Why?

1129 Words
Kayla POV I awoke with a severe headache. It took a while for my eyes to open. I had no idea where I was or how I got there. I tried to summon my wolf, Thea, but I couldn't feel her. I became concerned and jumped to my feet, trying to figure out what was going on. The smell of blood was overpowering, making me sick. I took a few steps with my arm under my nose, and that's when I noticed the scenery around me. Natalie's body was lying on the floor in a pool of blood. In shock, I covered my mouth with my hands. Tears streamed down my cheeks. I knelt down, grabbed Natalie's body, and sobbed uncontrollably. I couldn´t understand what was happening. Why? I wipe my tears away and kiss the forehead of the woman who raised me as a daughter as I bid her farewell. I know it's dangerous to stay here, and I need to figure out what happened. I stood up and exited the room. The image in the living room is one of total destruction. There are some warrior bodies whose insignia I don't recognize. This is strange because I am familiar with all of the Kingdom's insignia. I walked out the door, or rather, through the space where there used to be a door. Countless bodies and organs were scattered around. I couldn´t help but vomit when I sensed the smell blood and decomposition. I was at a loss. I was at a loss for what to think or do... My mind links weren't working, my wolf wasn´t with me, and something felt off. It was most likely the pain I was experiencing. As I leaned against the house's wall, I realized I needed to get home as soon as possible and ask for assistance. The sound of footsteps alerted me, and before I ran away, I noticed a girl who appeared to be my age. She was dressed in a blood-stained light blue gown. Her bare feet were filthy, and her face was smeared with dirt and blood, but also with traces of previously flown and dried tears. Her arms are holding some fruit. "You finally awoke. Hello, my name is Alice. Yours?" I feel drained by her, and something tells me I can trust her even though I don't know her. It's as if we're connected in some way. "Kayla" I have a lot of questions, but I´m in some kind of shock. I can´t manage to speak. "Brought us some fruit." She says this as she sets down the fruit and walks into the house. My feet are firmly planted on the ground. Words fail to emerge. What the hell is happening? "Will you assist me in finding something to place the fruit on? We've got to get out of here." Her voice jolts me back to reality. "Who are you?" I finally got up the courage to speak. "Kayla now is not the time. We have to get out of here. I, too, am in need of answers, but I am frail. My wolf is probably hiding somewhere, and I need to recharge for her to return. Maybe she'll show up when I'm stronger. I selected some fruit." She told me as she looked at me intently. "Let's take it with us and eat it somewhere safe. Unless you have answers to all of these questions..." She raised her brown eyes and observed with curiosity. I averted my gaze as I entered the house, hoping to find something useful to us in the midst of the devastation. "Here! I discovered a backpack." I informed her while picking up the object I had just discovered. Alice stuffed the fruit into the backpack. She arranged some knives she had gathered from the kitchen, a pan, and an unopened bottle of vodka that had surprisingly withstood the test of war. To my surprise, when I turned on the faucet, nothing came out. "Do you think I'd be this dirty if there was water?" Alice says with a puzzled expression. "We have to get going!" She says this while staring at me. "I discovered a river nearby; we can go there," Alice said. "Is that a river?" Finally, the words came out of my mouth as a scream. "I'm ready to go home! Let's meet at my house. I'll bring you along!" Kayla, I told her with determination in my voice. "Where do you live?" Alice inquired, her face solemn. Her lips trembled slightly, but she quickly pulled them back together. "This kingdom's queen is me. King Leon is my mate. He can assist us!" I said this as I took the backpack from Alice's grasp, closed it, strapped it to my back, and began walking. I realized Alice wasn't following me. "Are you coming?" I asked, turning to face her. When I asked, Alice took a few steps forward and hugged me. "Your kingdom has been conquered and destroyed. Kayla, I apologize!" Looking down, she murmured in a sweet and pained voice. "That is not right! Leon is still alive! I'm not affected by the loss." That's when I realized I was no longer feeling anything. I didn´t sense a connection between us. Being without my wolf could explain it, I reasoned. Leon was fine. Alice was confused, that must be it. Leon is still alive and well. He's either at home waiting for me or searching for me. I'm aware of it! I tried to think positively, but my heart told me otherwise. "Kayla, I saw you when I woke up... I had no idea who you were. I simply wanted to protect myself, so I fled. I ran until I reached the edge of your kingdom. I came across one of the king's wounded warriors on the ground and asked him what had happened, and that's when he told me... They were invaded, and the kingdom was taken. I didn't know the area, and a part of me wanted to return to find answers, but before I could help your warrior... he died." "Nooooooooooooooo... It's not possible! It has to be seen to be believed." My legs began to run at the limit of my strength, and when I arrived at the hill, I looked down. Smoke, fire, and a hoisted flag bearing the same insignia as the dead warriors in Natalie's house. So it is true... Leon... my dear mate... My knees landed on the floor, then my hands. I gripped the land that once belonged to me, and it became wet with the tears that fell from my eyes. I look at the sky and all I can scream is "Why? Why???"
