A normal day turned upside down
‘Tashla! Slow down! You nearly hit that car!’ The little yellow Mini Cooper was zigzagging between the cars and anyone witnessing the reckless driving would have thought that there must be a pregnant lady on the backseat whose water broke. ‘Stop worrying, Layla! I know what I am doing! Your feet hitting those imaginary brakes underneath them is only distracting me. You can also let go of the door handle - I promise you will not fly through the window!’ Layla just grunted and continued hanging on for dear life. She truly loved her sister, they were twins after all, but today of all days Tashla lived up to her hair colour - molten copper. She looked like a woman possessed as she kept on honking the horn and muttering obscure comments like ‘Did you get your driver’s license at the mini-mart!’ or ‘Go get your eyes tested! I had my indicator on and you saw me turning!’ Layla closed her eyes and tried to breathe normally. They were on their way to the bank which was closing in 15 minutes and as usual Tashla wasted time closing up their small dress shop fiddling with everything and now they are driving like bats out of hell to reach it in time to deposit their week’s worth of profits. Layla exhaled slowly as Tashla brought the little car to a screeching halt in the bank’s parking lot. ‘There! See, I told you we will be fine!’ Layla rolled her eyes and said, ‘Let us just get that money deposited so that you can buy me dinner! I swear if my hair was not naturally curly it would have been as straight as a ruler from sheer terror! Not to mention that it would have turned from pure black to pure white!’ Tashla snorted through her nose, clearly unfazed by her twin’s dramatic descriptions. The two rush across the parking lot and nearly collide with the front door in their haste. Luckily the security guard on the other side recognizes them and quickly opens the door. Clearly he is used to this kind of entrance. ‘Thanks Jerry!’ Tashla beams at him as she drags Layla behind her towards the cashier counter. There was one person waiting in the queue and another at the counter. The twins made their way to stand in the queue. ‘I am really sorry sir, but I cannot cash your cheque for you. It is not in your name.’ The cashier was trying to reason with the man standing in front of her, but it was clear from his body language that he was not impressed with her explanation. ‘I need the money NOW!’ he screamed and made the poor woman jump. ‘Get your manager here NOW!’ Tashla raised her eye brows at Layla and whispered softly ‘Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.’ Layla nodded in agreement as the poor cashier went to the back to get the bank manager. Tashla looked at the time on her iPhone and sighed, the bank was going to close in 5 minutes and Mr Angry wanted to see the bank manager. The woman in front of them huffed in annoyance and stepped out of the line muttering ‘I have no time for this!’ and walked towards the front doors. At that moment the bank manager appeared with the nervous cashier and again explained the situation. Mr Angry was not having any of it and continued with his verbal assault. ‘Maybe we should come back tomorrow, Tashla. I am starving and he is definitely not going to give up.’ whispered Layla in Tashla’s ear. Her sister was about to answer her when Mr Angry exclaimed in a loud voice, ‘You people and your stupid policies! I gave you my damn ID and driver’s license now just GIVE ME MY MONEY!’ Before the manager could utter a single word the sound of breaking glass came from the front door. Both women whipped their heads around to see what happened and the sight before them chilled them to the bone. Three armed men wearing black face masks and black sunglasses stood inside the shattered doors pointing automatic guns at them. ‘Don’t do anything stupid Mr Manager!’ said a voice behind them. Tashla and Layla slowly turned around only to see Mr Angry standing at the counter with an automatic gun pointed at the bank manager’s head and a pistol pointed at the cashier’s chest. Layla and Tashla could not believe their eyes! ‘Don’t try to be brave dude!’ shouted one of the men as he tackled Jerry the security guard to the ground while pinning his arms behind his back. Suddenly the alarms when off. ‘This bozo tripped the switch!’ shouted the man gripping Jerry tightly. ‘Wrong move!’ hissed Mr Angry and fired a shot at Jerry. The girls and cashier screamed out loud whilst the bank manager took a chance and made a dash for the door behind the counter. ‘I said don’t do anything stupid!’ shouted Mr Angry and fired another shot. The bank manager fell face down on the ground and didn’t move. The cashier fainted and Layla and Tashla grabbed hold of each other. Jerry was not moving either and Mr Angry walked passed the women. Tashla couldn’t help inhaling his masculine smell when he walked passed them and immediately shook her head to clear it. ‘What is wrong with me! He just killed two people in cold blood!’ Layla looked at her quizzically but didn’t dare to say a word. Mr Angry walked up to the broken glass whilst stepping over Jerry nonchalantly. ‘The cops will be here soon. We only have a few minutes to get it.’ He motioned to the tallest of his three accomplices, ‘It should be at the back of the safe on the second shelf from the top. Go get it and get out of here.’ The man nodded and within seconds he came back out, showed Mr Angry a thumbs up and rushed out of the door. Sirens could be heard in the background and Mr Angry swore under his breath. His other two ‘friends’ looked at him for instructions and he suddenly looked in the twins direction and smiled. Tashla and Layla inhaled sharply. They were hoping that they would be forgotten during the bank robbers’ getaway, but clearly Mr Angry had other plans. ‘Please come here.’ he said and waved them towards him with the automatic gun. Layla was the first to step hesitantly in his direction, but Tashla grabbed hold of her and held her back. ‘Why?’ Layla whimpered, her hot headed sister was going to get them both killed! ‘Because I want to take you to dinner.’ he answered sarcastically. The other two men chuckled darkly and Tashla frowned. ‘Clearly you got what you wanted so why linger?’ she asked. Mr Angry snorted and said, ‘I need you to be our hostages so that we can make a clean get away. Also it would be great if you could tell the police what I look like.’ ‘WHAT!’ exclaimed Tashla before she could help it. He smirked at her and turned his head side to side. ‘Did you get a good look? Make sure to notice the mole on my left ear, the scar below my right eye and don’t forget my dazzling smile.’ At that moment a voice could be heard from the outside. ‘We know you are in there! Come out with your hands in the air.’ Mr Angry winked at Tashla and suddenly shouted, ‘We have hostages! Don’t shoot!’ Silence followed and then the same voice said, ‘Don’t do anything stupid.’
