Emily’s POV
I started to be happy with the walk and little cafe run. He noticed my cut on my head. I felt like I wanted to tell him everything. It felt right that I could tell him everything, like he was my saving grace. I didn’t want to open up too much though. I know if I open up something bad will happen. Something always happens. I know I already said too much when I told him I don’t have very many friends. I didn’t want him to pity me at all. Honestly I was surprised to hear that I was here at the lake yesterday. I don’t remember it at all. Maybe the bump on my head is the cause of my memories from the past day to be gone from my mind. I was pulled from my thoughts when I saw a hand waving in front of my face. “Hey Emily, do you want to continue our walk of the town in the other direction?” Nick asked suddenly. “Oh yeah, sure we can do that.” I forgot I was showing him around town for a minute. I always get lost when I come to the lake. I’m not used to having someone with me at my favorite spot. We sat for a bit longer before getting up and throwing our cups away to continue our walk.
We walked past both of our houses and continued talking here and there, but not like it was when we walked the other way. I still can’t get over the fact that he saw me drooling over him when I opened my window earlier. I thought my lie would work for sure. I guess luck wasn’t on my side today. As we continued to walk we started getting closer to in town where all of the little shops were that the kids I go to school with hang out, including my siblings. Although my brother is not in school anymore, but my sister is on her last year and they both come to town quite often with their friends. All the shops included a general store where you can get groceries, clothes, anything you needed really. An antique store, a Walgreens, some hardware stores, a diner that serves a lot of decent food, and a couple mom and pop shops that have handcrafted knickknacks. If you had a car you could drive way further to go to the mall and all the expensive stores, but I like to get my things in town since I can only walk places. At least my job is also in town. If I ever need to get anything it’s always close by.
We walked around a bit before saying anything letting him take in everything. “Soooo, what store would you like to go in first?” He asked suddenly. “Oh, I usually just go to the general store and the diner. I work at the diner during the week after school.” I replied. “Okay, so do you want to go in anywhere? If not, that’s okay we can just head back.” He said. I pondered on the thought of going home not really wanting to be there, but I needed to start lunch soon. I didn’t want to risk getting in trouble if no one had lunch ready for them. “Uh maybe next time. I need to get home and do stuff” I quickly said. “What more do you have to do on a weekend? I thought you had your chores done for today.” He questioned me. S**t now I have to come up with a response that won’t make it sound like I’m just at home tending to everyone’s needs, but if I tell him the truth maybe he will understand and not ask anymore questions. I thought for a bit before answering him truthfully. I figured if I wanted a friend I shouldn’t hide anything at least not the unimportant things. “Well you see I have to get home and make lunch for everyone. If it’s not ready I could get grounded” I said hesitantly. He nodded and we headed back. It took about 10 minutes to walk back. Not too far of a walk for us.
We got to our homes and bid our goodbyes, but before I could head towards the front porch he struck me with a question I wasn’t expecting at all. “Maybe later we can hangout and just chill? Possibly get to know each other more?” I didn’t want to sound rude so I agreed. “Where would you want to hangout? I could come over to your house if you’d like?” “Would it be okay if we hung out at yours? My parents are a bit over baring sometimes and I don’t want them to hover” he questioned. I mean it’d be a first time someone coming over and I don’t know if I’m aloud to. “Uh, sure, but I have to let my parents know.” I replied. “Yeah, that’s cool. Just let me know through the window I’ll have mine open when you’re ready.” He responded before heading towards his front porch.
I got inside finally to know that no one was mad yet. I started making lunch for everyone whether or not they were home. I made some homemade BLTs for everyone on Italian wheat bread. I called out saying they were ready. I made 2 extra as well, but on normal bread that we had. If I took the “special bread” I’d get in trouble and I’m trying my hardest not to face any issues today. I just want a nice day for once. I hid the sandwiches in my room before hearing anyone come downstairs. It was my mom who came down first. I decided to muster up some guts and ask if I could have the next door neighbor come over for a little. I know if we have company my parents will behave towards me for the time being. I quietly tiptoed into the kitchen. “Hey mom, I was wondering if the next door neighbor could come over for a little bit. A little later not right now.” I asked cautiously. “She stared at me for a bit before answering. “Yeah, I guess that would be fine. Need to make sure we have a good impression on the new neighbors don’t we?” She said mischievously. “But..you need to make sure everything is spotless. We don’t want anything thinking lowly of us because you can’t seem to have anything clean.” I nodded in response and walked back to my room quickly. Well that was a low blow, but at least I can have someone over for once.
I walked over to the window and opened it. I looked towards Nickolas’ window and saw that it was open so I hollered just enough so he could hear me. He came to the window and I handed him a sandwich. “I made an extra one if you were hungry.” I offered nicely. “Oh, thanks you didn’t have to though” he replied. “I know, but I was already making them so I decided to make one for you as well. Also my mom said you can come over.” I told him. “Sweet, I’ll be over in an hour or 2 if that’s cool with you?” He asked. “Yeah, I’ll see you then.” I bid my goodbye and closed the window before eating my own sandwich and starting to clean the house for him to be able to come over.
