The darkness inside Room 304 was complete, broken only by the eerie, pale glow of Audrey’s cell phone screen. The air felt heavy, vibrating with the muffled, violent echoes of whatever was happening to Vanessa Khalid on the other side of the dead-locked security doors.
Beside her, a sudden metallic click sliced through the quiet. Audrey turned her phone light toward the sound and gasped. Julian Cross had pulled a sleek, matte-black handgun from beneath his tailored suit jacket. The silver reflection of his glasses was gone, replaced by the hollow, lethal focus of a man trained to eliminate targets.
"Khalid," Julian hissed, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register as he checked the weapon's chamber. "If my security team doesn't breach those fire doors in five minutes, I am blowing the lock off this door, and I am putting a bullet through whoever is touching Vanessa."
Dr. Khalid didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun. He stood by the crashing billionaire's bedside, his face illuminated by the upward glare of Audrey's phone. He looked entirely elite, untouchable, and dangerously calculation. "You shoot that weapon in this enclosed space, Mr. Cross, and you risk ricocheting a round directly into your employer's skull. The electronic locks are reinforced steel. Your bullets will only bounce back."
Khalid’s dark eyes snapped over to Audrey, pinning her to the wall. "Audrey. You’re looking at your phone. What does the shadow want?"
Audrey’s fingers trembled against the glass screen. She felt trapped between two monsters—the brilliant surgeon who might be a poisoner, and the lethal cleaner holding a firearm. If she showed them the text, Julian would erupt, and Khalid would lock down. But Vanessa was running out of seconds.
"The stalker... he bypassed the system from your office, Doctor," Audrey lied quickly, her voice cracking as she hid the exact wording of the message. "He said the override command to unlock the fire doors is hidden inside your private office desk. If I don't get it in nine minutes, he’s going to kill Vanessa."
Khalid’s brow furrowed, a flicker of genuine rage finally breaking through his pristine facade. "My office is at the far end of the admissions wing. The fire doors have sealed this corridor completely. You can’t even get out of this room, let alone cross the ward."
"The maintenance shaft," Audrey whispered, her amber eyes lifting slowly toward the ceiling.
She raised her phone, flooding the dark, gaping square hole above them with bright light. The frequency jammer was still blinking its malicious red eye, but the dark void behind it offered a terrifying path. The ventilation shafts connected every room on the VIP floor—including Dr. Khalid’s private office.
Julian stepped under the vent, his dead black eyes measuring the distance. "It’s too narrow for me or the doctor. Our shoulders will jam in the framework." He looked back at Audrey, his gaze locking onto her small, slender frame wrapped in nursing scrubs. "But you’ll slide right through."
Nausea rolled through Audrey's stomach. The stalker wanted her to go there. He was pulling her into the dark on purpose, dangling Vanessa's life like bait.
"I'll go," Audrey choked out, setting her clipboard on the mattress.
Julian didn't waste a second. He gripped her by the waist, his powerful arms lifting her effortlessly into the air. Audrey reached up, her fingers catching the cold, dusty metal lip of the ventilation shaft. With a desperate heave, she dragged her body upward, scraping her knees against the iron tracking as she slid completely into the suffocating darkness of the ceiling.
The air inside the shaft smelled of ancient dust and stagnant cold. She pulled out her phone, using the screen to light the narrow, metal tunnel ahead of her. She began to crawl on her hands and knees, the aluminum popping loudly beneath her weight.
Tick-tock, Nurse.
The stalker's words echoed in her ears. She crawled faster, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as the dust burned her throat. After what felt like an eternity of twisting through the dark maze, she reached a downward-facing grate. She peered through the slats.
Below her was Dr. Khalid's private office. It was completely silent, bathed in the eerie silver moonlight streaming through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows.
Audrey pushed against the plastic clips of the grate, forcing it loose. With a sharp gasp, she let herself drop, landing hard on her hands and knees on the plush Persian rug below.
She scrambled to her feet, her eyes darting to the massive, polished mahogany desk in the center of the room. This was where Khalid kept his ugliest secrets.
She threw herself into his leather chair and yanked open the top drawer. Files, gold pens, medical journals. Nothing. She pulled the second drawer. Locked.
Reaching onto the desktop, she grabbed a heavy crystal paperweight and slammed it against the drawer’s lock, the wood splintering with a loud crack. She tore the drawer open and reached inside.
There was no electronic override key.
Instead, her fingers wrapped around a small, velvet-lined box. She opened it. Inside sat three identical, unlabelled glass vials filled with a clear, synthetic fluid—the exact same vials she had seen missing from the restricted toxicology lab earlier that week. Beneath the box lay a medical chart.
Audrey opened the file. The name at the top read: DAMIAN VANCE.
But it wasn't a standard treatment plan. It was a calculated, day-by-day chemical degradation schedule, signed in sharp, flawless handwriting at the bottom of every page by Dr. Khalid. The doctor wasn't trying to heal the billionaire; he had been systematically destroying him from the inside out.
Suddenly, a low, distorted chuckle vibrated through the absolute silence of the office.
It wasn't coming from her phone.
Audrey froze, her blood turning to pure ice as she slowly looked up.
Sitting in the dark corner of the office, completely shrouded in the heavy shadows behind the door, was a tall figure wearing a dark tactical jacket. In his lap, a portable security monitor glowed with a faint blue light, displaying a live feed of Julian Cross pacing frantically inside Room 304.
The man stepped forward into the silver moonlight, revealing a sleek, terrifying ballistic mask covering his face.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" the stalker whispered, his voice a chilling, melodic purr that matched the texts perfectly. "The elite doctor is a murderer. The lawyer is a fraud. And you, my sweet Audrey, just handed me the evidence to destroy them both."
He raised a gloved hand, holding a heavy iron key between his fingers.
"Here is the key to the fire doors," the shadow murmured, taking a slow, predatory step toward her. "Come and take it from me."
