after deveining them and had me squeeze some limes into a measuring cup. After I was done squeezing limes she had me finely cut some garlic, and put it in the pan with the shrimp. While she seared the shrimp she asked me to boil a pot of water to cook the angel hair noodles. After about an hour and a half of cooking we were finally done and dispersing portions into bowls. She made the correct amount with no left overs I was astounded by everything she did. She told everyone dinner was ready after setting the table. Everyone came down and I got to meet her dad and older sister. “Hey, I’ve never met you before. I’m Anastasia, what’s your name?” Anastasia asked. “I’m Nick. My parents and I just moved into the house next door.” She stared at me for a while and smiled mischievously. I was a little weirded out by the motion, but decided to ignore it and smiled politely instead. Emily sat down next to me and smiled and her sister sat on the other side. While we were eating I felt a hand on my thigh and got very uncomfortable knowing that Emily wouldn’t be the one to do something like that since she’s been shy. I remove Anastasia’s hand quickly and resume eating. “So Nick, where are you going to school?” Mr. Haven asked out of the blue. “I’ll be attending Western High starting next week.” I replied. “Oh good, Anastasia here can show you around then, right?” He asked. “I was thinking Emily could show me around since we are in the same grade.” I spoke out making sure they all knew I was here for Emily and not Anastasia who tries to put her hand on my leg again. “Okay, that makes sense, but Anastasia has been there longer, so she knows her way around and knows all the teachers.” He said once again trying to make it a point that he wants me to become closer to Anastasia and not Emily. “I’m sorry Mr. Haven, but I personally would like for Emily to show me around. I’m honestly not too comfortable with Anastasia at the moment. She’s been trying to grope me this entire dinner and I’d really appreciate it if she’d stop trying to pursue me.” I replied politely not trying to cause any issues. The rest of dinner was silent after I spoke out how I felt. Anastasia stopped putting her hand on me and Mr. Haven stopped asking me questions. No one else said anything else, but I could see that every one was staring daggers at Emily while she was looking down at her food the entire time. Emily and I went back to her room after we cleaned up the kitchen and wiped the counters down. “I’m sorry my sister was touching you during dinner.” Emily said quietly as she was closing her bedroom door. “It’s not your fault. I’m sorry if I caused any problems by speaking out. I know they won’t do anything while I’m here, but anything that happens later please tell me or jump out of your window and come hang out in my room for the night if you need to. My window will always be open slightly for you.” I told her. “Thank you. I really do appreciate it. You don’t have any idea on what this means to me.” She said. After another hour of being with Emily we both noticed it was starting to get late and thought I should head home. We bid our goodbyes outside and each went to our respective homes. Once I was inside I had the biggest smile on my face. I know we just moved here, but I can’t help knowing the girl I saw yesterday all by herself was opening up to me little bits at a time. I know she’s the girl I want to spend my life with. I just need to get her out of the awful situation she’s in.
