THE MEROMYLLS OF LAKE LURDLake Lurd sparkled in the cerulean light of day's end as the sun descended behind a bank of Sugar Maples. Flecks of dying light, looking like slivers of escaping moonlight, bounced upon the lake's surface and then spilled across a group of growing amaranths where butterflies rested, their iridescent wings opening and closing in the cooling autumn air. A vagrant wind moved across the lake, gently rocking the giant water lilies and shaking awake the lithe creatures hidden inside the leaves and flowers. Disturbed squeaks filled the air as a group of miniature human forms dove into the water and disappeared. Laughter traveled on the wind, and the quaint couplings that followed caused a further rippling of water along Lake Lurd's banks, gentle at first but then with g
