A knock on my door made me jolt, breaking my train of thoughts. Opening my bedroom door, I peeked out my head to see who it was. The maid in her straightened out uniform informed me about my mother awaiting my presence in the dining area.
"Your mom's here, waiting at the dining table, and she asks, I woke you up to let you know of her arrival". She said.
"Huh! My mom! Here! Really!" My eyes almost popped out of their sockets. "Alright, I'll be down in a minute. Make sure to attend to her while I'm getting ready, thank you".
My mother at my home at 7am wasn't a good sign. It definitely means she's here for serious business and wasting another minute of her time was me asking for my death earlier than normal.
Done with everything that was necessary, I made a beeline for the kitchen. There my mother was, looking extremely beautiful in a green knee-length dress, sitting at the dining table, while sipping coffee.
"Good morning Mom," I said with a grin on my lips. "You look beautiful".
"Morning Melia" she replied before taking another sip of her coffee." I always look beautiful, Melia, and you don't look bad yourself".
"To what do I owe this pleasant visit, my lady," still smiling, trying to keep composure.
"This pleasant visit involves your leaving," she said sternly.
Still sipping her coffee without sparing me a glance. I wasn't up for another debate on this topic.
"We talked about this already mom, I'm not staying back no matter what". I said through gritted teeth, definitely not pleased by her surprise visit.
"Manners, young lady, that's not how you speak to your mother. I demand some damn respect." She said while giving me a disapproving look.
"I'm sorry Mom. It's just that we've gone through this, over and over again, but you keep wanting me to change my mind, of which I never will. It's high time you took it for what it actually is."
"I know baby, I know how thick-headed you are. You're just like your father, I mean you have his features and character, just a tad bit different. He doesn't and will never run away from his problems. I didn't come here to argue with you, Melia. I came to tell you this, and I would only say it once."
Now that got my keen attention, I was wondering what bomb she had come to dump on me this time around.
"Your father and I love you dearly, and we understand the reason for your decision. We also know how difficult it must have been to come up with such an idea out of the blue. We've known you to be a critical thinker, but might I add, I don't think you thought this particular one through."
Running my fingers across my forehead and mentally facepalming myself, she continued; "we've agreed to let you take on this self-inclined journey. We will give you our full support and help you whenever you reach out to us for aid. We would do all of this and more, but, only on one condition."
At this point, I knew what was coming next was nothing close to being good. I knew my mother so well and when a 'but' comes into play, all hope is sure to be lost. I awaited the bomb, and she sure did drop a heavy one that blew me away.
"What condition, mom?" I asked curiously.
"In a year or less, you are meant to find your mate and ensure he marks you." Wiggling her brows, she continued; "else we would have no choice but to marry you off to an unmated future alpha."
My eyes almost popped out of their sockets. I was appalled. I couldn't form any words to express how pissed I was.
My mother, in all her glory, just sat there with her arms folded, waiting patiently for my outburst.
"The f**k did you just say?" I uttered angrily.
"Language young lady, you're not too old for some spanking." raising a brow at me, while she scolded me.
"How could you say something like that to me and expect me to be calm? You of all people should know that I would never accept a marriage proposal like that. Do you hate me that much, that you want to get rid of me within a year? Is this some sort of sick revenge for my leaving?" In my confused state, I just couldn't comprehend anything.
" How could you do this to me, mom, and how could Dad accept such a horrendous thing? I thought you both loved me and yet you treat me like some changeling you picked from a sewer." Tears poured down my face. "How could you both do this?"
Pulling my disheveled form into her embrace, while running her hands down my back. I cried with no care in the world while questioning my very existence. I was utterly devastated.
"We don't hate you honey. In fact, it's the very opposite. We love you so much and seeing you do this to yourself is heart-wrenching. We know how much you want to feel the love of a mate, but then, we see how you are when another wolf finds her mate, and you're left with nobody of your own. Any parent would want the best for their child, and we want the very best for you love. I promise you, Melia." Her eyes said it all, she cared about me.
Looking at her through teary-stained eyes. "The best, huh! You want the best for me and throwing me to the wolves, is what's best for your only child." Still not believing a word she said.
"Melia, don't talk that way, it only makes your father and I look bad. It's not we throwing you to the wolves love, it's we giving you another way to love and be loved and considering the fact that you're a wolf yourself and a strong one at that. I mean, it's not such a bad idea, if you look on the bright side."
"Strong wolf." I scoffed at the statement. If only she knew how weak the link was between myself and Liah my wolf, she wouldn't call me anything close to being strong. I could barely even morph to my full wolf form, all I could get out were my sharp canines, my claws and red eyes, nothing more. My dad knew about my problem but kept it a secret from my mom. He caught me once in the forest trying so hard to morph. After hours of self-torture, I passed out. I later woke up in my bed and my dad was sitting on the sofa close to the bed. His eyes held pity, it was then I knew, I was no longer a secret.
"A year and nothing more, right?" I asked while wiping the snort off my nose with a paper towel. Drying my eyes, I looked my mother deep in the eyes and waited for her response.
"Yes, love. A year and nothing more." She said, giving me a sad smile.
Rising from my crouched position, I looked at my mother dead in the eyes and smiled.
"Alright then, a year it is." Walking to the door, I turned to face my mother. "It's about time you left, I have bags to pack and a journey to prepare for."
"Sure love, I had better get going. Your father will be back from his meeting soon." She said while walking out the door.
The door firmly shut and, with its lock in place, I slid down the door, with my knees to my chest and my head buried in-between my arms. Devastated was a bleak explanation of how I felt. Anger was an understatement, but in everything, I was surely determined to find my mate at this point. I wasn't ready to go down that lane which my parents were ready to lay out for me.
Hear ye! Dear mate, it's either I go down or you go down when I eventually find you. However way it happens, I'm going to find you and claim you as mine. Even the moon goddess won't see what's coming at you, mate.
It sure indeed was going to be a journey ahead.
