Chapter 11
Ryan
I hadn’t been able to concentrate all day. My shift started 40 minutes after my last class. I couldn’t be late, so I couldn’t stop by Julia’s first. I walked in to see Grey flirting whilst serving a couple of girls. “Knock it off dude. They’re not interested.” I laughed. “Hey Ryan! What’s up man?” He came off and pulled me in for a bear hug. “Help me!” He begged under his breath. I laughed out loud as he turned round to give his full attention to the girls at the counter. “Nah man, sorry, I’m out the game for a while. He stopped, turning back to me with a quizzical look on his face. “What?” he asked, slowly. “Don’t worry, get back to your girls.” I answered, nodding in their direction. “I’m gonna go and check in with the boss.” I said, leaving him alone. “Alright man, we’ll talk later though, yeah?” I nodded and continued in the direction of the office out back.
I reached the office door and knocked lightly. “Come in” called the male voice, belonging to my boss, Carl. I walked in. “Afternoon boss.” I said. “Hey Ryan, good to see you. You have a good Christmas?” He asked. “Not really.” I replied. He saw the expression on my face and decided not to pry. “Ok, we’ve had to have a change of shifts round here. Brooke quit over the holiday because she transferred schools. I’m giving you a trial for the assistant managers position. That something you would be happy with?” he asked. “Yeah, it would. Thanks boss.” I turned to leave when he called me back. “By the way, a guy kept coming in and asking for you. Usually I wouldn’t say anything, but he had been in a few times over the break. I told him the first few times you were home for the holidays; but he kept coming back. I told him you were due back today. I’m assuming he will come back in.” “Did he leave a name?” I asked, wondering who the hell it was. The only guy I was friends with was Oliver, and he knew when I was back. f**k, he was going home himself. I grabbed my apron and headed back to the front. The café was full of students needing their afternoon fix, just to get them through the first day back.
Time had flown quickly, and before I knew it, it was the end of my shift and closing time. I waited for the last customer to leave before I went to lock the door. Just as I lifted my hand, the door sprang open. It was Oliver. “Hey man, we’re just closing.” “I know, that’s why I left it till now, you need to see this.” He said, holding his phone. It was a text message from an unknown number. “Tell that prick Ryan that we are now even.” It wasn’t signed by anyone. “Who the f**k sent this?” I asked. “I don’t know. I don’t have their number. It occurred to me then that the mystery guy asking for me could be the same one who sent this message. I locked the door after Oliver came in. “I’ll be back in a minute. I need to see Carl.” Oliver nodded and I walked round the back. I knocked on the same door as earlier, waiting impatiently for him to call. I knocked again, before opening the door. Carl was sitting in his chair, in front of the laptop, with his d**k in his hand. “f**k!” He yelled, letting go of his d**k, and slamming the laptop lid closed at the same time. I couldn’t help it, I f*****g laughed.
“I thought you left for the night.” He said, unashamedly. “Nope, I needed to ask you something. The guy who came in, what did he look like?” I asked. “He was tall, skinny, had brown hair. Didn’t see his eyes because he was wearing glasses. “Was he alone?” I asked, a picture forming in my mind of who he was talking about. “Yeah, he came in with a girl a few times.” He described the same girl wo came on to me the night before I left, the b***h who caused Julia to dump me. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and found the picture of her trying to kiss me. “This her?” I asked. He nodded. “f**k!” This was the proof I needed to know that I had been right all along- that it was Riley who set the whole thing up. That f*****g cunt had been the cause of Julia dumping me. I was f*****g furious- with him and myself for f*****g falling for it. I told Carl I had to go and bolted out the door. He could chase me, but I didn’t think he would because he hadn’t yet put his d**k away. I told Oliver what I had found, that I finally had proof it was Riley. “Are we going to go and pay him a visit?” he asked. “what do you think this is? The f*****g Godfather?” He smirked. “I f*****g hope so, I love that movie. Can I be Don?” he asked, f*****g bouncing round like a f*****g child. “f*****g calm down, we’ll go back home first and make a plan, but I will be f*****g getting that bastard back for what he’s done.” Oliver nodded and we headed out. We arrived