The sun was just setting over the village as Maico’s birthday celebration reached its peak. Music and laughter filled the air, and Jacob found himself nursing a drink near the edges of the gathering. He kept his eyes on Maia, though he tried to be discreet. Her laugh echoed in his ears, and the way she seemed to glow with happiness had his heart in knots. Marry Maia off to pay a debt? His mind raced, and a cold fury simmered beneath his shock. He knew Maia’s family struggled, but to give her away like this? At barely eighteen?
