It had been over a month since Kira was put on leave and given a patient to look after as well.
Winter had thawed as they both adjusted to living together, Jael’s rehabilitation was coming along perfectly and Kira was certain that she had completely gotten rid of his social anxiety.
She was still yet to make any progress with getting him to shift though but much like Helena advised, she would take it one step at a time.
They had a daily routine that they both followed and Kira was just about to let Jael out on his daily run when she caught sight of the sky. It had gotten warmer recently, all of the snow evaporating in the warm spring sun.
Kira had been expecting rain any day now so she wasn’t entirely surprised when she looked up and saw that the sky was rapidly darkening. “It’s about to rain, Jael.” She hummed to the werewolf standing beside her. “It would be better if you skipped out on your run today.”
After deciding that Jael wouldn’t leave the cottage because of the incoming rain, they both went around the cottage to make sure that everywhere was properly locked because the rain looked like it would be heavy, and lightning was already flashing. After their check around the house, they both went in.
Kira looked troubled as they settled in the living room, although they could do without electricity, it would be an inconvenience if they lost power during the rainstorm.
Jael must have sensed her unease because he nudged her with his nose and looked at her expectantly.
Kira smiled absently and then patted Jael’s head, he was very attuned to her emotions, and even before she realized something was off, Jael was already checking up on her.
The possible lack of electricity wasn’t her only worry. The rain had come out of nowhere, even the weather forecast didn’t predict the rain.
She had been expecting her box of heat suppressants for days now but they kept getting delayed. It was supposed to come today without fail but now that the weather had taken a turn for the worse, she doubted it would still show up.
Kira had been on heat suppressants ever since she left the city over two years ago. Her parents never let her go on heat suppressants before that because they worried that it would affect her fertility although myths like that had been long debunked.
She had been planning on just letting her heat happen this time but now that she had a roommate, she had no choice but to suppress it again this time.
She ran out of pills recently and had been trying to order a fresh batch but in a place like Oakwood where she was probably the only Omega, she couldn’t get it easily.
Although they were sold over the counter and didn’t require a doctor to give a prescription for one, she had to place an order to a distant place that would take weeks to get here.
Kira felt a little bit off but she told herself that it was just her worries stressing her out. They had eaten breakfast not too long ago so as the first drops of rain started to fall, she got to her feet to take a short nap.
Jael immediately got up to follow her but Kira really wanted to be alone just then. “Don’t worry, Jael, keep watching your shows.” She said to him, knowing that he would probably not listen to her.
So it made her smile when he remained seated and kept up with watching the television. It showed how much progress they had made, Jael was so independent now that Kira was certain that he would shift to his human form any day now.
She had considered doing some shopping ahead of time, she was probably overdoing it considering that she had no idea what size would fit Jael but she could help snagging a couple of shirts and sweatpants so that he would at least have something to wear whenever it happened.
She flopped on her bed, feeling strangely weak. It was strange because she was literally on a vacation and she hadn’t done anything even slightly stressful for weeks.
Or could she be coming down with some type of flu? It really sucked that it was raining right now, she would have driven herself down to the clinic. While she doubted that Jael could contact whatever she had, she still wanted to be healthy.
With the rain rhythmically thudding on the roof, Kira slowly fell asleep, the furrow in her brows deepening even though she was already fast asleep.
She had snuggled under the covers because the falling rain lowered the temperature but after several minutes of sleep, the covers were kicked off. And she moved around a lot while she slept, unable to sleep peacefully.
Meanwhile, Jael was in the living room fighting the urge to check on Kira, her scent had changed slightly and it made him a bit worried. Could she be sick?
She had also been excited about the rain for weeks now but now that it was finally falling, she went to take a nap. He had planned to go along with her but when she stopped him, he backed away.
He had learned a lot about the appropriate way to act like a human and if someone expressed that they needed privacy, it was the decent thing to do to give them some. But he couldn’t help but worry nonetheless.
After a long time of being unable to concentrate on the movie playing, Jael got down to check up on Kira. He would just peek in on her to make sure she was okay then return to the living room.
He quietly made his way over to her bedroom, although it wasn’t necessary as the rain was loud enough to drown out his footsteps. He carefully turned the door handle and pushed open the door.
Jael froze up in shock when a powerful wave of Kira’s scent washed over him, it was only momentarily though because in the next moment he was hurrying over to her side.
