My mind roared, 'Oh my gosh! In just a few hours, not only have I uncovered the conspiracy between my husband and Amanda, but I have also crossed paths with a brutal mafia boss. What should I do now?'
"Oh!" In the quiet night, a sudden groan from Nahum echoed from downstairs.
I quickly hid the jade token and stealthily left my bedroom.
Downstairs in the dining room, Nahum, dressed to the nines, was pinned against the wall by Amanda.
Amanda was pressed up against his chest. Her eyes were sultry as she ventured one hand into his trousers to tease him provocatively.
Nahum seemed pleased with Amanda's touches, and he struggled to keep his desires in check.
Perhaps Amanda's skills were too much for him; it wasn't long before Nahum couldn't take it anymore. He roughly bent Amanda over the dining table and yanked down her underwear.
"Little slut, I've got to hand it to your techniques," Nahum whispered into her ear as he pressed against her back. "I wanna f**k you until the end of the world."
Amanda was initially startled by his actions, but she then turned around. Her fingers trailed across Nahum's chest as he seductively asked, "You sure just right here? Aren't you afraid she'll find out?"
Nahum's frantic movements halted as he heard that.
He scowled, glared at Amanda for a few seconds, and tossed her aside impatiently. He complained, "What a damn bummer."
"Hey, cheer up," Amanda said as she stood up to straighten Nahum's clothes and zip up his trousers. "She'll be down for dinner soon. We've waited seven years, and one more day won't hurt."
'One day?' I was shocked by her words.
From my vantage point on the second floor, I watched their actions and words unfold.
In the morning, hadn't Amanda said on the phone that if I kept taking the poison I could last another month? Why was it suddenly the last day?
"If she hadn't called me back today, I would have succeeded," Nahum said, his eyes gleaming with dangerous lights.
"Did he notice anything unusual?" Amanda asked cautiously.
"No, but he still refuses to change the will." Nahum squinted out the window and continued, "That old fool is leaving 80% of his asset to Dinah."
He turned his gaze back to Amanda and scoffed, "And you, his adopted daughter, get just 20%. But..."
My legs went weak with shock when his words reached my ears.
I finally understood why they wanted to poison me—all because of the inheritance my uncle left me.
The two villains were scheming to strip everything from him. My uncle, who never had children and was the big boss of the entertainment empire, was now also in danger, not just me.
'I can't just sit around and wait for disaster. I have to call my uncle immediately,' I warned myself inwardly.
With that thought, I rushed back to my room to look for my phone.
I remembered clearly leaving it on the nightstand, but it was nowhere to be found—not on the bed, not in the drawers.
'Where could my phone be?'
"Honey, are you looking for this?" Just as I was turning the room upside down, Nahum's voice came from behind me.
His voice was chilling and devoid of any warmth it once had.
I paused for a couple of seconds and turned around, with anxiety gripping my heart. There in Nahum's hand was my phone.
"Oh, I was wondering where it had gone. Honey, you picked it up for me?" To keep him from suspecting, I forced a smile and stepped forward, saying, "I was just so bored and wanted to use it to pass the time."
As I reached out to take it, Nahum subtly lifted his hand and moved the phone just out of my reach.
"Pass the time?" Nahum scoffed, seeing right through me. "You mean to call William, don't you?"
His words made my heart skip a beat, but I quickly regained my composure.
"Not at all. My uncle is so busy, and I wouldn't bother him without special things," I continued my charade.
But how could my acting fool the suspicious and perceptive Nahum?
His demeanor shifted from the indulgent one he used to show me to a more menacing one. He grasped my neck and caressed my cheek with his fingertips.
"Honey, you know you can't lie. Whenever you do, you blink to hide your nervousness," he said coldly.
"I'm not lying." I hurriedly shook my head and pleaded, "Honey, please let go. You're hurting me."
"Hmph!" Nahum didn't loosen his grip. Instead, he tightened it and said, "Enough, Dinah. I saw you blink three times just now because you were nervous. So, you were eavesdropping on our conversation, weren't you?"
"I..."
I was totally flustered!
Staring at Nahum as he began to reveal the truth, I knew lying was futile.
"Fine, since you already know, there's no point in hiding it anymore." Nahum didn't give me a chance to speak. He roughly pushed me away and brushed off his hand that had touched me with a disgusted look.
He then said, "Pretending for seven years was exhausting. Good thing I don't have to fake it anymore."
He laid his cards on the table, exposing his ruthless ambition right in front of me.
With a glare, he continued, "That's right. I want William dead, and not just him—you too."
I fell to the floor and covered my belly which had hit the table corner. I looked up at him with disbelief and asked, "Honey, why are you doing this? Is it all just for my uncle's wealth?"
"What else do you think?" he retorted with gritted teeth. "William is a big shot in Solhaven, but he planned to leave most of his fortune to you. You're my wife, and I know you well. Even if you inherited his assets, you'd just pour it into charities, and then what? It wouldn't benefit me at all."
His eyes filled with resentment as he added, "Only with William and you gone can I naturally inherit 100% of his assets. Only then can I rise to replace him and become the top dog."
"So that's why you approached me in the first place?" Hearing him confess these things, I felt my heart shatter into pieces.
Even if being forewarned while eavesdropping softened the blow, it was nothing compared to the damage of hearing it directly from him.
"Of course. Do you even think I really love you? Facing a dull housewife like you every day, seriously, I've had enough."
Nahum gave me a disdainful look and added, "With your plain face and your conservative clothes, you really make me sick."
