Chapter 4: Dreams Deferred

1221 Words
Maia sat in her small room, staring blankly out the window. The weight of the morning’s events pressed down on her, leaving her feeling suffocated. The word “marriage” seemed to echo in her mind, surreal and inescapable. I’m really getting married, she thought, her hands twisting in her lap. It was only a day ago that she’d been at Maico’s birthday party, laughing with friends and feeling like any other girl her age. Now, she was engaged to Jacob—her brother’s best friend, her… what, exactly? This wasn’t supposed to be my life, she thought. Not yet. Maia had always dreamed of going to college, of leaving the village and exploring the world beyond. She had hoped to build a life that was hers alone, free of limitations, a life her mother had encouraged her to reach for. Even though money was tight, she’d been determined to find a way. She would work, study hard, and maybe one day help her family with the success she hoped to achieve. She had imagined a life filled with possibilities—yet now it seemed like those dreams were slipping through her fingers. And then there was Jacob. She’d always thought of him as an older brother, though she’d been keenly aware of how different he was from her actual brother. Where Maico was loud and brash, Jacob was calm and quiet. He’d always been there in the background, strong and dependable, his friendship with Maico making him a constant presence in her life. But even though she knew he was handsome, with his tall frame and serious blue eyes, she had never considered him as a man she might be with. She’d never thought she’d be the type of girl Jacob might even notice. After all, she’d seen some of his ex-girlfriends—beautiful, confident women who seemed like they belonged in a different world. Women she felt she couldn’t possibly measure up to. “Why would he even want this?” she whispered to herself, hugging her knees. The question lingered. Part of her couldn’t shake the memory of Jacob’s expression that morning, the way he’d said he would marry her with such seriousness. She’d expected anger or reluctance from him, but instead, he had shown none of that. It was as if he’d already made up his mind to take on this responsibility.Responsibility. The word stung. Was that how he saw this? Did he only want to marry her because of some sense of duty? The thought left a bitter taste in her mouth. She had always wanted her marriage to be something chosen, something full of love. And yet, here she was, only a month shy of eighteen, about to be bound to a man who hadn’t even hinted at love. And why can’t I remember that night? she thought, frustrated. That single missing piece gnawed at her, leaving her with an uncomfortable feeling of helplessness. She couldn’t recall a single detail aftershe’d taken that drink Jacob had given her at the party. Everything after that was a haze. For all she knew, maybe she had done something embarrassing, maybe she— A soft knock on her door interrupted her thoughts. “Maia?” It was Jacob’s voice, muffled but unmistakable. She hesitated, her heart speeding up in spite of herself. After a pause, she went to open the door. He stood there, his expression serious but gentle, his eyes searching her face for any sign of what she was feeling.“Can I come in?” he asked softly. She nodded, stepping aside. As he entered, she could feel her pulse quicken, and she hated that her own body seemed to betray her. She wasn’t supposed to feel anything for him, yet here she was, growing nervous under his steady gaze. They sat on opposite sides of the room, the silence between them almost as loud as words.“I’m sorry, Maia,” he began, his voice rougher than usual. “I know this isn’t what you wanted. None of it is. I know you have dreams, and that you probably never thought I’d be part of them.” She looked down, her throat tightening at the hint of understanding in his voice. “I just…I don’t understand, Jacob. Why do you want to do this? You could have said no.” Jacob took a breath, looking away as if collecting his thoughts. “I can’t let you face the consequences of what happened alone,” he said finally. “I know it’s not ideal, but I meant what I said—I’ll take responsibility.”“That’s what bothers me,” she murmured, almost to herself. “You’re talking like you’re…obliged.” He met her gaze, his expression softening. “I may not have told you before, Maia, but…you’ve always been important to me. Maybe I didn’t say it outright, but that doesn’t make it any less true.” The words sent a warm thrill through her, though she tried to suppress it. She felt embarrassed, still uncertain about how much to believe. “I don’t know, Jacob,” she said quietly. “I can’t help feeling like…I don’t even know who you really are. And I don’t want you to give up your life for me.”Jacob shook his head. “My life isn’t changing, Maia. It’s only becoming something I’m ready for. And as for you…I know you have big dreams, and I don’t want to stand in the way of those.” She looked at him, surprised. “You mean that?” He nodded. “If you want to keep studying, to go to college someday, then we’ll find a way. I won’t let marriage to me keep you from doing what you want to do. That’s a promise.”The sincerity in his voice made her heart ache in a way she hadn’t expected. For the first time, she saw him as something other than just Maico’s friend, or even as a husband-to-be. He was…Jacob, someone who had always been there, quietly watching out for her. And even now, in this bewildering situation, he was trying to protect her future. After a long pause, Maia spoke, her voice soft. “Thank you,” she said, feeling the weight of those words more deeply than she could express. “I just…this is all so much to take in.”He gave a small nod. “I understand. Take all the time you need.” He looked as if he wanted to say more, but he held back, rising to his feet. Before he left, he hesitated by the door. “I know this isn’t what you expected. It’s not exactly what I’d imagined either. But… I’ll do my best to make you happy, Maia. I promise.” She nodded, and he left, closing the door gently behind him.Alone again, Maia felt a strange mixture of sadness and something else—a glimmer of hope, perhaps. She still didn’t fully understand what had happened or why Jacob had chosen to marry her so readily. But his words lingered, giving her a small sense of comfort she hadn’t expected. She didn’t know what her future held, but she was starting to believe that maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be as bleak as she’d feared.
