Chapter 12
Ryan
I had been placed in a cell with another guy already in there. I could smell the alcohol from the other side of the room. “If he pukes, I want another cell!” I called as the officer walked away. I sat down on the thin mattress on one side of the cell, whilst the drunk stayed on the other. As far away from him as I could possibly get. I had been sitting there for God knows how long when an officer called my name. “It’s time for the interview now son, follow me. Do I need to cuff you, or will you walk on your own?” “I can walk on my own.” I replied. He nodded. “Ok, this way.” He led me down the corridor past the front desk where I had been booked in. He opened a door and guided me inside. “Take a seat Mr. Cobain. Officer Cox will be in shortly.” I took a seat on one side of the desk. I waited for a few minutes, listening for anybody approaching. I heard footsteps, stopping when they got to the door. A knock came, and the door opened without waiting for me to answer. “Mr. Cobain. My name is Officer Niall Cox, I will be conducting the interview today.” He pissed about with some recording device before continuing. “This interview is being recorded as evidence. Can you please state your name clearly for the tape “Ryan Michael Cobain” “Thank you, Ok, can you tell me what happened last night, on the evening of the 13th January?” “I went to Riley’s house and hit him a few times.” I said, nonchalantly. “You put him in the hospital Mr. Cobain.” He replied, a look of disbelief on his face. “Seriously? What a pussy.” I stated. “Can you tell me why you put Mr. Chambers in the hospital?” “He set me up. That’s all I’m gonna say.” “So, you aren’t going to give me the reason why you put him in hospital with…” He paused to look at the file in front of him “a broken nose, two cracked ribs, and various other bruising?” “No. I’m not trying to be awkward, but what’s done is done. He started it, I finished it. It won’t be happening again unless he is too stupid to try again.” I finished. Officer Cox stayed still, glaring at me. I didn’t care. I wasn’t going to give him any more than what he needed. He didn’t need to know the full reason, just that he started the whole thing. After sitting in silence, Officer Cox stopped trying to intimidate me, and led me back to my cell. It was still dark outside. I had no idea of the time; you lose all concept of time in jail. Cox led me back to the cell where the drunk was now awake. “Fuck.” I muttered. “He will be released soon, we just needed him to sober up.” Cox reassured me. “What time is it?” I asked. “4:45” “I have a class starting at 9, will I be out by then?” “Depends if you make bail. It didn’t help you not telling me anything.” He said smugly. “Yeah well, you didn’t need to know.” I shrugged. He opened the cell doors and I walked back in.
It was sometime later when the cell opened; and Cox walked in. “Ok, you’ve posted bail.” “Who posted it?” I asked, confused. I didn’t know anyone with the money to be able to put up bail money. “Come and find out.” He said. I walked out to find Oliver standing around waiting for me. “Hey man, you look like s**t. Let’s get home. I called campus and told them you had a family emergency and wouldn’t be in.” “Thanks man, I appreciate it. Did you put up the bail money?” “Yep. It’s fine, I had it in my account. Just don’t bail on me so I lose it.” “I won’t, thanks man.”
I stayed at home for the rest of the day. I was still trying to get in touch with Julia when somebody knocked on the door. I opened it and found Emmy there. “Emmy, where’s Julia? Is she with you?” I asked. “I’m on my own, can I come in?” she asked. “Yeah, come in.” I said, holding the door open for her to walk through. “Ok, I’m really sorry for what happened. If it’s any consolation, I really believe you didn’t do it. I was looking at the pictures again and it looked like you were surprised. I need to tell you something though, something you’re gonna be really pissed about. Julia is gone.” “Gone! What do you mean she’s f*****g gone? Gone where???” I exploded, jumping up off of the sofa in a fit of rage. “She transferred. She couldn’t see you every day without it breaking her heart, so she transferred over Christmas. I’m so sorry Ryan.” “Where has she gone? Please tell me, I need her” I begged. “She asked me not to tell you Ryan, I wish I could, but she wouldn’t tell me unless I promised to keep it to myself.” Oliver walked out of his room to find out what all the commotion was about. “Ryan?” he asked, slowly walking to me. “What happened man?” “Julia transferred schools.” Emmy explained. “s**t. I’m sorry man. After everything that went down last night, I really hoped you would be able to convince her.” Emmy looked between us, confused at what Oliver said. “What happened last night?” she asked, curiosity getting the better of her. “We found out that it was definitely Riley that set him up, so I found out when he was home and Ryan went and beat the s**t out of him. He was arrested a few hours later.” “f**k, seriously?” she asked. She walked over to me. “I’m so sorry Ryan. I will tell Julia what you’ve said and hopefully she will change her mind and transfer back. I’m really annoyed with her myself for leaving.” With that, she walked back towards the door and let herself out. I sank back down on to the sofa, defeated. and for the first time since I was 5, I cried. Oliver went into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of Jack that we had in case of emergencies. He got 2 shot glasses off the shelf and bought it all in. “Come on, drink up man. It will help.” I looked up at the clock, it was 9:40 in the morning. I wanted to feel numb though, so I didn’t care. I cracked open the bottle, swigging it out of the bottle before pouring some into the glasses.
