The noise of the hallway—the heavy static of the security radios, Vanessa’s muffled sobs against Julian’s chest, the distant shout of first responders arriving downstairs—all of it faded into a dull, distant hum. The only thing that existed was the heavy weight of Dr. Khalid’s gaze pinning her to the floor.
He didn't move to grab her. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stood there, an immaculate predator wrapped in a white lab coat, waiting for her to break.
"I asked you a question, Nurse Audrey," Khalid murmured, his voice as smooth and terrifyingly sharp as a surgical blade. "Did you find what you were looking for?"
Audrey felt the cold sweat pooling at the nape of her neck. Beneath her scrubs, the hard edges of the stolen medical chart and the velvet box felt like hot iron against her skin. If she hesitated, if her eyes flickered even for a fraction of a second, he would know. He would call the Vance security guards over, and she would be searched right here in the open corridor.
"I found the key on the floor where the intruder dropped it, Dr. Khalid," Audrey said, forcing her voice to hold the perfect balance of adrenaline-fueled exhaustion and professional deference. She didn't look down at her pocket. She looked him dead in the eye. "My only priority was getting your sister and the rest of the staff out of lockdown. I didn't have time to look for anything else."
Khalid’s eyes narrowed slightly, tracking the steady rise and fall of her chest. He was looking for the telltale signs of a liar—the twitch of a jaw, the skipping of a pulse in her throat.
For three agonizing seconds, the silence stretched between them like a tight wire.
Then, a sudden commotion broke the spell. Two paramedics came rushing through the newly opened fire doors, a gurney rattling loudly between them. "We need a clear path! VIP transport coming through!"
The sudden movement forced Khalid to take a step back to avoid the equipment. The clinical, unyielding mask slipped back over his features, hiding the darkness that had just threatened to consume her.
"Dr. Khalid!" the lead security guard called out, stepping over from where Julian and Vanessa were still huddled. "The local police are setting up a perimeter outside, but Mr. Cross wants his private detail to handle the internal sweep. We need you to verify if any narcotic supplies or sensitive patient data were compromised in the office."
Khalid didn't take his eyes off Audrey as he answered the guard. "Of course. Nurse Audrey and I were just about to do a preliminary inventory."
He turned fully back to her, offering a thin, bloodless smile that never reached his eyes. "Go down to the main floor, Audrey. Have the triage nurse check those cuts on your palms. Once you’re cleared, report back to my office. We have a lot of... missing pieces to account for."
It wasn't an invitation. It was a deadline.
Audrey nodded numbly, backing away toward the elevator bank before he could change his mind. The moment the steel elevator doors slid shut, sealing her inside the quiet metallic box, her knees gave out. She slumped against the handrail, her hand flying to her scrub pocket.
She had escaped the corridor, but she knew the clock was ticking. She had the chart. She had the toxic vials. But Dr. Khalid knew she had them—and the stalker was already waiting for her at home.
