Kira got dressed to go down to town the next day, Jael was also ready to leave alongside her.
“I need to buy some things but I can’t take you to town with me.” Kira ruffled his fur as she spoke to him.
Jael whined low in his throat, he wasn’t very pleased by this outcome.
“I know, I know, but you eat a lot, I need to buy more meat for you and also get some other things. I won’t be gone very long, an hour at most.” She explained, opening the front door to let him out. “In the meantime, you can go on a walk.”
Jael walked a couple distance away and then stopped to wait for her like he was expecting them to go on another walk like the one they had yesterday.
Kira felt her heart squeeze when he c****d his head to the side in expectation. “Go on without me, I’ll see you when I come back.”
Although they were only going to be apart for an hour or two tops, Kira felt like she was sending him away to live in the woods.
Jael took a couple more steps, paused to look at her one more time, and then took off into the woods with speed that Kira had never seen displayed before.
Kira could only gape at Jael until he went out of her line of sight, only then did she look away and start for her truck. Her heart still felt heavy and she felt like crying, it made Kira frown.
She noticed that she had been getting rather emotional of late over the littlest things, could it be that her heat was coming? But she made sure to take her proper dosage of heat suppressants every three months and she already took them last month. So there should be no reason for her heat to be coming right now.
While Kira still lived with her parents, she wasn’t allowed to use heat suppressants because her mom was concerned that it would affect her fertility or some bull even though it was scientifically proven to be harmless, unless it was being suppressed over very long periods of time, like say a decade.
Kira shook the tears out of her eyes and got into her truck, still thinking about Jael. Would the werewolf remember the way back? Would he even want to come back? What if some human found him in the woods and attacked him?
There weren’t a lot of humans left in Oakwood town, but it was still a possibility and it made Kira very distracted and uncomfortable.
Maybe she should have called Mina or Helena even to keep an eye on him while she went shopping. She was sure they wouldn’t mind doing that for an hour.
Jael was already gone though, so the only thing she could do then was start her truck and drive her truck through the snow out of the woods.
When Kira got to the main town, a lot of people greeted her nicely because they all knew her from the clinic and even though she kept her distance from people, she was always polite.
Shopping was quick because she didn’t have a lot to buy, and her last stop was the butcher’s shop. Oakwood was a small town with a lot of werewolves so the butcher’s shop was doing really well.
Kira didn’t like coming here, because the butcher always leered at her. He was human so she was certain that he had no idea that she was an omega but his lingering stares always gave her the creeps.
She had been excited to find out that Oakwood had a butcher’s shop when she first came here but Liam had ruined it for her.
Kira liked to cook, so the thought of getting fresh and high-quality meat was a big deal, but right from the moment that she entered the shop, Liam had refused to take his eyes off hers.
“What’s up, Kira?” He grinned at her when she came, a black scarf tied over his brown hair to keep it out of his face. “I didn’t see you at the clinic this morning and when I asked around, I was told you were on leave.”
Kira smiled nervously at this, clutching her handbag closer. If Liam had found out so quickly even though there was nothing visibly wrong with him, it meant that he stalked her.
She brought no attention to it though, wishing that Jael was by her side. He was such a sweet and docile werewolf that she doubted that he would be of any help, but his presence would have been reassuring nonetheless.
Kira practically ran out of the butcher’s shop, dreading the fact that she would have to come there more frequently for Jael’s sake.
The drive home was quiet because she was concerned about Liam. Should she tell Helena? Or call her director about it?
After all, if he knew that she was on a leave, he certainly knew where she lived and that was even more terrifying.
It wasn’t until Kira got to the path that led to the woods that she remembered Jael, it made her drive faster, immediately forgetting about the possibly dangerous stalker that was Liam.
Kira didn’t even bother to take out the things she brought from the truck, she just parked the truck in the cleared space beside her cottage and hurried out.
“Jael! Jael! Where are you?” She called, hurrying to the front of the cottage.
The big werewolf was nowhere to be found and it made her heart drop to her stomach. Was it that he wasn’t back yet?
Just as she was about to go running into the woods to look for him, an answering howl came from the trees on the other side of the cottage.
Kira couldn’t help her big smile as he came dashing out of the line of trees. She noted that he wasn’t moving as fast as he was in the morning when he left, it was probably so that she wouldn’t be frightened.
Kira held open her arms to Jael, letting him put his paws on her even though it meant that she would fall on her back from the force.
She even let him lick her face, laughing when he jumped around her, returning to lick her face in his excitement.
“Alright, alright, that's enough.” She shooed him away, rolling over to her feet to brush the snow off her clothes.
It was snowing less and less, which meant that Spring was almost here. Soon, the rains would come and wash all of the white snow away, leaving behind sweet-smelling flowers.
Now that she had a lot of free time, maybe she could pick up gardening when it started to rain.
“Just wait for me here, Jael, I need to go get the things I bought in the truck.” She explained to him before returning to her truck.