back home ten minutes later. I noticed the half-drunk bottle of beer on the table, he must have left as soon as he got the message. He walked straight to the fridge and grabbed a couple of beers. “Ok, so what’s the plan?” he asked, sitting down on the sofa. “I’m not sure yet, I will have to find out his routine, I know where he lives but I don’t know anything else really.” I admitted. “What about the girl?” I don’t know her either. I said. “Ok, I have someone who knows Riley. I think he is on the same team as one of his frat brothers. I will text him now and see what he says.” I nodded my appreciation as he got his phone out of his jeans pocket. He picked up the half empty beer that had been left on the table and necked the rest of it. We sat in silence for a few minutes until his phone beeped. “He says he is mates with Jordan, another lad on the team who is in the same frat house. He wants to know why I’m asking. Can I tell him?” “Will he tell Jordan?” “Jordan hates Riley anyway, by the sound of it, they all do.” “Fine then, tell him.” I permitted. We waited for the next message to come through. “Damn man, that’s f****d. Riley is a little chump. I will ask Jordan when Riley will next be home and I will tell you. I’ll also make sure he doesn’t tell Riley.” “Great, tell him I appreciate it.” I said. We talked for a little while, plotting on what we were going to do. The more Oliver drank, the more animated he got and thought he was actually Don Corleone. He even mentioned a f*****g horse head. “I’m gonna find out when he is at home and I’m gonna go and see him. He deserves to have his ass handed to him for what he’s done, so that’s what I’m gonna do.” I stated. “I got your back man” he added. I nodded my thanks, just as Oliver’s phone beeped again. “He’s home now.” Oliver smirked. “Then guess what we’re doing tonight then?” I finished off my beer and grabbed my shoes. Oliver said he would text back to tell him to be ready for us, and that we were on our way. He texted back a minute later saying Jordan will wait for us at the door to let us in then take us to Riley’s room.
We left home and headed towards the frat house where the cunt lived. It was a Monday so there were no parties. I knocked on the door and some guy answered. “Hey, are you Jordan?” I asked, “yep, I take it you’re Ryan?” he asked. I nodded. “He’s in his room. Follow me.” He moved to let Oliver and I passed. I walked up the stairs and called his name. f**k the element of surprise. I wanted that fucker to know I was coming for him. He came out of his room, so did a few other guys. “What can I do for you, Ryan?” He asked, as smug as s**t. He must have thought I wouldn’t do anything because he had people around him. f*****g i***t. I walked over, clenching my fist, and swinging. My fist connected with his jaw as he cried out. Oliver stood next to me, warning the others not to get involved. “Don’t f*****g touch him. That little fucker deserves to get his ass beaten for what he’s done.” Jordan told the other guys. The guys nodded and headed back into their rooms. Riley cried out, begging them to help him. “No, you went too far this time asshole.” Jordan claimed before leaving to go back to his room. As the last door closed, leaving Riley to his fate. I beat his ass down for another few minutes. Leaving the little f**k unconscious. One of the guys who had left came back out, deciding he did have the balls to stand up to us. “That’s enough. You made your point.” He said, pulling me away from him. I looked down at his weak pathetic body. Deciding he had had enough, I nodded to the other guy and left. Oliver and I walked back home; I was shaking with adrenaline. It didn’t bring Julia back to me, but at least it was a start. I could tell her what he had done, and hopefully she would realize I hadn’t done anything wrong. I just needed to find her now so I could tell her this.
I was asleep when I heard a banging at the door. I thought I was dreaming until I heard Oliver yell. I jumped out of bed, not stopping to put any pants on, and ran out of my bedroom. Police. The little fucker had reported me. I let out a half laugh. “Ryan Cobain?” I nodded. “My name is officer Hill; you are under arrest for the assault on Riley Chambers on the 13th January. You have the right to remain silent, anything you do say will be taken into account and will be given in evidence for the state’s attorney. If you can not afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you. Do you understand?” I nodded. “Can I at least get dressed before you cuff me?” I asked. “Yes, I will come with you, just grab anything.” I couldn’t believe that f**k had had me arrested.
