The digital clock on Audrey's phone clicked over to 5:59 AM.
One minute. Sixty seconds left before the floor dropped out from under the VIP wing.
Inside Room 304, the air was thick with silent, lethal calculations. Dr. Khalid stood at the foot of the bed, his white coat pristine despite the chaos, his hands tucked calmly into his pockets. Opposite him, Julian Cross stood like a brick wall, his arms crossed over his chest, his silver-rimmed glasses completely obscuring his eyes. Neither man spoke, but the hatred vibrating between them was a physical weight pressing against Audrey's chest.
"The security team has arrived at the perimeter," Julian said, breaking the silence with a low, chilling baritone. "No one enters or leaves this floor until we find out who contaminated Mr. Vance's medication."
"This is my hospital, Mr. Cross," Khalid replied smoothly, his tone dripping with elite arrogance. "My staff answers to me, not to a glorified cleaner in a tailored suit."
Audrey didn't care about their power struggle. Her eyes were fixed entirely on her phone screen as the seconds melted away.
5:59:57... 5:59:58... 5:59:59...
6:00 AM.
Nothing happened.
The heart monitor continued its steady, rhythmic beep. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered with their usual dull hum. Audrey let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders collapsing slightly as she leaned against the cold wall. Was it a bluff? Was the stalker just playing a twisted psychological game to watch her squirm?
Then, the world went entirely black.
The continuous, low hum of the hospital's power grid cut out instantly. The heart monitors, the ventilators, and the blinding overhead emergency lights died all at once, plunging Room 304 into pitch-black darkness.
"What the—" the crash-cart nurse gasped, the sound of her frantic movements echoing in the dark.
"The backup generators," Khalid commanded, his voice sharp and demanding. "They should have kicked in within three seconds. Why is the secondary grid down?"
Before anyone could answer, a sudden, terrifying sound tore through the silence of the VIP wing. It wasn't inside the room. It came from the corridor outside—the heavy, mechanical clunk of the automated security fire doors slamming shut, locking them all inside.
Audrey's heart pounded against her ribs. Her trembling fingers lit up her phone screen, the bright glare throwing sharp shadows across her bloodless face.
Don't look up.
The stalker's last words flashed in her mind like fire. On pure, terrifying instinct, Audrey ignored the text. She tipped her head back, raising her phone to illuminate the ceiling above her.
Directly over the center of Room 304, a heavy metal ventilation grate had been completely removed. It lay silently on the acoustic ceiling tiles, leaving a dark, gaping square hole leading straight into the maintenance shafts. And hanging from the edge of that dark opening, a tiny, metallic object was blinking with a rapid, malicious red light.
It wasn't a sniper scope. It was a frequency jammer.
"Someone is in the ceiling," Audrey whispered, her voice cracking with absolute horror.
Before Julian or Khalid could react, a heavy, metallic thud echoed from the dark corridor outside the room, followed by the muffled, frantic scream of Vanessa Khalid.
"Julian! Khalid! Open the door! Someone is—"
Her voice was abruptly cut off by a sickening, wet thud, followed by the sound of something heavy dragging against the linoleum floor.
Julian moved with terrifying, explosive speed. He threw himself against the heavy wooden doors of Room 304, slamming his shoulder into the frame, but the electronic locks were dead, completely sealing them inside the billionaire's suite.
"The system is entirely overridden," Julian hissed in the dark, his professional facade completely shattering to reveal the ruthless killer underneath. "We're locked in."
Audrey's phone violently vibrated in her palm, the screen flashing with a new notification from the shadow:
@shadow_script0: I told you not to look up, sweetheart. Now the cage is locked, the lights are out, and I have the doctor's beautiful sister right where I want her.
The countdown didn't end, Audrey. It just moved to the dark. If you want Vanessa to survive the morning, you have exactly ten minutes to find the key to the fire doors. Hint: The doctor keeps his ugliest secrets in his desk.
Tick-tock, Nurse. The shadow is hungry.
