Chapter 2: The Discovery

364 Words
The first thing Maia noticed was the pain in her limbs and the strange ache in her body. She blinked awake slowly, her vision still blurred, feeling as though she was emerging from a thick fog. A soft ray of morning light peeked through the window, casting a warm glow over the room that was… unfamiliar. Confused, she shifted beneath the blankets, trying to make sense of where she was. She caught a glimpse of her surroundings and froze, heart pounding. She wasn’t alone. Jacob lay beside her, still and breathing softly, his features relaxed in sleep. Her mind raced, a thousand questions swirling in her head. Her body felt strange, as if something significant had happened, but she couldn’t quite remember what. “Jacob?” she whispered, her voice hoarse. He stirred at the sound of her voice, his eyes flickering open to meet hers. For a moment, neither of them spoke, both trapped in the weight of what their proximity implied. But before Jacob could answer, the sound of hurried footsteps reached them, followed by a gasp at the doorway. It was her mother, hand over her mouth in shock. Behind her stood Maico, who looked between his sister and his best friend with a dawning realization that made his face harden. “What…what is this?” her mother stammered, her voice breaking. Maia scrambled to sit up, clutching the blankets tightly around her. “Mom, I…I don’t know what happened,” she said, her voice wavering. “I don’t remember…” But her mother’s face was already clouding with anger and disappointment, and Maico’s fists were clenched, his jaw tight. He looked at Jacob with a fury that Maia had never seen before. “Jacob,” Maico said through gritted teeth, barely holding back his rage. “I trusted you. How could you?” Jacob’s expression was pained as he sat up slowly. He could see the hurt in Maico’s eyes, the betrayal written all over his face, and it cut deep. But he held steady, knowing he’d done this for Maia—even if she didn’t know it yet. “Maico, I…” he began, struggling to find the words.
